Electron microscopic examination of a negatively stained suspension of Zinga virus showed particles 90-100 nm in diameter, enveloped with spikes 12-20 nm in length and 5 nm in diameter. Further identification of the virus by immune electron microscopy showed the reactivity of human Rift Valley fever virus-positive serum with Zinga virus. Results of this study are in agreement with earlier reports that Zinga virus is a strain of Rift Valley fever virus.
BACKGROUND: As a complication of chemotherapy/corticosteroids for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and other malignancies during childhood, avascular osteonecrosis appears in up to 30 % of the patients. Weight-bearing joints are involved in over 90 % of the cases. Total joint replacement is often necessary to restore function. Yet, endoprostheses in young patients again bare the risk of later complications and the need for several revision surgeries. In this report, joint preserving surgical strategies will be discussed. PATIENTS: Three hips and eleven knee joints in 8 patients (4 male, 4 female) were operated on for symptomatic ON and/or osteochondral defects (OCD) after chemotherapy. Four of the patients underwent surgery in more than one joint. The average age at the time of surgery was 18 years (range 14 - 26). The procedures included retrograde drilling (core decompression), bone grafting, implantation of collagen sponges with autologous bone marrow aspirate, osteochondral autograft transplantation and transplantation of periosteal flaps. Two hip joints underwent total joint replacement. Average follow up was 25 months. RESULTS: After an average follow up of 2 years, all patients were satisfied with the functional results after the last follow up with pain free walking for a minimum of 60 minutes. No night pain was reported. One patient complained about intermittent periods of dysaesthesia around the bone harvest area at the iliac crest. CONCLUSIONS: The aim of surgery for ON and OCD after chemotherapy should be the reduction of pain and preservation of the joint to bypass the risks of joint replacement in young patients, although total joint replacement may become indicated in endstage degeneration of the involved joint.
We have studied the serological relationship among the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), and three simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIV). SIVagm was isolated from African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops), and compared with the previously described isolates of SIVmac from a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) and SIVsm from a sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys). With respect to the glycoproteins, the simian viruses represent a subgroup apparently different from HIV. To classify HIV and SIV isolates further, we compared tryptic peptide maps of the core polypeptides p 18 and p 24 of HIV-2, three HIV-1 and five SIV isolates. Each peptide map was distinguishable, and differences are most prominent between the HIV-1 group and the SIVmac/SIVsm group. HIV-2 is very similar to SIVmac and SIVsm. The three SIVagm isolates form a more heterogeneous group. The p24s of all SIVagms are more similar to the p24s of HIV-1, but with respect to p 18, one isolate is similar to HIV-1, while the two others are more related to SIVmac, SIVsm, and HIV-2.
We describe the isolation and characterization of a new Lassa virus strain imported into Germany by a traveler who had visited Ghana, Côte D'Ivoire, and Burkina Faso. This strain, designated "AV," originated from a region in West Africa where Lassa fever has not been reported. Viral S RNA isolated from the patient's serum was amplified and sequenced. A long-range reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction allowed amplification of the full-length (3.4 kb) S RNA. The coding sequences of strain AV differed from those of all known Lassa prototype strains (Josiah, Nigeria, and LP) by approximately 20%, mainly at third codon positions. Phylogenetically, strain AV appears to be most closely related to strain Josiah from Sierra Leone. Lassa viruses comprise a group of genetically highly diverse strains, which has implications for vaccine development. The new method for full-length S RNA amplification may facilitate identification and molecular analysis of new arenaviruses or arenavirus strains.
