'Self-correcting' spherical bioelectrode.

Most of the widely used biopotential macroscopic and microscopic bioelectrodes do not enable proper measurements while in contact with 'problematic' tissues, such as myocardial and other muscular tissues, cortical and intracavital tissues. A quantitative spherical electrode was designed as an example in the family of bioelectrodes enabling application in moving or vibrating media. The electrode developed is insensitive to its contact area. Decreasing the contact area to 40% causes 25% increase in measured resistance only. The electrode shows excellent performance in alternating current conditions combined with well-defined direct current characteristics.

[An acute psychotic episode following adrenalectomy in cushing's syndrome].

A marked cortisone psychosis with initial depressive symptoms developed following left adrenalectomy in a 41 year-old female patient suffering from Cushing's syndrome due to bilateral adrenal hyperplasia. On deterioration of the clinical picture with the development of delusional ideas, verbal hallucinosis with imperative voices was observed. The administration of neuroleptic drugs favourably influenced the psychosis, which disappeared with a final depressive stage, thereby enabling removal of the second hyperplastic adrenal gland. The physical signs showed a good remission, except for the severe myopathy and osteoporosis; the pathologically-altered serum potassium level and the erythrocyte potassium content returned to normal.

Deuterium order parameters in relation to thermodynamic properties of a phospholiped bilayer. A statistical mechanical interpretation.

The physical properties of bilayers of dipalmitoyl-3-sn-phosphatidylcholine are analyzed in terms of a statistical model proposed by Marcelja (S. Marcelja (1974), Biochim. Biophys. Acta 367, 165). The model is used to calculate the segmental order parameters of the hydrocarbon chains, the transition temperature of the crystalline leads to liquid crystalline phase transition, the entropy change of the transition, the bilayer thickness, and the linear thermal expansion coefficient. The theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with experimental results obtained by deuterium magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. The model yields the probabilities of trans and gauche conformations and also those of more specific conformational defects like kinks or jogs.

[Unusual course of a malignant exophthalmos].

In spite of careful choice of therapy for the individual case, including all the methods used hitherto, such as total thyroidectomy, hypophyseal castration by surgery or irradiation, the prognosis of malignant exophthalmos is very unfavorable. The unusual intense and persistent growth of fatty and connective tissue in the orbit was striking in our patient. The forward thrusting tissue could only be brought to a standstill by X-irradiation of both orbits. The hyperthyroidism itself only showed improvement months later.

[Changes in plasma and whole blood viscosity during starvation (author's transl)].

More than 6000 parameters were collected during a 21-day period of starvation in 51 obese patients aged 17 to 65 years and stored as data bank on a CDC CYBER 74 at the calculating centre of the University of Technology in Vienna. Samples for multiple linear regression were obtained on the basis of various selective criteria. The essential results of this analysis are the depression of plasma viscosity, which correlates positively with the decrease in blood lipids and the reduction of overweight, as well as the unexpected increase in whole blood viscosity. The latter can probably be explained by an altered erythrocytic fluidity due to the metabolic changes which take place during a longer period of starvation.
