Diagnostic accuracy of a new non-invasive enzyme immunoassay for detecting Helicobacter pylori in stools after eradication therapy.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy has been commonly performed for patients with peptic ulcer. An inexpensive, reliable, non-invasive test would be useful for evaluation of the effectiveness of eradication therapy. AIM: To evaluate the diagnostic potential of a new non-invasive enzyme immunoassay (HpSA) for H. pylori antigen in stools. METHODS: A total of 112 peptic ulcer patients with H. pylori infection (82 male, 30 female; age range 22-81 years, mean 54 years) received a course of eradication therapy. Four weeks after the end of the therapy, stool samples were collected from all patients and tested using the HpSA. The diagnostic accuracy of the HpSA EIA was evaluated in comparison with the results of a 13C-urea breath test. RESULTS: The diagnostic sensitivity of HpSA EIA after eradication therapy was 90%, the specificity 98%, the positive predictive value 82% and the negative predictive value 99%. CONCLUSION: The HpSA stool test is potentially useful for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection 4 weeks after the end of eradication therapy.

Efficacy of sucralfate for Helicobacter pylori eradication triple therapy in comparison with a lansoprazole-based regimen.

BACKGROUND: Sucralfate has an inhibitory action against Helicobacter pylori and enhances the anti-H. pylori activity of antimicrobials. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of sucralfate-based eradication therapy for H. pylori infection, compared with that based on lansoprazole, in a randomized multicentre study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The subjects were 150 H. pylori-positive patients. They were randomly assigned to one of two regimens for 2 weeks: sucralfate 1 g t.d.s., amoxycillin 500 mg t.d.s., and clarithromycin 400 mg b.d. (SAC regimen: 75 patients); or lansoprazole 30 mg o.m. with the same antimicrobial medications (LAC regimen: 75 patients). Cure of infection was assessed by a 13C urea breath test 1 month after completion of treatment. RESULTS: Eight patients (four in the SAC group and four in LAC group) could not continue therapy because of severe diarrhoea, and three did not take the 13C urea breath test after therapy. Cure rates for intention-to-treat, all-patients-treated, and per protocol analysis in the SAC group were 80%, 83%, and 88%, respectively, and those in the LAC group were 87%, 87%, and 92%, respectively. There were no significant differences in cure rate or adverse effects between the two regimens. CONCLUSION: Sucralfate in combination with amoxycillin and clarithromycin is as effective as lansoprazole-based eradication therapy for H. pylori.

Airway obstruction during general anaesthesia in a child with congenital tracheomalacia.

Fibreoptic bronchoscopy is often used to diagnose tracheomalacia under local anaesthesia. However, in children, general anaesthesia may be required due to difficulty in obtaining co-operation. A 1-yr-old girl with a suspected congenital tracheomalacia was scheduled for diagnostic fibreoptic bronchoscopy. During induction of anaesthesia by inhalation of increasing concentration of sevoflurane, spontaneous breathing became irregular and a partial airway obstruction occurred. Because vecuronium relieved the airway obstruction, the airway was managed using a laryngeal mask. No further airway obstruction occurred during fibrescopy under controlled ventilation, but when spontaneous breathing resumed, marked airway obstruction occurred. The trachea was intubated immediately. Caution is required to manage the airway without tracheal intubation during general anaesthesia in the patient with tracheomalacia.

Inhibition of immunoglobulin E response to Japanese cedar pollen allergen (Cry j 1) in mice by DNA immunization: different outcomes dependent on the plasmid DNA inoculation method.

