[Pathologic response of the weak damaged retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)--affected by sodium iodate (NaIO3)].

We examined the cellular responses of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) damaged by sodium iodate. RPE was damaged by intravenous administration of sodium iodate, 10mg per kg body weight, in rats. This dose of the agent damaged RPE weakly. Twenty-four hours after the administration of sodium iodate, polystyrene particles were injected into the subretinal space trans-sclerally. Rats were sacrificed at 6 hours to 4 days after injection of particles. Twenty four hours after injection of sodium iodate, RPE were weakly damaged. The cell organelles were swollen and ruptured, but cell structures were not destroyed. Then particles were injected into the subretinal space, RPE did not phagocytize the particles until 24 hours after the injection of particles. After 48 hours, RPE showed proliferation. After 4 days, RPE formed thick multilayers in the subretinal space and transformed to spindle shapes, and RPE underwent metaplasia to fibroblast-like cells. However proliferation of RPE was not marked. RPE cells weakly damaged by sodium iodate showed delay in phagocytosis of the particles and decrease in proliferation and metaplasia to fibroblast-like cells.

[Pathologic response of the regenerated retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)--affected by sodium iodate (NaIO3)].

Phagocytosis, proliferation and metaplasia to fibroblast-like cells in the regenerated retinal pigment epithelial cell (RPE) were examined after damage caused by administration of sodium iodate. The solution of sodium iodate (40 mg/kg) was given in a single intravenous injection in rats. Three days after injection, RPE showed marked necrotic damage, but in 2 weeks flat regenerated RPE with short microvilli and no basal infolding were seen on Bruch's membrane. Polystyrene particles were then injected into the subretinal space. The rats were sacrificed 6 hours to 4 days after injection of the particles. The regenerated RPE showed phagocytosis within 6 hours. After 48 hours, they showed multilayer proliferation. After 4 days RPE transformed to spindle-shaped fibroblast-like cells. However proliferation and metaplasia of RPE markedly decreased. The results showed significant decrease in the function of regenerated RPE-cells as a result of their damage.

Cerebrovascular disorders associated with von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis: a case report.

A 28-year-old woman with von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis (NF-1) had a huge hematoma in the left posterior nuchal region. Carotid and vertebral angiograms revealed marked stenosis at the C3 portion of the left internal carotid artery, slight moyamoya staining, occlusion of the left vertebral artery at the atlas level, and a right internal carotid artery aneurysm. The radiographic, clinical, and histological features of this case are discussed together with a review of 42 similar cases found in the literature.

BMY-28190, a novel antiviral antibiotic complex.

BMY-28190, an antibiotic complex active against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) was produced by the cultured broth of Streptoalloteichus hindustanus sp. nov., a producing strain of tallysomycins A and B. The antibiotic complex was recovered from the broth with Amberlite IRC-50 resin and separated from the coproduced tallysomycins and nebramycins by a series of chromatographies. BMY-28190 exhibited weak inhibitory activity toward Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and strong inhibitory activity toward HSV-1. Structural studies disclosed that BMY-28190 is a novel complex of gamma-poly-D-alpha, gamma-diaminobutyric acids with an average MW of 5,130.

[Optic glioma in neonates--report of two cases].

We report two cases of optic glioma in neonates, which is rare and only 3 similar cases can be found in the literature so far. Case #1 was a 55-day-old boy having been lethargic since around his 25th postnatal day. Case #2 was a 100-day-old girl having also been in the same condition as Case #1 since around her 50th postnatal day. The tumor in either patients seemed to have originated from chiasm or its vicinity and were too large to remove totally. Histopathological diagnosis of the tumor was fibrillary astrocytoma grade II in Case #1, and was anaplastic astrocytoma grade III in Case #2, both of which are different from the most popular pilocytic astrocytoma in so called infantile optic glioma. Now, 5 months and 4 years respectively after the operation, mental and somatical developmental retardations are already seen in either patients. Their functional prognosis seems to be poor.

Congenital absence of lacrimal puncta and of all major salivary glands: case report and literature review.

A 7-year-old girl had dry mouth and recurrent infections of the lacrimal fistulae with decreased lacrimal secretion. All four puncta were absent, and a Schirmer test showed decreased lacrimal secretion. Salivary gland imaging with sodium pertechnetate 99mTcO4 showed absence of all major salivary glands. Lower lip biopsy disclosed normal structure of the salivary gland. No evidence of abnormal inheritance patterns could be demonstrated.

An angiographic study of incidence and morphology of infundibular dilation of the posterior communicating artery.

In the last 9 years, infundibular dilatation (ID) has been sought in 260 aneurysm (An) cases and 398 carotid angiogram's (CAG) to reveal its incidence and morphology. Findings were as follows: The incidence was about double that so far published. Small ID, usually triangular in shape, tended to become round as it grew larger (P less than 0.01). Large ID favored young age (P less than 0.05). In internal carotid-posterior communicating aneurysm (IC-P com An) cases, a high incidence of ID was noted as compared to other An cases (P less than 0.05), and intermediate or large, round ID accounted for high ratios. Cases with a history of hypertension showed a high large ID ratio (P less than 0.05). Cases with well developed P com A had a high ratio of large, round ID (P less than 0.01). In cases with a large divergent angle of ICA and P com A, intermediate or large, round ID was found in high ratio (P less than 0.05). Aggressive follow-up or treatment was thought necessary in cases which possess the factors mentioned.
