[Comparative analysis of basic spirometric parameters accepted by various authors as values (norms) belonging to the same person, and an attempt to find values of these parameters that are proper for the population of young males in Poland].

Results of VC and FEV1 measurements in 283 males aged 18-40 years were the basic for "own standard" calculation. Measured values of VC and FEV1 obtained from males being tested were compared to values resulting from Baldwin, Berglund, Kory, Knudson, Morris, Nikodemowicz, CECA standards and own one. Measured values for VC did not differ from own standard and that of Morris. Measured values for FEV1 did not differ only from own standard, and were greater than all of the compared standards. According to both the standards of the discussed authors and own standard, due values of VC and FEV1 were found for "theoretical males" of 18-40 years and height 150-195 cm. For these "theoretical males" the highest due values of VC were recorded in CECA nomogram, and due values of VC from own standard did not differ from Morris standard. Due FEV1 values from own standard were compatible with due values of CECA. It has been stated that for the assessment of spirometric tests for males aged 18-40 years in Poland, Morris standard should be currently accepted for VC values, and CECA standard for FEV1.

[Spirographic predicted values for young men in Poland].

Basing on results of VC and FEV1 measurements in 293 males of the age group 15-40 years using the regression calculations new predictive values were calculated. These values were compared with values published 27 years earlier by Nikodemowicz and Morris's normograms. The latter published the highest reference values, on which most computer programs are based on. The analysis demonstrated significantly higher predictive values compared to those of Nikodemowicz, and comparable with the Morris's normograms. It seems that the latter can be used for reference values in Poland.

[Comparative assessment of the theoretical values of vital capacity (VC) considered normal by various authors].

Values of VC for "theoretical subjects" of comparable sexes, age, height were found in tables and normograms according to Baldwin, Berglund, Kory, Nikodemowicz and Morris. For each series of values, mean, standard deviation, minimal, maximal, and median values were calculated. A differential test was performed to assess significance. Statistically significant differences were found. The highest values were expressed by Morris lowest by Berglund. It seems that one should rather use real values instead of predicted and new reference values are needed due to a change of height-age relation during the past 20 years.

[Comparative analysis of basic spirometric parameters recognized by different authors as normal values for the same individuals].

Basic spirometric parameters (VC, FEV1, MVV) were recorded in 60 people (30 males and 30 females) without ventilatory disturbances. These results were compared with the normal values of Berglund, Kory, Cournand, Morris and Nikodemowicz. A statistical analysis was carried out using the differential test. The results differed significantly between each other. The most stable parameter that did not differ was FEV1. This may be an argument for calculating IMBC rather than recording maximal ventilatory response.

[Life stress events and individual reactions to stress in relation to illness].

Data was collected from 90 persons in relation to the level of their emotional reactions to life's difficulties as well as to the number of somatic symptoms. It was concluded that falling ill with certain infectious diseases and some psychosomatic states are related to the increased level of emotional processes and the number of psychosomatic symptoms to stress.
