Measurement of bacterial flagellar thrust by negative dielectrophoresis.

The force produced by the flagella of the bacterium Salmonella typhimurium has been measured using negative dielectrophoretic methods. The bacteria are held in a force funnel, produced using a nonuniform electric field. When the motor force is balanced against an opposing negative dielectrophoretic force the bacteria become motionless. Numerical simulations have been used to estimate the electric field gradient in the electrodes. Together with experimental observations of bacterial motion the data gives a value of the force produced by the bacterial motor to be 0.37 pN.

Cadmium intake and cadmium in the human kidney.

The diet and cigarette smoking are the main sources of cadmium intake in people not occupationally exposed to cadmium. Using data gathered from the literature, it is shown that there is a statistically significant relationship between the average cadmium intake in various countries and the average kidney cadmium concentration in 40-60 year old people living in those countries. It is estimated that a regular dietary intake of cadmium of 175 micrograms/day would cause the concentration of cadmium in the renal cortex to reach the critical level in 50 years.

Behaviour problems in children with learning disabilities: to what extent do they exist and are they a problem?

The parents of 68 young children with learning disabilities were interviewed to assess the number and type of behaviour problems that their child exhibited. Parents' perceptions of their ability to cope with the behaviours were sought. The average number of behaviour problems was 7.4 per child, with poor concentration and sleep problems occurring most frequently. Fifty-seven per cent of parents who reported that their child hurt themself felt unable to cope with those behaviours. Scores of parents' perceived coping skills and malaise were associated with the number of behaviour problems. Parents who reported that their child hurt themself, hurt others or had a sleep problem were likely to have a higher malaise score.
