Immunoreactive calcitonin in brain regions and pituitary of sheep.

In this study we have investigated the presence of immunoreactive calcitonin in the central nervous system and pituitary of sheep. The calcitonin concentrations were determined radioimmunologically by two different antibodies. We have demonstrated calcitonin in extracts of areas of the central nervous system, whole pituitary, thyroid gland and plasma of 21 sheep. The concentrations were (ng/g wet weight, mean values +/- SE): thyroid 16.0 +/- 4.4, pituitary 2.03 +/- 0.34, reticular formation 1.64 +/- 0.25, substantia nigra 1.53 +/- 0.46, dentate nucleus 1.11 +/- 0.27, putamen 1.05 +/- 0.35, hippocampus 0.97 +/- 0.17, fornix 0.96 +/- 0.15, anterior thalamus 0.92 +/- 0.28, mammillary body 0.88 +/- 0.12, cerebellum 0.86 +/- 0.09, caudate nucleus 0.84 +/- 0.11, posterior hypothalamus 0.83 +/- 0.19, epiphysis 0.75 +/- 0.25, thalamus centralis 0.71 +/- 0.10, almond nucleus 0.69 +/- 0.16, medulla oblongata 0.67 +/- 0.15, anterior hypothalamus 0.66 +/- 0.20, precentral gyrus 0.66 +/- 0.16, globus pallidus 0.63 +/- 0.31, postcentral gyrus 0.36 +/- 0.08 and plasma (ng/ml) 0.058 +/- 0.013. Our results demonstrate that immunoreactive calcitonin is present in the central nervous system (CNS) of sheep, compatible with a neurotransmitter function for this hormone.

[Epidemiologic study on the etiopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis].

A computer-aided evaluation of those affected with multiple sclerosis (n = 90) with regard to the actually discussed hypothesis on the aetiology of this disease results in 10 significant signs. These signs in their majority support the combined hypothesis of a disturbed regulation of infection and immunity. Frequently, as early as in childhood and youth the upper airways are affected, and this is coupled with a severe course of the disease. The incidence also shows familially and territorially frequent occurrences.

Rorschach norms for inner city children.

Rorschach data for 272 Black children are presented in age groups from 3 to 12. The Rorschach characteristics presented are F+%, A%, Fabulized Combinations, Perseverations, Color Naming, Rejections, Wholes, Details, Small Details (Dd), R, M, and P. Comparisons with Ames and Exner reveal a lower form accuracy level, and a lower percentage of Wholes, with a higher D level. Response rate, rate of development of the M response, rate of development of the P response, and of the Animal response are very similar to the other normative samples.

Effects of lead poisoning on cognitive test performance.

47 lead-poisoned children, treated and without encephalopathy, are compared with sibling controls on perceptual-verbal pattern comparisons of subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children to determine whether there has been brain damage. Both groups of children do not differ significantly from each other on comparisons of these patterns, and they appear to be similar to each other in WISC functioning. The conclusion is that lead-poisoning, treated, and without encephalopathy, does not result in detectable brain damage by means of these pattern analyses.

Biosynthesis of neurophysin proteins in the dog and their isolation.

Neurophysin (Np) is generally found in close association with vasopressin and oxytocin in the hypothalamo-neurohypophyseal complex. Dog neurophysin I and II have been isolated from fresh and frozen posterior pituitaries. The proteins were characterized on the basis of disc electrophoresis, immunological properties, amino acid composition and partial sequence determination. The amino terminal sequence of dog Np I is Ala-Ala-Leu-Asp-Leu-Asp-Val-Arg-Gln-Cys-Leu-Pro-Cys-Gly-Pro-Gly-Gly-Gln-Gly-while that of dog Np-II is Ala-Met-Ser-Asp-Leu-Glu-Leu. The dog Np I appears to be metabolically less stable than Np II. Isotope experiments with [35S]cystine or 3H-labeled amino acids using a design of "in vitro pulse and in vitro chase" as well as "in vivo pulse and in vivo chase," added further confirmation of the capability of the hypothalamic neurosecretory cells to synthesize concomitantly precursors of Np and vasopressin. The radioactively labeled precursors were converted to Np-like protein and vasopressin, both of which were isolated.

[Can the high percentage of premature twins be reduced? Thoughts based on an analysis of 243 twin births].

243 twinpregnancies of the university hospital at Hamburg between 1960 to 1969 have been analysed retrospectively (1960 to 1964 = Group A, 1965 to 1969 = Group B). It was found that the main risk factors of gemellary gravidity are the high rate of born before term babies the high rate of EPH-gestosis, and the high rate of perinatal mortality. 57 respectively 65% of all gemellipara had one or more symptoms of EPH-gestosis. Measured by birth weight (less than 2500 g = pre-term and small for gestational age infants) greater than 50% of the twins of group A and B were of low birth weight. The perinatal mortality of multiple pregnancy of all groups of birth weight was 11.6% in group A and 13.3% in group B. The perinatal mortality of not premature newborn with greater than 2500 g was 10 times lower and has been corrected from 1.1% (group A) to 0.5% (group B). Gemellipara, younger than 20 and elder than 30 years of age, show the maximum rate of perinatal mortality. Twins should be diagnosed in time of pregnancy. This allows pre-term hospitalisation with routine testing of placental function and if necessary prophylactic therapy of immature labour. This offers more promise to prevention of prematurity and leads to progress satisfactorily with multiple pregnancy.

[Duffy-blood-factor incompatibility during pregnancy (author's transl)].

Routine screening of maternal antibodies showed presence of anti-Fya (from the antigen Fya of Duffy Blood Group System) in a 25 years old second time pregnant woman. The spectroscopic examination of amniotic fluid has been carried out and gave values which decrease within Zone II. In the beginning of 39. week of gestation a mature newborn has been delivered, who survived without need of exchange transfusion immediately after birth.

[Histological diagnosis, DNA-content and chromatin pattern of breast cancer cases with positive and negative 17-beta-oestradiol receptor binding (author's transl)].

The DNA-concent of cell nuclei of 45 breast cancer cases of various histological structure has been determined cytophotometrically. With the exception of two gallert carcinomas no DNA-histogram of peridiploid range was found. The average DNA-content was 2--3 times higher as in the control tissue. The standard deviation of undifferentiated solid mammary tumors was the highest measured in this series. 24 of 45 cases had a negative oestrogen receptor binding. This was true in 60% of the undiffierentiated solid breast cancer cases, in 69% of the adenomatous and in 89 respectively 67% of the ones of special histological structure. The heterochromatin content of nuclei was lowest in the group of differentiated mammary cancer (50--60%). In the group of undifferentiated tumors it was 60--70%. So much for now is known about the mechanism of cellular action of 17-beta-oestradiol and the function of eu- and heterochromatin of cell nuclei it is discussed that positive or negative oestrogen hormone receptor binding in mammary tumor cells is probably a biochemical parameter of cytological desintegration. From this point of view these hormon receptors could be of the same value as the index of Barr bodies in breast cancer cells with respect of selection of cases for hormonal therapy. But this has to be analyzed in further studies extensively.