To develop a new immunotherapy for Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica; CJ) pollinosis, we evaluated the use of DNA immunization by inoculating mice with plasmid DNA encoding Cry j 1 as a CJ pollen major allergen (pCACJ1). Repeated intramuscular (i.m.) inoculation of BALB/c mice with pCACJ1 produced anti-Cry j 1 antibody responses, which were predominately of the immunoglobulin G2a (IgG2a) type. Furthermore, this inoculation suppressed immunoglobulin E (IgE) and IgG1 antibody responses to subsequent alum-precipitated Cry j 1 injections. Splenic T cells isolated from mice inoculated with pCACJ1 i.m. secreted interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), but not interleukin (IL)-4, in vitro upon stimulation with Cry j 1 as well as with p277-288, a peptide corresponding to the T-cell epitope of Cry j 1. In contrast, inoculation of BALB/c mice with pCACJ1 by gene gun injection caused response predominantly of the IgG1 type, and enhanced production of anti-Cry j 1 IgE antibodies to subsequent alum-precipitated Cry j 1 injections. Splenic T cells isolated from pCACJ1-innoculated mice by gene gun injection secreted both IFN-gamma and IL-4 in vitro, upon stimulation with Cry j 1 as well as with p277-288. These findings suggest that i.m. inoculation with pCACJ1 effectively elicits Cry j 1-specific T helper 1 (Th1)-type immune responses, resulting in inhibition of the IgE response to Cry j 1.

Review article: acute inorganic mercury vapor inhalation poisoning.

Mercury contamination is a serious environmental problem worldwide. Two primary sources of contamination are dumping of large quantities of inorganic mercury and exposure in the mining industry. Although the actual fatal level of mercury vapor is not known, exposure to more than 1-2 mg/m3 of elemental mercury vapor (Hg0) for a few hours causes acute chemical bronchiolitis and pneumonitis. Two hours after exposure, lung injury appears as hyaline membrane formation, and finally, extensive pulmonary fibrosis occurs. Clinical findings correlate with the duration of exposure, the concentration of mercury, and the survival time after exposure. There is no correlation between pathological findings and the concentration of mercury in the tissues. Necrosis of proximal convoluted tubules may be attributed to the disruption of the enzyme systems of Hg2+-sulfhydryl compounds. Metallothionein protein (MT), induced by the accumulation of Hg2+ in the kidneys, may play an important role in detoxication after it forms a non-toxic Hg2+-MT compound. Despite the deposition of mercury in the brain, compared with organic mercury, inorganic mercury did not seem to damage the neurons. Drugs such as chelating agents and corticosteroids appear to effectively decrease the inflammation and delay pulmonary fibrosis.

Immunohistochemical expression of neural tissue markers (neuron-specific enolase, glial fibrillary acidic protein, S100 protein) in ameloblastic fibrodentinoma: a comparative study with ameloblastic fibroma.

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections of three cases of ameloblastic fibrodentinoma (AFD) were studied by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method using antibodies against neuron-specific enolase (NSE), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and S100 protein and the results were compared with those in ameloblastic fibroma (AF). A striking histopathological characteristic of AFD was the formation of abortive dentin with various degrees of maturation at the epithelial-mesenchymal tissue interface. Central cells of enamel organ-like epithelia with various stages of abortive dentin induction in AFD were generally positive for NSE. Dental lamina-like epithelial cells also showed positive staining in some areas. No cells were positive for NSE in AF. Positive staining for GFAP was observed in the juxta-epithelial mesenchymal tissue of the formation stage of immature dentin with various numbers of entrapped cells in AFD, but GFAP staining was negative in other mesenchymal and epithelial tissues at other stages. In AF, no GFAP-positive cells were found. There were a few S100 protein-positive cells found in the foci of epithelial components in both AFD and AF. Mesenchymal cells showing a dendritic or spindle shape were positive for S100 protein in some areas of AFD and AF. Although such cells in the mesenchymal component of pigmented AFD were more numerous than in non-pigmented AFD and AF, their distribution pattern in the former condition was basically similar to that in the latter. Although the present results, obtained from conventional immunohistochemical procedures, do not directly reflect the expression of neural crest-derived cells in the dentinogenesis of AFD, such results do not disprove the possibility of the expression of neural proteins probably related to neural crest-derived cells in dentinogenesis under certain pathologic conditions in odontogenic mixed tumors. Such a phenomenon may also occur during dentinogenesis in other odontogenic mixed tumors and in normal tooth differentiation, but at an undetectable level.

Low serum lipids suggest severe bone marrow failure in children with aplastic anemia.

