[Increase in the number of moves within the Netherlands continues in 1993].

"The number of persons moving home within the Netherlands increased from 1.570 million in 1992 to 1.629 million in 1993.... During 1993, 733 thousand persons changed address in family context, whereas 857 thousand persons moved individually.... For six provinces internal migration in 1993 resulted in net arrivals.... [Over 50,000 requests for asylum in 1994].

"According to data of the [Netherlands] Ministry of Justice the number of asylum requests amounted to 52.6 thousand in 1994, 17.2 thousand or almost 50% more than in 1993....A quarter of the total number of asylum seekers in 1994 had a nationality of one of the former Yugoslav republics, followed by persons from Iran (12%), Somalia (10%) and the former Soviet Union (9%).... In 1994 the number of expelled non-Dutch nationals amounted to 31.2 thousand, 11 thousand more than the 1993 level. From this group, 13.3 thousand persons were asylum seekers...." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[High number of removals within the Netherlands in 1994].

"The number of persons moving home within the Netherlands increased from 1.629 million in 1993 to 1.684 million in 1994. Compared with 1987, the highest point of the eighties, the 1994 level was 1% higher. During 1994, 788 thousand persons changed address in family context, whereas 896 thousand persons moved individually. The moving families counted on average 2.94 persons. For five provinces internal migration in the period 1990-1994 resulted in net arrivals of which Felvoland had the highest surplus (33.9 thousand). The other provinces showed net departures, [ranging] from 1,800 for Overjissel to 24,300 for Zuid Holland." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[More and more Dutch nationals to South Africa].

"From 1950-1994 almost 62 thousand Dutch nationals left for South Africa. Almost half of them left the Netherlands in the fifties. In the same period, more than 43 thousand Dutch nationals returned to the Netherlands. Fluctuations in external migration with South Africa can be related to political events there.... From the end of 1994, emigration of Dutch nationals to South Africa is now higher than immigration from that country." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[Twenty-six thousand asylum seekers in the first half of 1994].

"According to data of the [Netherlands] Ministry of Justice the number of asylum requests amounted to 26,000 in the first half year of 1994, almost twice as many as in the corresponding period of 1993. In the first half of 1994, most asylum seekers (almost 30%) had a nationality of one of the former Yugoslav republics, followed by persons from Somalia, Iran and the former Soviet Union." [The largest number of non-Dutch national immigrants in 1993 was born in one of the former Yugoslav republics].

The author reviews migration trends in the Netherlands since 1985. "In 1993 immigration amounted to 119 thousand, 2 thousand (i.e. 2.0%) more than the 1992 level.... According to [official] data...35 thousand non-Dutch nationals requested...asylum in 1993, 15 thousand more than in 1992. The (modest) increase in immigration was mainly caused by non-Dutch nationals born in one of the former Yugoslav republics and Somalia....The level of emigration amounted to 59 thousand, only a few hundred more than in 1992." [Increase in residential mobility in the Netherlands in 1992].

Data on residential mobility in the Netherlands for 1992 are analyzed and compared by region and family characteristics of movers. "During 1992, 742 thousand persons changed address in family context, whereas 828 thousand persons moved individually. The moving families counted on average 2.94 persons." (SUMMARY IN ENG)
