Family coping, styles, and challenges.

Creating a therapeutic partnership with patients and families during their crisis with cancer is both a challenging and extremely rewarding experience for the oncology nurse. Each family brings to the experience its own structure, maturational stage, culture, and history. They bring individual and group emotional responses, coping strategies and conflicts when confronting a disease over which they have no control. This article describes the nature of contemporary families within the context of initial and ongoing nursing assessment. It also provides examples of family cancer experiences and the therapeutic approaches selected by nurses faced with the challenges of individual and family coping styles.

Managers' ability to perform: individual and collective assessment findings.

Changes in role responsibilities, organizational relationships and mix of professional and non-licensed personnel have increased the need for well prepared managers who can be effective in new work environments. Because such individuals are not readily available, identification of potential managers and development of incumbents are crucial. This article describes how four hospitals used the same unique assessment system to identify the strengths and limitations of 116 managers, the implications of their findings, and subsequent interventions. Suggested also are activities with potential for meeting hospitals' future needs for effective managers.

Practical approaches to marketing.

Marketing in health care is the process of developing, promoting, and administrating health care services to a client for the benefit of both. The success of a nurse executive in the area of marketing is dependent on the appropriate application of marketing principles, including assessment and/or awareness of needs, development of new services, promotion of current and new services, and target market development. The author discusses how the nurse executive can aggressively promote services based on consumer demand states and effectively use advertising, publicity, and personal promotion strategies.

MMPI results: a comparison of trauma victims, psychogenic pain, and patients with organic disease.

Made comparison using MMPI T scores on three private psychiatric sub-populations: Post-trauma patients, patients with organically based illness, and patients with psychogenic pain (complaints functional in origin) (N = 78). The standard 3 validity and 10 clinical scales were used to evaluate possible differences among the groups. Differences were presented among the groups on scales 3 (Hy), 9 (Ma), and (F). Individual profiles also were assessed. In patients with a 1-3/3-1 profile, the psychogenic group had significantly higher elevation over the post-trauma and organic groups. In patients with 8 (Sc) or 9 (Ma) high both with and without 1-3/3-1 high, differences were found; the post-trauma and organic groups showed marked elevation over those in the psychogenic group. Results indicate the MMPI to be a viable aid in distinguishing between patients with post-trauma stress disorder vs. those with functional disorders. The data suggest that MMPI profiles of patients with post-trauma stress disorder more closely resemble the MMPI profiles of patients who have organic disease with pain caused by organic pathology than the profiles of patients with psychogenic pain and/or hypochondriasis.