BACKGROUND: Significantly low serum lipid levels are occasionally seen at the time of diagnosis in children with aplastic anemia (AA). The aim of the present study was to clarify the pathologic and clinical significance of pretreatment serum lipid levels in AA. METHODS: A questionnaire seeking precise data about AA in pediatric patients, including the initial laboratory data at the time of onset of AA and the clinical course of these patients, was sent to 18 institutes in Japan; 13 institutes responded to the questionnaire. In this retrospective study, data concerning hematologic examination and serum lipids were available for analysis in 127 children with AA. Serum lipoprotein patterns were analyzed using conventional agarose electrophoresis in eight patients. In order to elucidate the cause of hypolipidemia in AA, we assayed serum macrophage colony stimulating factor (M-CSF), which is well known to have apparent cholesterol-lowering activity, by using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in seven patients with hypocholesterolemia and compared the results with those obtained in patients with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). RESULTS: We found that pretreatment total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride levels in the serum correlated well with counts of both nucleated cells and hemopoietic cells in the bone marrow (BM) and were inversely correlated with the lymphocyte ratio in both the BM and peripheral blood. Patients with serum TC lower than 150 mg/dL showed a poor response to any form of therapy except BM transplantation. There was no difference in the serum lipoprotein patterns between the controls and patients examined. The serum M-CSF level was significantly higher in patients with TC levels lower than 150 mg/dL compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that the pretreatment serum lipid level may reflect hematopoietic activity within the BM and can help to predict the therapeutic response of each case of AA to treatment with immunosuppressive drugs, corticosteroids and anabolic steroids. These results also indicate that M-CSF may be one of the contributing causes of the hypocholesterolemia that occurs in both AA and IDA.

Significance of percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass support for volume reduction surgery with severe hypercapnia.

In patients with reduced respiratory function, lung resection is associated with high risk because separate ventilation is generally needed for safe management. For patients with end-stage emphysema, intraoperative respiratory management is important and particularly difficult because neither incomplete oxygenation nor selective ventilation can be performed, so the operation may be interrupted. In this study, we assess the effectiveness of the percutaneous cardiopulmonary support (PCPS) system for lung volume reduction surgery in patients with severe hypercapnia (arterial carbon dioxide tension >50 mm Hg) and discuss the significance of PCPS for patients who are beyond the standard criteria for lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS). We studied 3 patients with severe hypercapnia due to emphysema who underwent volume reduction surgery. One patient was previously treated surgically for contralateral pneumothorax. All patients had a severe smoking history and were suspected to have fragile lungs. During the operation. PCPS provided sufficient support flow. Intraoperative management using PCPS was easy, and no severe complications were observed. One patient exhibited severe hemodynamic deterioration on postoperative Day 15. Other patients' PaCO2 improved postoperatively. One had a calcification of a femoral artery, but there was no trouble inserting a cannula. Bilateral or unilateral volume reduction surgery was performed under PCPS in patients with end-stage emphysema. We conclude that PCPS is an adjunct to LVRS, useful for intraoperative management of some patients with severe hypercapnea, and the LVRS indications can be extended.

Neutrophil chemoattractant 2 beta regulates expression of the Reg gene in injured gastric mucosa in rats.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Regenerating (Reg) protein has a trophic effect on gastric mucosal cells. We have shown that Reg gene expression is increased in enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells during the healing of damaged gastric mucosa around mucosal erosion. This study was designed to explore the stimulants of Reg expression during the healing of gastric mucosal damage. METHODS: Time course changes of the expression of genes for various proinflammatory cytokines and Reg were investigated after induction of gastric mucosal lesions in rats. The direct effect of proinflammatory cytokines on Reg gene expression and Reg protein production were investigated in vitro using counterflow elutriation-enriched rat ECL cells. CXC receptor 2 (CXCR-2) expression was investigated in ECL cells by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Reg gene expression was also investigated in rats treated by the neutralizing antibody of cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant (CINC-2 beta). RESULTS: During healing, the gene expression of several proinflammatory cytokines and Reg was markedly augmented. Among the proinflammatory cytokines, CINC-2 beta is the only cytokine in which augmented expression preceded the increase of Reg gene expression. In rats treated with CINC-2 beta neutralizing antibody, the augmentation of Reg gene expression was significantly inhibited. When ECL cells were incubated with these proinflammatory cytokines, CINC-2 beta dose-dependently increased Reg messenger RNA and Reg protein in ECL cells. CXCR-2 was identified in isolated ECL cells. CONCLUSIONS: CINC-2 beta, expressed in damaged gastric mucosa, stimulates the production of Reg protein in ECL cells via CXCR-2 and may be involved in the accelerated healing of injured gastric mucosa.

