Does the cancer accompanying acanthosis nigricans contain endocrine cells of the APUD series?

Following the publication of Hage & Hage, who believe that gastric cancers accompanying malignant acanthosis nigricans might constitute a specific group of carcinomas in which cells from parts of the tumor arise from the APUD-series of endocrine cells, carcinomas of 2 patients with malignant acanthosis nigricans were subjected to investigation. There were no APUD-cells in the adenocarcinomas studied but they were present in the overlying mucosa. It is known, moreover, that internal carcinomas not accompanying malignant acanthosis nigricans may contain APUD cells.

The genetics of follicular atrophoderma.

Follicular atrophoderma apparently does not occur alone but is associated with other abnormalities. It is present in three groups: (1) If it is associated with chondrodystrophia calcificans congenita, it occurs only in girls and is due either to an X-chromosomal gene causing the changes in the heterozygote (ie, in the female sex) and penatal death in the hemizygous state (ie, in the male sex), or to an autosomal dominant gene with expression almost wholly limited to the female sex; (2) If it is associated with Bazex's syndrome, it occurs in male and female persons in successive generations and is due either to an autosomal dominant gene or to an X-linked dominant gene; and (3) If it occurs in association with keratosis palmoplantaris dissipata, keratosis follicularis, and hyperhidrosis palmoplantaris, it may be due to a recessive gene or a mutation.

Unilateral epidermal naevus resembling acanthosis nigricans.

A man born with a unilateral epidermal naevus on the right side of the abdomen developed at puberty symmetrical benign acanthosis nigricans in the body folds. The symmetrical eruption later disappeared completely. The unilateral epidermal naevus and the symmetrical eruption showed identical histological features, i.e. those of acanthosis nigricans. At the age of 32 he developed a muco-epidermoid cancer of the left parotid gland. A decision whether the association of unilateral epidermal naevi with malignant tumours occurs with unusual frequency requires (a) a long follow-up of the patient with the unilateral naevus, (b) a differentiation of the unilateral eruption from unilateral malignant acanthosis nigricans and (c) statistical evidence.

Acanthosis nigricans.

Four types of acanthosis nigricans (a.n.) must be distinguished: "benign" a.n., pseudo a.n., a.n. as part of a syndrome and malignant a.n. These different types affect different age groups, follow different courses, are associated with different conditions, are or are not reversible, have or do not have a genetic basis and also show great differences in regard to their significance for the patient's life or well-being.
