Cancer morbidity.

In the present study, 1736 cases of cancer has been analysed by major sites, sub-sites and mortality trend. The most common cancerous lesion in the male was in the lungs and in the female in the uterine cervix. The second common lesion in male and female were larynx and breast respectively. In children, retinoblastoma was the commonest type of cancer.

Salmonella in foods of animal origin: enterotoxigenicity and antibiogram.

A total of 82 strains of Salmonella belonging to 17 different serotypes recovered from foods of animal origin were in this study. Out of 39 cell free culture supernatants (CFCS), tested for enterotoxigenicity, 26 (66.67%) were positive in rabbit ileal loops. None were found positive for enterotoxigenicity in infant mouse model. According to the disc diffusion methods of testing, gentamycin, nalidixic acid and chloramphenicol were found to be most effective against Salmonella organism. Erythromycin and oxytetracycline were least effective.

Pneumonitis secondary to drug induced gastric perforation.

Chemical pneumonitis in a 3-year-old child due to drug-induced gastric perforation at fundus is reported. The child was managed by closure of perforation with omental patch, gastrostomy and conservative treatment.

Determination of thiabendazole residues in white and sweet potatoes by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection.

A liquid chromatographic (LC) method was developed for determination of thiabendazole (TBZ) residues in or on whole, unwashed white potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) and sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas). TBZ is extracted from the potato homogenate with ethyl acetate and the extract purified and concentrated on a cation-exchange, solid-phase extraction column. The extract is analyzed for TBZ residues by column LC with a cation-exchange column and fluorescence detection. Recoveries of TBZ from whole white potatoes fortified with TBZ at 0.05-20 ppm and from whole sweet potatoes fortified with TBZ at 0.005-0.1 ppm averaged 100 and 94%, respectively. The method is also applicable for quantitation of TBZ residues in white potato waste (dried peel) used as an animal feed additive. The present method for monitoring TBZ residues in white and sweet potatoes and white potato waste (dried peel) is simple, rapid, and sensitive.
