[Surgical reduction of the kidney for inducing chronic kidney insufficiency].

By operative reduction of the renal tissue on 1/5 of both kidneys there are to be produced a chronic renal insufficiency in 21 black mini-pigs. The operative procedure was carried out at one time (nephrectomy and resection of the residual kidney) or at two times (in one group of it at first the nephrectomy and in the other group at first the resection of the kidney). Only 50% of the animals died with the symptom uremia in renal insufficiency. The nephrectomy--with a temporarily shifted resection of the residual kidney--effects the desired changes most approximately with very different reaction. This procedure appears as an animal model for the chronic renal insufficiency altogether not suitable.

[Electrophoresis studies of the pre-natal status of serum lipoproteins of various species].

The relative proportions of alpha-, beta-, and pre-beta-lipoproteins in the fetal serum of mouse, rat, rabbit, guinea pig, mini-pig, and man were determined by agarose gel electrophoresis and subsequent scan evaluation. No distinct species-independent, fetal-specific common features could be detected. In mouse, rabbit and rat an increase in alpha-lipoproteins and a decrease of the proportion of beta-lipoproteins can be observed during prenatal development. In human cord serum of the 30th week alpha-LP are prevalent; at delivery their proportion is still 50%, like in the serum of adults. Five of the species investigated reveal low, if any, pre-beta-lipoprotein levels in fetal serum, while those in the adult organism amount to 19-33%. The lipoprotein spectrum of the mini-pig at the end of the gestational period is identical with that of the adult animal. In the serum of the fetal and adult guinea pig no alpha-lipoprotein band is detectable. On the other hand, a pre-albumin fraction appeared in the prenatal period, amounting to 25% of total lipoproteins. In total, the findings reported here reflect a largely species-specific development of the fetal lipoprotein patterns.

[Myelin basic protein in cerebrospinal fluid in neurosyphilis (author's transl)].

Myelin basic protein (MBP) was demonstrated in the CSF of 15 out of 41 patients with assumed or ascertained neurosyphilis using a radio-immunoassay. In parenchymatous syphilis (progressive paralysis, tabes dorsalis) more than 50% of patients had MBP-positive CSF independent of immunological findings and previous treatment. CSF of patients with meningovascular neurosyphilis was mostly negative, only in 2 cases with acute symptoms was MBP demonstrable. In one of these patients MBP was no longer demonstrable in the CSF 6 months after treatment. The frequent occurrence of MBP in CSF in parenchymatous neurosyphilis can be taken as evidence of persistence of demyelinising activity even in cases where immunological finding point to "syphilis satis curata" (sufficiently treated syphilis).

[Acute renal failure in alcoholic myopathy (author's transl)].

Two chronic alcoholics developed acute renal failure from alcoholic myopathy (acute alcohol-induced rhabdomyolysis). Severe muscle pain developed and was associated with transitory oligo-anuric renal failure, requiring dialysis in one patient. In addition to the typical history and clinical symptoms, excessive elevation of muscle enzymes, especially creatine-kinase, and the appearance of myoglobin in serum are characteristic. Brown discoloration of the urine and a falsely positive test for "blood" due to the presence of myoglobin in urine in the absence of red blood cells are also typical. Definite changes can be demonstrated histologically and electromyographically during the acute stage. It is likely that this condition is more frequent than the sparsity of published reports indicates.

[Pathomorphological changes in the skeletal muscles (musculus longissimus dorsi) in swine following varied transport stresses and resting periods prior to slaughter].

The M. longissimus dorsi of 171 pigs were histologically examined for pathological signs. Acute hyaline-plaque degenerations and necrosis (hsD/N) in various degrees of manifestation were recorded from 42.7 and hyaline transverse ligaments (hQb) from 22.8 per cent of all cases. The occurrence of hsD/N following container transport was lower with significance (33.3 per cent) than that following lorry transport (50.5 per cent). The form of transport failed to have any substantive effect on the occurrence of hQb, the figures being 20.5 per cent for container and 24.7 per cent for lorry. Short resting periods, between 0.5 and 1.2 hours, were followed with significantly higher occurrence of hsD/N, as compared to longer resting periods, between five and eight or 23 hours. These pathological findings were not further reduced by extending the resting period from something between five and eight to 20 hours. The pathological hsD/N and hQb findings were recordable from both PSE pork (hsD/N = 51.4 per cent, hQb = 25.7 per cent) and from pork without any quality shortcomings (hsD/N = 39.7 per cent, hQb = 22.1 per cent), but the number of hsD/N cases in the context of PSE pork tended to be higher than that in high-quality pork. No sex dependence was established. The results are discussed under the aspect of aetiopathogenesis of stress-borne myopathy.

[Meat quality in swine. 5. Relationships between blood parameters and meat quality].

The responses of haemoglobin, haematocrit, glucose, and lactate to natural strain and their relationships to pork quality were studied in several experiments with 155 animals. Stress associated with blood-taking following snout-loop fixation, evacuation, transport, and stunning led to excessive excitation which, in turn, caused deflection of the above parameters. Their correlations with criteria of pork quality are unimportant. Assessment of individual strainability of the neuromuscular system on the basis of the above stresses and blood parameters, therefore, does not seem to be promising at all. This result has been confirmed by repeated testing of the above criteria between evacuation and bleeding. The animals tested responded quite variably. Their pork qualities were both "normal" and "impaired".
