Respiration of the amphibious fishes Periophthalmus cantonensis and Boleophthalmus chinensis in water and on land.

1. The routine oxygen consumption by Periophthalmus cantonensis and Boleophthalmus chinensis in water increased geometrically, whereas that in air increased logarithmically with temperature. At temperatures of more than 20 degrees C the oxygen uptake of both species was greater in water than in air. 2. When the fishes were able freely to select either an aquatic or terrestrial habitat, the total oxygen consumption of Periophthalmus and Boleophthalmus was 236 and 110 ml/kg, h at 20 degrees C respectively; 66% (Periophthalmus) and 70% (Boleophthalmus) of the total uptake was from water, and 34 and 30% of the total uptake was from air at 20 +/- 1 degrees C. 3. Oxygen uptake of fish limited to aquatic or terrestial life was less than when they could freely select their habitat; for Periophthalmus, uptake was reduced to 83% when confined in water and to 50% in air, and for Bolephthalmus, to 65% in water and to 43% in air. 4. The proportion of oxygen uptake by the gill in water was 52% for Periophthalmus and 59% for Boleophthalmus; in air the corresponding figures were 27 and 52%. 5. The proportions of oxygen uptake via the skin in water was 48% for Periophthalmus and 36% for Boleophthalmus; in air the corresponding figures were 76 and 43%. 6. It is concluded that, on land, Periophthalmus relies mainly on its skin and Boleophthalmus relies mainly on its gills.

Secretion of gastrin and calcitonin after ingestion of meat extract in patients with peptic ulcer.

Serum gastrin and calcitonin were determined after administration of meat extract to patients with peptic ulcer in order to investigate what role gastrin and calcitionin are playing in peptic ulcer. Serum gastrin levels were elevated after ingestion of meat extract in 9 out of 11 patients with peptic ulcer. Serum calcitonin (CT) levels were elevated rather gradually in 7 subjects. It was suggested that increased endogenous gastrin levels may have stimulated the release of CT. When salmon calcitonin (SCT) was admininstered intravenously at a dose of 100 MRCu before administration of meat extract, the rise of gastrin and CT was suppressed in 67% of cases as to gastrin and in 43% as to CT.

A female case of Kallmann's syndrome.

A case of 20-year-old woman with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia is reported, since very few female cases of Kallmann's syndrome have been reported so far in Japan. Three uncles on the father's side had no children. Height was 168 cm, and arm span 165 cm. The olfactory test revealed complete anosmia. Bone age was 13 year. Chromosome was 46 XX and normal karyotype. Basal levels of serum FSH, LH and estrogens (E1, E2 and E3) were low. Serum FSH and LH levels rose slightly only after LH-RH administration, and did not increase in clomiphene test. Plasma estrogens did not increase after daily injection of 150 IU of HMG for 3 successive days. The response of serum GH to arginine infusion was normal, while that to insulin-induced hypoglycemia was poor.

A case report of Turner's syndrome with ring X chromosome.

A case of Turner's syndrome with short stature and 45, XO/46, XXr mosaicism in chromosome study was presented. With special emphasis on endocrinological study, the size of the breasts was normal in contrast to the poor development of the breasts in most of types of Turner's syndrome. She showed normal thyroid function, slightly low level of urinary 17-OHCS, decreased 17-KS, poor response in metopirone test and poor response of HGH to insulin.
