We studied the effect of Cepharanthin on bone marrow suppression induced by adjuvant chemotherapy in primary breast cancer patients in our hospital. The 36 patients with breast cancer were divided into two groups. Both groups were administered of MMC 20 mg intravenously on the day of radical operation. One group (23 patients) was administered of Cepharanthin 60 mg every day, but the other (13 patients) group was not administered. In the leukocyte count at 3 weeks after post operation, 82.6% (19 out of 23) of the patients who were administered cepharanthin kept more than 70% of pre-operation's leukocyte. On the other hand, only 46.1% (6 out of 13) of the patients who were not administered Cepharanthin kept more than 70% of pre-operation's leukocyte. The number of thrombocyte was not decreased in both groups. Side effects by Cepharanthin were not observed in this study.
Corticosteroids were administered to produce Pneumocystis carinii infection in cats. Six of 10 cats, injected intramuscularly for 97-141 days with 2 mg/cat twice weekly of betamethasone sodium phosphate, developed a light infection with P. carinii. Six of 7 cats, injected intramuscularly for 11-168 days with 10-25 mg/cat weekly of prednisolone acetate, also developed a light infection with P. carinii. There was no significant difference in the infection rate between the sexes and ages of the cats. Using Giemsa staining and Gomori's methenamine silver nitrate stain, P. carinii organisms were indistinguishable morphologically from human and rat P. carinii. The cysts and trophozoites were usually present singly or in small groups, and they always were adhering to the periphery of alveoli. The inflammatory changes were inconspicuous except for the fact that alveolar macrophages often were seen. Corticosteroid-treated cats should be useful in the study of experimental P. carinii infection. This is the first reported case of experimentally induced P. carinii infection in cats.

Streptomyces cinnamonensis produces the polyether ionophore antibiotic monensin A. Following a single round of mutagenesis by UV light, a derivative of this strain has been isolated, which secretes a new metabolite identified as 26-deoxymonensin A (3). The structural elucidation of the new metabolite followed from a spectroscopic analysis, and its identity was proven conclusively following a comparison to 26-deoxymonensin A (3) obtained synthetically from monensin A. The preparation of labelled forms of 3 is described, together with incorporation experiments using the parent strain of S. cinnamonensis. Only very low levels of incorporation of 3 into monensin A were observed.
The superior cervical ganglion (SCG) was reinnervated by vagal afferent fibers by cross anastomosis between the cranial end of nodose ganglion and the caudal end of SCG in cats. Formation of functional synapses was evidenced by unilateral mydriasis and contraction of the nictitating membrane in response to inflation of the stomach with a balloon or to electrical stimulation of the afferent vagus. The acetylcholine (ACh) content in the cross-anastomosed SCG (reinnervated by vagal afferent fibers) was measured. In anastomosed SCG, the ACh content was about half of normal SCG, but significantly higher than chronically decentralized SCG. Also the ACh content in nodose ganglion (NDG) was investigated in situations in which there was anastomosis, chronic supra, infra, or supra-/infranodose vagotomy. The ACh content of anastomosed NDG was near that of supranosdose vagotomized ganglion. The ACh content of supra-/infranodose vagotomized NDG, which can be considered the NDG itself, was as much as that of normal intact NDG. It was found that the ACh content of infranodose vagotomized NDG was increased, possibly the result of vagal efferent axonal flow or transport. The ACh content of vagal trunk with or without infranodose vagotomy was also measured. The ACh content of vagal trunk with infranodose vagotomy was smaller than that of the normal trunk, but there was still a considerable quantity of ACh. There was no significant change in wet weight of the SCG and NDG before or after the operations. From these results we have concluded that the transmission of the cross-anastomosed SCG (reinnervated with vagal afferent nerve) was cholinergic; and that the vagal afferent nerve have afferent cell bodies not only in NDG but also in peripheral vagal trunks (infranodose portion). These results strongly suggest that vagal afferent fibers are in part cholinergic.
1. The possible involvement of gamma-aminobutyric acidA (GABAA)- and GABAB-receptors in the inhibitory effects of GABA on the delayed increase in intragastric pressure of the stomach to stimulation of vagal afferent fibres in cats was studied. 2. Cats were anaesthetized with pentobarbitone-gallamine and pretreated with hexamethonium. GABA inhibited the hexamethonium-resistant delayed contraction of the stomach in a dose-dependent manner. Such effects of GABA were antagonized by both bicuculline and picrotoxin. 3. Muscimol, a GABAA-receptor agonist, mimicked the inhibitory effects of GABA and the effects of muscimol were antagonized by bicuculline and picrotoxin. The ID50 of muscimol was 10 times less than that of GABA. 4. In contrast to muscimol, baclofen, a GABAB-receptor agonist did not mimic the inhibitory effects of GABA. 5. The present experiments demonstrate that GABAA-receptors are involved in the inhibitory action of GABA on the delayed contraction of the stomach to vagal afferent stimulation.

