Mouse embryos explanted at various stages during neurulation were cultured for 20-28 h in the presence of 25-900 micrograms/ml of 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR). BUdR strongly inhibited closure of the cranial neural tube, which was found to be stage-dependent. When mouse embryos were exposed to BUdR after development of the concave curvature in the neuroepithelium of the midbrain to the upper hindbrain regions, they became insensitive to the drug-induced open cranial neural tube. Histological observations showed that BUdR interfered with interkinetic migration and cytokinesis of the neuroepithelial cells. These cellular abnormalities were not dependent on the morphological development of the cranial neural folds. The 3H-BUdR experiment confirmed that the label was mostly incorporated into the DNA fraction.
Hemispheric asymmetry in language processing was investigated using an auditory evoked potential as the index for neurophysiological activity. Subjects were given the task of recognizing and classifying typical Japanese nouns, responding to nonsense syllables and responding to tone pips. Fourteen subjects participated and the AEPs of 12 subjects from the frontal, central and parietal regions were adopted for subsequent analyses. Correlation coefficients between the right/left AEPs from homologous scalp regions and a waveform similarity curve analysis that can indicate the similarity of two AEPs segmentally and successively, were adopted to provide the intra-individual symmetry index. Results were as follows: (1) The waveforms between the right/left AEPs induced by meaningful nouns were significantly dissimilar than those induced by nonsense syllables and tone pips; (2) the dissimilarities occurred mainly at 160 msec and 350 msec from the onset of the first syllable on the frontal and central regions. These findings may reflect the hemispheric asymmetry of neurophysiological activity in language processing.
Using scanning electron microscopy of celluloid impressions the feline penile spines in the adult and after castration were studied. A solution of celluloid in a mixture of amyl acetate was placed on the glans. The replica thus obtained was coated with gold in an ion-spatter coater, and observed under a scanning electron microscope (JSM-1). The structure of the penile spines and fine arrangement of superficial cells of the epidermis could be observed three-dimensionally. Since the penile spines are the only known external indicators of the level of male hormone in cats, and since their fine structure can be observed without excising the penile skin, this simple method can be applied for diagnosis of fertility of the male cat.

A spontaneous tumor was found in the left adrenal gland of a 35-day-old male Wistar rat. Histologically, the tumor consisted of various tissues derived from all three embryonic germ layers, i.e. the ectoderm (nervous tissue and skin), mesoderm (striated muscle, bone and cartilage), and endoderm (glandular tissue). The tumor also contained loosely or compactly arranged embryonic connective tissues. From these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as teratoma. This appears to be the first description of teratoma in the adrenal gland of the rat.

A simple spot test to measure galactose and galactose-1-phosphate in blood-impregnated filter paper was studied as a screening test for galactosemia in the newborn. A 3-mm disc punched from blood-impregnated filter paper card was fixed with acetone-methanol and incubated in a reaction mixture containing galactose dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase. This reaction mixture was then spotted on DEAE-cellulose paper, dried, and observed under a UV-lamp. The minimum amount of galactose detected by this procedure was 2 mg/dl. Estimation of galactose and galactose-1-phosphate with this procedure correlated well with estimation by bacterial assay.

In this study we investigated the effect of the electroconvulsive shock (ECS) soon after each amygdaloid stimulation (KS) upon the development of a kindling phenomenon. Thirty male Wistar albino rats were used in this study. Once daily stimulation of 200 microA, 1 msec, 60 Hz, 2 sec train by the right amygdaloid stimulation electrodes and the recording of the EEG were done. Rats of the Kindling + ECS group received the ECS through the clipped ears for five minutes after the KS. Behavioral manifestations, the duration of afterdischarge and the numbers of spikes were counted for five minutes at the time of every stimulation. The numbers of times the KS required to develop each stage were stage 1:4.8, stage 2:8, stage 3:8.6, stage 4:9.6, stage 5:12.6, respectively, on the kindling group. On the ECS-treated group, those were stage 1:8, stage 2:17, stage 3:18, stage 4: more than 20. The ECS soon after the amygdaloid stimulation retarded the process of kindling significantly. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that the electroconvulsive shocks disturb the information of the synaptic pathway before the consolidation of a central neuroplastic change underlying kindling.
