The neural crest gives rise to a variety of tissues, including peripheral neurons, Schwann cells, melanocytes and ectomesenchymal cells, which include the smooth muscle cells of large arteries. Cell lines derived from neuroblastoma (a neural crest tumor) have at least two distinct morphological cell types, a neuroblastic phenotype (N-type) and an epithelial-like phenotype (S-type) with characteristics of substrate-adhesiveness. We have analyzed 17 human neuroblastoma cell lines using a panel of monoclonal antibodies against cytoskeletal proteins. Three neuroblastoma cell lines (KP-N-SI, KP-N-YN and SMS-KCN) bound an alpha -smooth muscle actin antibody. In addition, one of these cell lines (KP-N-SI) bound anti-desmin monoclonal antibodies as determined by indirect immunofluorescence. A total of eight cloned cell lines were obtained from the above parent cell lines. These were composed of either N- or S-type cells and were confirmed to be the common neuroblastoma origin from each parent cell line by chromosomal analysis. Alpha-smooth muscle actin and desmin were demonstrated in the S-type cloned cells by indirect immunofluorescence, as well as by two-dimensional Western blot analysis. These results were confirmed by Northern blot analysis using a specific probe (pSH alpha SMA-3'UT) to human alpha-smooth muscle actin mRNA. This is the first report of the presence of alpha-smooth muscle actin and desmin in neuroblastoma cell lines. These data show that in addition to giving rise to cells with neural, Schwann cell and melanocyte markers, neuroblastoma can also give rise to the cells expressing smooth muscle cell markers.
Patients with endometrial carcinoma underwent angio computed tomography (CT) prior to surgery to evaluate the extent of the carcinoma. The subjects of the study were 87 patients operated on at the Cancer Institute Hospital during the period 1983 to 1986. After preoperative bilateral internal iliac angiography, angio CT was performed using the already inserted catheters. Although the intact uterine wall was enhanced by the angio CT, the cancerous lesion was not, which permitted easy recognition of the cancerous lesion as a low-density area. To evaluate the degree of myometrial invasion, the minimal thickness of intact uterine wall was measured in the CT image, and was compared later with findings from the operative materials. The comparison showed that for all the patients, the minimal thickness of the intact uterine wall as shown in the CT image was comparable to the actual minimal thickness of the operative materials. Because depth of myometrial invasion is known as an important prognostic factor, measurement of the minimal thickness of the intact uterine wall as shown in the CT image is useful as an objective prognostic factor. Angio CT facilitates recognition of myometrial invasion preoperatively.
We reported two cases of terminal ileitis caused by Yersinia enterocolitica (Y.e.). Y.e. was proven by stool culture in each case. They were admitted to the hospital complaining abdominal pain. They are examined by X-ray and endoscopy in the different time, and their examination revealed edema, coarse mucosa and varioliform elevated lesions with the passage of time.

The purpose of this study is to find out if the personalities of siblings are similar or different. Subjects used were Doshisha University students and members of their families, provided those families had only two children. Altogether 29 pairs of boys and their younger brothers, 47 pairs of boys and their younger sisters, 44 pairs of girls and their younger brothers, and 51 pairs of girls and their younger sisters were given the MMPI individually. Sibling status effects were found in many of the MMPI scores according to the type of sibling dyads and birth order, especially for the sibling dyad of elder brother and younger sister. Personality relationships between the first and second child showed that there were significant correlations in many MMPI scales: L, K, Pd, Pa, Pt, Sc, Si, Conflict resolution, Manifest anxiety, Repression-Sensitization, and Hostility. Among the four types of sibling dyad, the pairs of girls and their younger brothers showed the highest correlation in their personality.
Intravenous digital subtraction angiography using Fuji computed radiography system (FCR-DSA) was used to evaluate 57 preoperative patients with clinical manifestations of peripheral vascular disease of lower extremity. With its high contrast resolution and good special resolution, image of FCR-DSA could offer optimal information of vascular abnormality in lower extremity distal to midfoot for the diagnosis and the choice of management.

Diverticulum of the gastric body is uncommon and the coexistence of this lesion and gastric carcinoma much more. The authors report a case of diverticulum and carcinoma of the gastric body in a 66-year-old woman. The partially resected stomach exhibited a diverticulum, 3 X 3 X 2 cm in size, on the lesser curvature and a carcinoma of the depressed type on the posterior wall. The latter was IIc + III-like advanced carcinoma showing poor differentiation histologically and partly invading the diverticular wall, which had no muscular layer (i.e., pseudo-diverticulum). As for pseudodiverticulum, carcinoma cells invading the submucosa will reach the serosa easily. It is important not to overlook carcinomas in or around the diverticulum.

We carried out experimental studies in which Vx2 carcinoma was inoculated submucosally into the esophagi of 57 rabbits. The purpose was to clarify the mode of tumor growth and lymph node metastasis of esophageal cancer. The inoculation was given into five different segments of the esophagus and the cardia in six different groups of rabbits: the cervical (Ce), the cervicothoracic junction (Ce = Iu), the upper thoracic (Iu), the middle and lower thoracic (ImEi) and the abdominal (Ea) segments and the cardia (C). The lymph node metastatic pattern of the Vx2 carcinoma was then observed. The Ce and Ce = Iu located carcinomas metastasized to the cervical and upper thoracic areas; the Iu located carcinomas metastasized mainly above the tracheal bifurcation; the ImEi located carcinomas metastasized equally above and below the tracheal bifurcation. In cases of the Ea and C located carcinomas, the lymph node metastasis was restricted to the abdomen when serosal invasion was excluded but it spread widely from the abdomen to the neck when serosal invasion was positive. Thus, in experimentally-induced carcinoma, tracheal lymph node metastasis occurred with a high frequency. As intraoperative assessment is closely related to anatomical factors and operative risk, care should be taken that such assessments are thoroughly carried out.
Forty-seven serial whole-limb angiograms using ioxaglate as the contrast medium were obtained. The contrast column passing through the arteries of the extremities was sequentially analyzed in all of the whole-limb angiograms. Good results could be expected in percutaneous femoral arteriography by the antidromic injection of 30 ml or more of the contrast medium at various speeds ranging from 3 to 4 ml per second.
One hundred and forty-four lower extremity arteriograms of 119 patients with Buerger's disease have been analysed. The 'corkscrew' appearance of collateral circulation was seen in 27.1% of 144 limbs affected by thromboangiitis obliterans, but in only 3.2% of 63 limbs affected by arteriosclerosis obliterans. We believe that the corkscrew vessel is highly characteristic of Buerger's disease and represents dilated vasa vasorum of the occluded main artery. The appearance of corkscrew vessels extending from the arterial occlusion sites to the periphery of the feet without opacification of the main pedal arteries indicated a poor prognosis.