Allelic losses of 17p, 5q, and 18q loci in diploid and aneuploid populations of multiploid colorectal carcinomas.

17p, 5q, and 18q allelic losses are involved in the pathogenesis and progression of colorectal carcinoma, and DNA aneuploidy in this type of cancer is thought to result from alterations of these chromosomal loci. However, genetic differences between diploid and aneuploid populations of multiploid carcinoma, defined as the coexistence of diploid and aneuploid populations in the same area, remain unclear. The differences in 17p, 5q, and 18q allelic losses between the diploid and aneuploid populations in 24 sporadic DNA multiploid colorectal carcinomas were analyzed by use of crypt isolation coupled with DNA cytometric sorting and polymerase chain reaction assay. 17p Allelic loss was observed in 7 of 22 diploid populations excluding 1 case of microsatellite instability but was found in 21 of 23 aneuploid populations. Although 5q allelic loss was detected in only 3 of 22 diploid populations, 13 of 22 aneuploid populations had 5q allelic loss. Losses of the 18q allele were frequently found in aneuploid populations (15 of 20), although no 18q allelic loss was detected in corresponding diploid populations. 17p Allelic losses may play an important role in the progression from a diploid status to an aneuploid status in a specific subset of colorectal cancer. However, 18q or 5q allelic losses do not appear to precede nor to facilitate the aneuploid clonal divergence of cancer cells. Multiploidy is a useful model to study genetic alterations between diploid and aneuploid populations.

Clinical significance of expression of membrane type 1 matrix metalloproteinase and matrix metalloproteinase-2 in human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Three different membrane-type matrix metalloproteinases (MT-MMPs) activate in vitro the latent form of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), which is one of the key proteinases in invasion and metastasis of various cancers. We examined the mRNA expression of MT1, 2, and 3-MMPs and MMP-2 in cell lines of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and quantitated the relative expression levels in human HNSCC tissues by Northern blotting. The tissue localization of MT1-MMP and MMP-2 was determined by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Their implications in clinicopathologic factors were statistically evaluated. All cell lines examined consistently expressed MT1-MMP and MMP-2, but not MT2, 3-MMP. In the clinical specimens, there was a significant correlation in coexpression of messenger of RNA (P = .0005) and colocalization by immunohistochemistry (P < .0001) for MT1-MMP and MMP-2. Relative mRNA expression levels of MT1-MMP and MMP-2 in the carcinoma tissues were significantly higher than those of the control tissues (P = .0045 and P = .0122, respectively). Both mRNA expression level and immunopositivity of MT1-MMP significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis (P = .0081 and P = .0193, respectively), which was confirmed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Immunoreaction of MT1-MMP and its mRNA expression were observed in both carcinoma cells and stromal cells. The localization of MMP-2 closely corresponded to that of MT1-MMP. These observations suggest that MT1-MMP possesses a role as a determinant of lymph node metastasis in HNSCC, and that concurrent expression of MT1-MMP and MMP-2 are involved in progression of HNSCC.

Expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)gamma in gastric cancer and inhibitory effects of PPARgamma agonists.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) gamma is expressed in human colon cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer cells, and PPARgamma activation induces growth inhibition in these cells. PPARgamma expression in human gastric cancer cells, however, has not been fully investigated. We report the PPARgamma expression in human gastric cancer, and the effect of PPARgamma ligands on proliferation of gastric carcinoma cell lines. Immunohistochemistry was used to demonstrate the presence of PPARgamma protein in surgically resected specimens from well differentiated, moderately differentiated and poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. We used reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Northern and Western blot analyses to demonstrate PPARgamma expression in four human gastric cancer cell lines. PPARgamma agonists (troglitazone and 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14)-prostaglandin J2) showed dose-dependent inhibitory effects on the proliferation of the gastric cancer cells, and their effect was augmented by the simultaneous addition of 9- cis retinoic acid, a ligand of RXRalpha. Flow cytometry demonstrated G1 cell cycle arrest and a significant increase of annexin V-positive cells after treatment with troglitazone. These results suggest that induction of apoptosis together with G1 cell cycle arrest may be one of the mechanisms of the antiproliferative effect of PPARgamma activation in human gastric cancer cells.

