[The behavior of trypsin-like proteases in sulcus fluid].

The present study shows results aimed at determining whether levels of a trypsin-like protease in gingival crevicular fluid are associated with disease activity as assessed by the level of gingival inflammation and probing attachment loss. Maximum enzyme level was significantly elevated by groups with gingival inflammation and periodontal destruction. In a long-time study we find a decrease of enzyme activity with clinical therapy by scaling and root planning.

[Toxicological assessment of amalgam components released in immersion tests].

After immersion of unpolished and polished high copper amalgam in saliva with different pH values for up to 12 weeks, the elements mercury, tin, copper, silver and antimony were analysed in the solution. Unpolished amalgam corroded more than polished amalgam. Corrosion increased with the time of immersion and the acidity of the solution. The values calculated to a maximum of clinical application not imply any toxicologic risk.

[The effect of zinc chloride mouthwashes on caries-inducing plaque streptococci. 1. In vitro research on the antimicrobial efficacy of zinc chloride on reference strains of Streptococcus mutans (BHT), Streptococcus sanguis (HKop) and Streptococcus salivarius (NCTN 8618)].

The antimicrobial efficiency of zinc chloride solution in concentration from 0.1% to 2.0% and 0.2% chlorhexidine solution has been examined on the strains of reference in a comparative study. Three test methods were applied: the agar diffusion test, the dilution test and the suspension test. As was to be expected the antibacterial effect of the zinc chloride solution was dependent on concentration. Between 0.1% and 2.0% the zinc chloride solution showed a bacteriostatic effect on the strains of reference only; the application of higher concentrated solutions is not indicated intraorally. 0.2% chlorhexidine solution showed a bactericidal effect on the test germs.

[The zinc concentration in the dental plaque after zinc chloride mouth rinsing in relation to previous mouth rinsings with different pH values].

The zinc content in dental plaque after mouth rinsing with 0.2% zinc chloride solution is dependent on previous mouth rinsing with different pH value. Zinc retention is strongly reduced by rinsing with citric acid solution (pH value 1.0). Zinc retention is growing with increasing pH value when rinsing was made with sodium citrate buffer solution with increasing pH value. A rinsing with sodium citrate buffer solution (pH value 6.3) following a 0.2% zinc chloride solution leads to a drastic reduction of the zinc content. However, a chlorhexidine solution with the same pH value leaves no washing out effect.

[The effect of zinc chloride mouthwashes on caries-inducing plaque streptococci. 3. The antibacterial effect of zinc chloride on the species Str. mutans, Str. sanguis and Str. salivarius in dental plaque].

The quantitative behaviour of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis and Streptococcus salivarius has been examined in initial findings and after application of 0.4% zinc chloride solution. After a 7 day rinsing the number of colony developing units of the species Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis in the plaque decreased to about 30% of the determined initial values. The proportions of the species Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis in the total streptococcus flora of the dental plaque were not changed by zinc chloride solution. The percentage of the Streptococcus salivarius increased significantly from 1% to 4% of the total number of streptococci.

[The effect of zinc chloride mouthwashes on caries-inducing plaque streptococci. 2. In vivo studies of the antibacterial effect of zinc chloride on the total streptococcal flora of the dental plaque].

During a 14-day test period a 0.2% and a 0.4% zinc chloride solution have been examined concerning their antibacterial efficiency on the total streptococcus flora of dental plaque under conditions conforming to standard by means of the Mylar foil technique. The results of the microbiological examination show a significant decrease of colony developing units of the plaque streptococci by a 7-day mouth rinsing with zinc chloride solution. The lesser antimicrobial effect of the zinc chloride solution compared with a 0.2% chlorhexidine solution is not proved statistically in the test period. A 0.2% or 0.4% zinc chloride solution could complete the mechanical dental and oral hygiene in an effective way.

[The materials and border-zone micromorphology of a glass-ionomer cement cavity lining material].

The combination of various possibilities for sample preparation and investigation--the tinting penetration method, the ion beam slope cutting, the light and scanning electron microscopy--allow statements at the grind after different drying of the preparation mainly to the bond but also surface and filler shape of glass-ionomer cements. The dentine in the area of enamel-dentine-junction and of superficial root area is effectively closed by Ketac-Bond. Likewise, the bond with cover filling (Visio-Molar) can be considered without gaps except a single case. Crack propagations from the cement surface seem to related to pores and occur independently of type of drying especially in case of mechanical after treatment of already hardened cavity lining [correction of underfilling] material.

[Clinical evaluation of the amalagam restorations for cavities Class I and Class II. 3: Comparison between dental school and dental institutions in the community].

Comparison of conventional amalgam restorations produced either in dental college by students or in out-patient department showed that the portion of clinical acceptable restorations was higher at the college. The frequency of secondary caries was distinctively higher in the out-patient department (28.2%) than in the college (16.4%). Secondary caries mainly caused unacceptable quality of fillings of both the institutions. Causes brought about by material defect prevailed at the dental school. In the community errors of preparation mainly led to secondary caries.

