Sixty-three cases of an aneurysm at the internal carotid-posterior communicating artery junction with aneurysm-induced unilateral eye-lid ptosis, a symptom of the third nerve palsy, were described. 1) The incidence of this palsy in 189 cases of the aneurysm was thirty-three percent. 2) The palsy before the aneurysm rupture was recognized in three cases (5 percent). The onset of this palsy following an aneurysm rupture was most frequent in the first day and in almost half of the patients within two days, but in four cases the palsy appeared three or four weeks after the aneurysm rupture. 3) The size and direction of the growth of the aneurysms in carotid angiograms were compared between palsy and non-palsy groups and there were no significant differences between them. 4) Thirty-one patients who had had a palsy before direct aneurysm surgery were followed one to ten years post-operatively. In twenty-three (74 percent), the unilateral eye-lid ptosis was recovered by the follow-up. In eleven of the twelve cases operated within two weeks after the onset, the palsy was recovered. On the other hand, in seven of eight not-recovered cases there was a delay of more than two weeks before operation.

Cells of Arthrobacter sp. that had been isolated from soil were used to study oxidation of some linear terpenes and squalene variants. The cells oxidized geraniol, nerol, and farnesol to the corresponding aldehydes, with partial conversion of the geometrical isomerism of the alpha,beta-double bond. The squalene variant, squalene-2,3-oxide, was cleaved to 9,10-epoxygeranylacetone and geranylacetone. Squalene-2,3-22,23-dioxide was cleaved to 9,10-epoxygeranylacetone. These products were optically active, and their stereochemistry and optical purity were determined.
This study was designed to examine whether 8S protein as progesterone receptor exists in the human endometrium which has been primed with estrogen. The kinetic study showed that 8S-progesterone binding was specific with Kd of 2.0 X 10(-9) M. 5S-progesterone binding was inhibited competitively by cortisol. The study of ligand specificity also showed that progesterone and its related steroids had much stronger affinity for 8S component than for 5S component. Therefore, 5S protein may be CBG. Progesterone-8S protein binding was easily dissociated during the 5-20% sucrose gradient centrifugation, but such a protein from which progesterone had been dissociated could be sedimented at 8S region. Glycerol could stabilize progesterone-8S protein binding. These results indicate the existence of 8S protein as a progesterone receptor under the low salt medium in the estrogen primed human endometrium.