Surgical outcome of mycobacterium other than mycobacterium tuberculosis pulmonary disease.

Between January 1995 and May 1999, MOTT were cultured from sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage or resected lung specimens in 110 cases. 17 patients with MOTT pulmonary disease underwent pulmonary resection. Preoperatively, 5 of 17 patients had been diagnosed with MOTT pulmonary disease. The diagnosis of others was based on positive cultures from surgically resected material, and organism identification was successfully performed by the microplate DNA-DNA hybridization procedure. Surgical resections performed included wedge resection in 7, lobectomy in 6, and segmentectomy in 4. Antibiotics were generally continued for 6 to 24 months postoperatively. However, postoperative antibiotics therapy was not performed for patients who were postoperatively diagnosed with foci localized at the peripheral lung. Resected specimens yielded positive cultures for MOTT in all patients. There were no patients infected with M. konsasii. Regarding postoperative complications, 1 late bronchopleural fistula developed after right upper and middle lobectomy, and was treated with omentopexy. Persistent air leaks (> 7 days) occurred in 5 patients, none of which occurred where linear stapling devices fitted with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) sleeves were used. One patient diagnosed with M. szulgai postoperatively experienced reactivation 2 years after middle lobectomy despite postoperative antibiotic therapy for 6 months. Other patients have remained free of disease postoperatively. Surgical resection achieve good results for MOTT pulmonary disease, and wedge resection or segmentectomy without postoperative antibiotic therapy was enough for patients whose foci localized at the peripheral lung and whose sputum or BAL cultures revealed no MOTT. Surgical treatment should be performed as early as possible before the pulmonary disease necessitates an extensive operation, and ePTFE sleeves were effective in preventing a postoperative prolonged air leak.

Recombinant human complement C5a receptor antagonist reduces infarct size after surgical revascularization.

OBJECTIVES: This study tested the hypothesis that a recombinant human C5a antagonist, CGS 32359, attenuates neutrophil activation and reduces infarct size in a porcine model of surgical revascularization. METHODS: CGS 32359 (0.16-16 micromol/L) dose-dependently inhibited superoxide production by human C5a-activated porcine neutrophils (18 +/- 3.7 vs 1.6 +/- 0.5 nmol/5 min/5 x 10(6) neutrophils; P <.05) and reduced neutrophil adherence to coronary endothelium from 194 +/- 9 to 43 +/- 6 neutrophils/mm(2) (P <.05). The left anterior descending coronary artery was occluded for 50 minutes, after which saline solution (n = 8), mannitol-buffer vehicle (n = 9, 102 mg/kg bolus, 102 mg. kg(-1). h(-1)), or CGS 32359 (CGS, n = 7, 60 mg/kg bolus, 60 mg. kg(-1). h(-1)) was infused. After ischemia, 1-hour arrest was achieved by means of multidose hypothermic (4 degrees C) blood cardioplegia, followed by 2.5 hours of off-bypass reperfusion. The ligature on the left anterior descending artery was released before the second infusion of cardioplegic solution. RESULTS: Area at risk was similar in all groups (saline solution, 27% +/- 2%; mannitol-buffer vehicle, 26% +/- 2%; CGS, 26% +/- 2% left ventricular mass). Infarct size (area necrosis/area at risk) was significantly reduced by CGS (18% +/- 6%, P <.05) versus saline solution (52% +/- 3%) and mannitol-buffer vehicle (60% +/- 4%). Postischemic systolic shortening (sonomicrometry) in the area at risk was significantly improved with CGS (0.8% +/- 0.9%) compared with saline solution (-3.7% +/- 1.1%) and mannitol-buffer vehicle (-6.4% +/- 1.0%). Myeloperoxidase activity from accumulated neutrophils was less in the ischemic zone of CGS (0.014 +/- 0.002 U/100 mg tissue; P <.05) than mannitol-buffer vehicle (0.133 +/- 0.012 U/100 mg tissue). CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the recombinant human C5a receptor antagonist CGS 32359 inhibits surgical ischemia-reperfusion injury after coronary occlusion.