[Representative epidemiologic study of influence factors on the periodontal loss of attachment].

The influence of age, inflammation intensity, tooth surface quality (caries, fillings), as well as mucogingival conditions on the loss of attachment was examined in 2000 probands. The loss of attachment was subdivided into periodontal pocket-formation and recessions. Determining cause is not the age but the inflammatory degree even if there is a significant increase of the attachment loss from age group to age group. The main part of the attachment loss increasing with advancing age is caused by recession development. Then, the individual dispersion is very high. Incorrect restorations, caries but also correct fillings increase periodontal disease. Mucogingival conditions show importance only in extreme case. There are less inflammations with pocket-formation than recessions. A preventive oriented basic care of the population is necessary to reduce irreversible damages of the periodontium.

[The concentration and duration of the action of metronidazole in the gingival pocket following local application].

Periodontitis is a locally limited disease caused by bacteria. The local application presents itself useful for the indicated medicamentous therapy of periodontitis by means of metronidazole. In preliminary tests the metronidazole liberation from hollow fibres, in gel and from polyvinyl alcohol platelets has been tested by ultraviolet absorption measurement. The hollow fibres have been evaluated no more because of too small agent absorption in the clinical test. In polyvinyl alcohol metronidazole acts definitely over 3 days. However, the prolonged action in the gel form is not definitely (45 min to 24 h). A single one or repeated twice metronidazole/polyvinyl alcohol platelet application results in a sufficient long and high metronidazole concentration in the gingival pocket.

[The corrosion behavior of antimony in a Ag-Sn-Cu-Sb amalgam].

Specimen of amalgam containing antimony were stored in solutions with different pH and different content of rhodanide until 21 days. The most antimony were solved within 24 hours. After 7 days an increase of the antimony concentration were not observed in physiological pH. An inhibition of corrosion by rhodanide existed only after incubation from 21 days. The quantity of antimony (10-21 micrograms) were analysed by mean of atomic absorption spectroscopy. It represent not a risk for the health. The natural presence of this element in environment and in human body is discussed to the analysed quantity of solved antimony.

[The effectiveness of zinc chloride mouthwashes on leukocyte activity in sulcus fluid and on the clinical parameters in experimentally induced gingivitis].

The influence of 0.5% zinc chloride mouth rinsings on the number and vitality of polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leucocytes in the sulcus fluid has been examined in comparison with selected clinical indices in 6 healthy probands during a 10 day plaque accumulation phase. The development of an experimental gingivitis could be suppressed significantly by the drug. The evidence has been the course of clinical inflammation parameter and the leucocytes activity. Only a slight inhibition of plaque formation could be identified in the first days of the study.

[The effect of age on the periodontal status of the golden Syrian hamster (morphologic research)].

In 10 male Syrian golden hamsters at the age of 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 months each the two first lower molars have been evaluated histomorphologically to get an exact statement about the spontaneous illness rate of our used animals. In this connection efforts were made to classify the histopathological lesions into initial, early, established and advanced lesions in accordance with Page and Schroeder (1976). Altogether occurred 4 initial, 64 early and 32 established lesions in 100 examined golden hamster molars. In no case advanced lesions have been stated. Referring to the various age groups a regular periodontal progression was not detectable. Histologically healthy marginal periodontium could not been found in the conventional Syrian golden hamster. Similar examinations have this to consider.

[Polarization microscopic studies of the dental enamel margin diagonal following the use of various preparation instruments and an etching gel].

The composite enamel bond considerably depends on mechanical produced surface beside the chemical conditioning. Polarization microscopic investigations at thin planes let recognize different profiles of surfaces, variations of medium etching depths and variable frequencies of enamel fractures in the area of enamel margin bevel after application of a preparing diamond cutter, a finishing diamond cutter, a wound geared tungsten carbide finisher and the combination of a preparing diamond cutter with a tungsten carbide finisher on the same conditioning with an etching gel of 37% phosphoric acid. The only application of a wound geared tungsten carbide finisher is not indicated if the enamel etch technique is used. There the combination of a preparing diamond cutter with a tungsten carbide finisher proved a success both relating to profiles of enamel bevel after acid etching, small disturbed enamel structure and as to clinical handling.

[Clinical evaluation of amalgam restorations for Class I cavities and Class II. Part II: Cause analysis of unacceptable restorations].

627 not acceptable amalgam restorations using conventional alloy were investigated. Main failure was the secondary caries (60%) which was caused more by failures of preparations than by failures of material. New caries led to replacement of fillings in 16%. Fractures of restorations (13%) and unacceptable forms of fillings (9%) had a relative important position. The clinicians can influence 75 percent of the causes. With regard to material improvement, the results are discussed to avoid failures in therapy.
