The influence of embryonal bursectomy on benzpyrene-induced sarcoma of the chicken.

160 chickens hormonally bursectomized before hatching, and 160 controls were twice given a dose of 10 mg 3,4-benzo(a)pyrene 2 weeks and 6 weeks after hatching. After 24 weeks the controls had developed muscle sarcomas at a significantly higher rate than the bursectomized animals (49.6--32.1%). The tumors were identified as malignant polymorphocellular rhabdomyosarcomas in light and electron microscopy. When the experiment was stopped after 27 weeks, the controls showed more tumors than the bursectomized chickens (65.1% versus 58.9%). The effect of bursectomy lies in a prolongation fo tumor latency. The frequency of metastases is equally decreased to a significant degree (41.7% versus 21.7%). These results are interpreted as an illustration of the disturbed equilibrium between the T and B cell responses.

Bursa-independent plasma cells in the Harderian gland of the chicken (Gallus domesticus). Histomorphometrical investigations.

Morphometric investigations of the Harderian gland in normal and bursectomized chickens at the 16th, 30th, and 60th day after hatching, show a significcant suppressive effect of bursectomy on the volume of the plasma cell compartment in this organ. However, the suppression of the plasma cell population in the Harderian gland is not complete. The plasma cells remaining in the Harderian gland after bursectomy are probably components of a bursa-independent B cell population.

[Results of radiation therapy in Brill-Symmers' disease with special consideration to histological grading (author's transl)].

Histological preparations from 22 irradiated patients with gigantofollicular lymphoblastoma Brill-Symmers have been reviewed and graded in accordance with the Kiel classification 1974. Corresponding to this, 19 patients had centroblastic-centrocytic lymphoma and three a centroblastic sarcoma. In the three sub-groups of centroblastic-centrocylic lymphomas, no essential differences were found in stages I-III with respect to anamnesis or clinical findings before the onset of treatment, or to the previous course of the disease. Centroblastic sarcoma, ranging among the lymphomas with a high degree of malignancy, has manifested unfavorable progressive courses in all patients.

[Gastrointestinal sarcomas].

In 45 primary sarcomas of the gastrointestinal tract the authors attempt to derive criteria for prognosis from histology and localization of the tumors and from clinical parameters. Their observations lead to the conclusion that 1) proximal sarcomas of the gastrointestinal tract have a better prognosis than distal sarcomas, 2) lymphocytic malignant lymphomas has a better prognosis than other histologic types, and 3) there is a correlation between blood sedimentation rate and prognosis.