The effect of glycogen depletion on the curvature constant parameter of the power-duration curve for cycle ergometry.

For high-intensity cycle ergometer exercise, the relation between power (P) and its tolerable duration (t) has been well characterized by the hyperbolic relationship: (P-thetaF) t = W', or P = W' (1/t)+thetaF, where thetaF may be termed the 'fatigue threshold'. The curvature constant (W') reflects a constant amount of work which is postulated to be equivalent to a finite energy store that relates to the oxygen-deficit: phosphagen pool, anaerobic glycolysis and oxygen stores. Compared to thetaF, the physiological nature of W' has received little consideration. The purpose of this study was therefore to establish the parameters of the power-duration curve (thetaF and W') for subjects in normal glycogen (NG) and glycogen depleted (GD) states. Seven healthy male subjects (aged 22 to 41 years) each performed four high-intensity square-wave exercise bouts on an electrically braked cycle ergometer under two different muscular glycogen content conditions, i.e. NG and GD states. Subjects performed the following exercise on the evening before the trial day to induce the GD state. Initially, they performed a 75-min cycling exercise at 60% of VO2max. After a 5-min rest period, they subsequently repeated a 1-min cycling bout at 115% of VO2max (separated by 1-min rest periods) until the subject could no longer maintain the prescribed pedal rate for the full minute. Subjects then reported to the laboratory after an overnight fast and performed a single high-intensity exercise bout. The GD procedure was repeated four times at 1-week intervals. In the GD state, the respiratory exchange ratio (RER) (VO2/VCO2) value during a recumbent control period prior to the trial was significantly lower than that in the NG state [GD: 0.84+/-0.02, NG: 0.94+/-0.04, mean +/- SD]. There was no significant difference for thetaF between GD and NG state [NG: 197.1+/-31.9 W, GD: 190.6+/-28.2 W]. W' in contrast was significantly reduced by the GD procedure [NG: 12.83+/-2.21 kJ, GD: 10.33+/-2.41 kJ]. The present results indicate that the muscular glycogen store seems to be an important determinant of the curvature constant (W') of the power-duration curve for cycle ergometry.

Radiation-induced tissue abnormalities in fetal brain are related to apoptosis immediately after irradiation.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relation between the incidence of radiation-induced tissue abnormalities in fetal brain and the extent of p53-dependent apoptosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pregnant mice with wild-type p53(+/+), heterozygous p53(+/-) and homozygous mutant p53(-/-) fetuses received whole-body X-irradiation on day 13 of gestation. The extent of apoptosis 6 hr after irradiation and the incidence of tissue abnormalities 3 days after irradiation in the brain were evaluated by histological examination of brain mantle. RESULTS: The percentage of apoptotic cells increased linearly with dose in p53(+/+) and p53(+/-) fetuses, but no increase was found in p53(-/-). Approximately twice the dose was necessary in p53(+/-) fetuses to induce an apoptotic response to the extent observed in p53(+/+). Fetuses with brain-tissue abnormalities, such as a destroyed ventricular lining and rosettes with a central hollow appeared at a dose of 1.5 and 3.0 Gy, and the incidence was markedly increased following a dose of 2.25 and 3.75Gy in p53(+/+) and p53(+/-) mice, respectively, but no fetus with tissue abnormalities appeared in p53(-/-) at up to 3.75 Gy. Approximately twice the dose was necessary in p53(+/-) fetuses to induce brain-tissue abnormalities to the extent seen in p53(+/+) mice. CONCLUSION: The extent of apoptosis 6 hr after irradiation and the incidence and severity of brain-tissue abnormalities 3 days after irradiation corresponded well, suggesting that radiation-induced tissue abnormalities, such as destroyed ventricular lining, deranged glial fibre and appearance of rosettes in fetal brain were closely related to apoptosis seen 6 hr after irradiation.
