Innervation of trabecular meshwork.

The innervation of the trabecular meshwork of the anterior chamber angle in monkey eyes was studied by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. According to the transmission electron microscopic examination, the nerve terminals in the trabecular meshwork mostly contained dense core vesicles after treatment with 5-hydroxydopamine and thus were identified as the adrenergic nerve terminals. Regarding the mode of ending of the nerve terminals in the trabecular meshwork, it was divided into three types from the positional relationship of the nerve terminals with the endothelial cells in the trabecular meshwork. Type I nerve terminals are naked and they form synaptic contact with endothelial cells of the trabecular sheets of the uveal and corneoscleral meshwork. Type II nerve terminals are located in the trabecular sheets of the uveal and corneoscleral meshwork and in the endothelial meshwork, and partly surrounded by the Schwann cell processes. This type of nerve terminals end as free terminals without a constant relation to endothelial cells of the trabecular meshwork. Type III nerve terminals usually not surrounded by the Schwann cell processes are observed on the free surface of the endothelium of the trabecular sheets facing the aqueous humor. The incidence of these three types of nerve terminals was the highest in type II followed by type III. Type I nerve terminals were very rare. When the morphological characteristics of the trabecular meshwork are considered, the transmitter released from type II and type III nerve terminals enter the aqueous humor and perhaps affects the aqueous outflow area to control the intraocular pressure, as judged from the flow of aqueous humor.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Cell lineage analysis in ascidian embryos by intracellular injection of a tracer enzyme. II. The 16- and 32-cell stages.

Cell lineages during development of ascidian embryos were analyzed by injecting horseradish peroxidase as a tracer enzyme into identified cells of the 16-cell and 32-cell stage embryos of Halocynthia roretzi. Most of the blastomeres of these embryos developed more kinds of tissues than have hitherto been reported, and therefore, the developmental fates of each blastomere are more complex. It has been thought that every blastomere of the 64-cell stage ascidian embryo gives rise to only one kind of tissues, but the finding that the several blastomeres at the 32-cell stage developed into at least three different kinds of tissues, clearly indicates that the stage at which the fates of every blastomere are determined to one tissue is later than the 64-cell stage. The results also clearly demonstrate that muscle cells are derived not only from B-line cells (B5.1, B5.2, B6.3, and B6.4) but also from A-line cells (A5.2 and A6.4) and b-line cells (b5.3 and b6.5). Based on the present analysis as well as other studies, complete cell lineages of muscle cells up to their terminal differentiation have been proposed. In addition, lineages of nervous system, notochord, and epidermis are also discussed.

New fetal growth curves for Japanese.

New fetal growth curves for Japanese have been made with the cooperation of 37 major medical centers throughout Japan by the sponsorship of the Ministry of Health. They are reliable in regard to the adequacy of the sample number, the accuracy of the data on gestational age and the proper processes of composing growth curves. Effect of sex and parity are significant on weight but not on length and head circumference growth curves. The light-for-dates infant is defined as below mean -1.5 SD by the statistic analysis of their morbidity. These new official fetal growth curves will solve current confusion of several fetal growth curves from different institutions in Japan.

[Blood volume measurement of newborn using stable isotope 50Cr].

A technique for the blood volume measurement of newborns was established in which nonradioactive 50Cr was used in patients for whom radioactive labels were not advisable. The red blood cells (RBC) in the newborn's blood withdrawn from umbilical cord after birth were tagged with enriched stable isotope 50Cr (96%, normal abundance 4.3%) and reinjected into the newborn. Blood samples (0.5 ml) were withdrawn at 30 min and thereafter at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 120 hours old. Samples were centrifugalized and portion of RBC was then freeze-dried, weighed and sealed into polyethylene sheet bag together with 50Cr standard. Neutron irradiation was performed in the reactors of the JAERI with thermal neutron flux 5 X 10(13), 2 X 10(13), 8 X 10(13) cm-2s-1 at JRR-2, -3 and -4 respectively for 20 min and samples were left for about two weeks after irradiation. Induced radioactivity (51Cr, 59Fe) of the sample was measured with a Ge(Li) gamma-ray detector system and 4096 channels pulse height analyzer. Analysis of activity data was carried out by BOB-76 code. The RBC and total blood volume of the newborn was calculated using an isotopic dilution technique. We have investigated on tagging efficiency of 50Cr to RBC, washing effect and dilution rate by 50Cr content or 51Cr/59Fe ratio. Significant difference was observed in the total blood volume of newborns depending on the delivery style and in addition, it changed dynamically along the time elapsed after birth.

Structure of alahopcin (nourseimycin), a new dipeptide antibiotic.

The structure of alahopcin (nourseimycin) (1), a new dipeptide antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces, has been established to be (2S, 3R)-2-[(L-alanyl)amino]-4-formyl-3-(hydroxy-aminocarbonyl)butyric acid. 1 exists in two cyclic hemiacetal type tautomers formed by intramolecular ring closure between the hydroxyamino group and the formyl group in aqueous solution. The structure of the new weakly acidic amino acid (2), a constituent of 1, is revealed to be (2S, 3R)-2-amino-4-formyl-3-(hydroxyaminocarbonyl)butyric acid, and 2 also exists in two cyclic hemiacetal type tautomers in aqueous solution.