Stability of bovine leukemia virus glycoprotein 51 and nonglycosylated protein 24 antigens was examined under various conditions. The glycoprotein antigen was unstable at 56 degrees C and 37 degrees C and at acidic and basic pH. The specificity of the glycoprotein 51 antigen was reduced to half by the first treatment with ethyl ether, but was not decreased further by repeated treatments. This antigen was not inactivated with triton X-100 and was resistant to lyophilization as well as to freezing and thawing. The protein 24 antigen was generally very stable under all conditions tested.

An autopsy case of a 51-year-old housewife with dominantly inherited ataxia is reported. Pathologic examination revealed an unusual combination of systemic degenerations: spinocerebellar tracts, pontine basis and middle cerebellar peduncles, dentato-rubral and nigro-subthalamo-pallidal systems, upper and lower motor neurons, ascending sensory system, and optic tracts. The inferior olive and cerebellar cortex showed only a slight change. The combination of the dentato-rubral with nigro-subthalamo-pallidal degenerations in a case with cerebellipetal systemic degeneration was particularly striking. Furthermore, combined degeneration of the ocular motor nuclei, vestibular nuclear group, perihypoglossal nuclei, fastigial nucleus, medial longitudinal fasciculus, and vestibulospinal tracts occurred. According to recent experimental results, these lesions were restricted precisely to the anatomophysiologically interrelated system for the control of eye movement. The present case is considered an example of systemic degeneration as a pathologic basis for ophthalmoplegia.
Water intake (drinking water and water from food) and urinary output in rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and cynomolgus monkey (M. fascicularis) watered ad libitum in individual cage were examined with 52 animals. The animal room was maintained at 25 +/- 2 degrees C and 55 +/- 10% with relative humidity, being lit at 12 hours interval. Water intake was found in wide variation between individuals, and about 20% of the monkeys were recognized as polydipsia without another abnormal behavior. No significant variation was found between daily water intake, but periodical (or seasonal) variation was observed in polydipsic monkey. Urinary output changed accordingly with water intake. Rate of the urinary output to the water intake was 76% in male rhesus, 59% in male cynomolgus and 49% in female cynomolgus. The rate was higher in the polydipsia than in the normal monkey. Diurnal patterns of water drinking and urinary output indicated that the monkeys were mostly active during the hours of lighting. Some effects of experimental procedure were observed on drinking and voiding in cynomolgus monkeys while no effect on rhesus monkeys. Prandial drinking was observed in monkeys as was reported on other laboratory animals such as rats.
A survey was made on the incidence of coccidial oocysts in 11,365 fecal samples from Japanese broiler houses during five years from 1973 to 1977. The Eimerian species were identified by a combination of two methods, examination of oocyst morphology and chicken passage test. Oocysts were detected from 7,526 (66.2%) of the samples tested during five years. Annual variation was statistically significant at the 5% level. Coccidial incidence during July to September (corresponding to summer season) was found to be higher than that of other seasons. With regard to regional variation, incidence found in the north-eastern half of Japan was lower than that in the south-western half. Oocyst detection rate increased up to 40 days of age in chickens and kept plateau thereafter. Eimeria acervulina predominated throughout the years, seasons, regions and age of chickens. Other species of Eimeria were subjected to wide fluctuation while the survey was carried out.

Clearance of sulfamethoxazole (SMX, or sulfisomezole) in eggs and tissues of chicken after withdrawal of the drug which was medicated feed additively (at 0.2 or 0.4%) or administered intramuscularly (100 mg./kg., twice daily) for 5 successive days was determined using a fluorescamine reagent. Clearance patterns of SMX were found to be different between albumen and yolk. SMX level in albumen diminished linearly to below 0.1 p.p.m. (sensitivity level) by 5 days after the cessation of medication. On the other hand, SMX level in yolk remained at a plateau until 4 days, and thereafter decreased linearly to below 0.1 p.p.m. by 10 days. SMX levels in most tissues diminished below 0.1 p.p.m. by 3 days and those in kidney and skin by 4 days. Clearance patterns in tissue were quite similar to those in egg albumen. Proportion of acetylated-SMX to total-one in both albumen and yolk tended to increase up to 10% with the lapse of time after drug withdrawal. Acetylation was high in liver (36.5-43.6%), spleen skin and fat, but low in breast muscle and kidney (3.7-11%) in the groups of feed addition; while acetylation was low in liver of the group of intramuscular injection.
