Complications of the chronic subdural hematoma.

Eighty three chronic subdural hematomas, obtained by surgery or by necropsy, were examinated. The patient age distribution curve of the non-complicated operative cases showed the highest incidence in the first year of life and also a moderate increase in the elderly group. Recurrent hemorrhage in the walls and in the cavity, was observed in twenty of the seventy three non-complicated cases of chronic subdural hematoma. In five cases the membranes and the subdural sac were invaded by leucemic cells and in the five remaining ones the hematoma was transformed in a subdural empyema. All these complicated subdural hematomas showed evidence of recurrent bleeding, suggesting that the leucemic cells or the infectious agent had spread to the subdural space by this way.

Gastric xanthoma.

Gastric xanthoma (GX) consists of a small yellowish lesion of the gastric mucosa, frequently of multiple occurrence; histologically, there is an accumulation of lipid-laden histiocytes in the lamina propria. Seven cases are reported. One patient also had jejunal localizations. There is no correlation with hypercholesterolemia but in four cases a slight hypertriglyceridemia was found. A control gastroscopy, performed in four cases, revealed no changes in the first patient but a decrease in size in a second and the disappearance of GX in two other patients.

Intercomparison program of lead, mercury, and cadmium analysis in blood, urine, and aqueous solutions.

Sixty-six European laboratories participated in an intercomparison program of lead, mercury, and cadmium analysis in blood, urine, and aqueous solutions. The experimental protocol was designed in such a way that the effect of precision, experience, and analytical method could be evaluated. For all the analyses, the scatter of the reported results is important. The major factor influencing the variability of the results is the intralaboratory variation. Analytical methods and degree of experience do not seem to have a significant influence. However, with the exception of mercury determination in urine, a satisfactory intralaboratory precision is not sufficient to make the interlaboratory variation acceptable. It appears that systematic errors are responsible for the high interlaboratory variation observed between "precise" laboratories.

[Influence of thioacetamide on nucleolar apparatus of the liver. Cytophotometric study].

The nucleolus associated chromatin in Feulgen-stained liver cells of TAA treated rats is studied using the Lison cytophotometer. The results indicate that the increase in nucleolar volume in these hepatocytes is accompanied by an increase in Feulgen-DNA contents of the nucleolar apparatus, both in rats treated with a normal standard diet and with a Miller and Price diet. This increase is maximal 2 days after a single dose of 10 mg/100 g body weight and reaches 50 and 25% respectively. These results are discussed with consideration to mitosis, distributional error and the metabolic DNA hypothesis.
