Leukemia was observed in 45 per cent of hairless mice at 8 to 10 months of age and 72 per cent at 18 months. The incidence of leukemia in normal heterozygous mice of the same age is about one per cent at 10 months and increases to 20 per cent at 18 months. Other tumors are rare; two mammary adenocarcinomas occurred in heterozygotes, and an epidermal squamous cell carcinoma was found in a hairless mouse. Murine leukemia virus was isolated from normal and leukemic mice of both genotypes on SWR/J- and C57L/J-METC, but not BALB/cJ-METC. If this virus is responsible for the leukemia in HRS/J mice, the mutant gene (hr) enhances susceptibility and the wild-type allele (+) induces resistance to leukemogenesis, i.e., malignant transformation of reticulo-endothelial tissues occurs rather than inhibition of viral replication as both genotypes harbor virus in high titers. The two types of HRS/J mice, hr/hr and hr/+, are congenic, i.e., they differ only with respect to one allele (hr or +) at the mutant locus. This single gene difference should lend itself to analysis of the interaction of a specific gene and murine leukemia virus.

The question of whether ampicillin and sulbactam are able to penetrate sufficiently into costal cartilage tissue was investigated in 21 children undergoing surgery for funnel chest malformations. The concentrations of both compounds were determined in the core and mantle pieces of samples taken 45 min or 120 min after infusion of ampicillin/sulbactam (33.3/16.7 mg/kg bodyweight) preoperatively for antibiotic prophylaxis. Ampicillin was determined by bioassay and sulbactam was determined by gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry. Mean concentrations of ampicillin were 23.3 mg/kg and 10.4 mg/kg at 45 min and at 27.4 mg/kg and 7.8 mg/kg 120 min in the mantle and core piece, respectively. Mean concentrations of sulbactam were at the same time 21.3 mg/kg and 9.7 mg/kg and 17.5 mg/kg and 11.9 mg/kg, respectively. These values indicate that both compounds achieve high concentrations even in bradytrophic tissue such as cartilage. The concentrations exceed the MIC values of important bacterial pathogens involved in postoperative wound infections. Therefore ampicillin protected by sulbactam appears to be a well-suited agent for perioperative prophylaxis in thoracic surgery.
The amino acid composition in the chyme and faecel protein after feeding pigs with different diets is described. It is to be stated that chyme protein cannot necessarily be considered homogenous. Faecal protein shows less considerable variations in its composition and deviates distinctly from the composition of the faecal bacteria. The quota of bacterial crude protein was calculated according to the content of 2,6 diamino pimelic acid. In the chyme protein (end of the ileum) it amounted to approximately 30% and in the faecal protein to approximately 50%.
The composition of amino acids in faecal bacteria of pigs is described. A total of 15 faeces samples from experiments with three different rations was assessed. The conversion factor 26.1 for the calculation of bacteria-N from the content of 2.6 diamino pimelic acid is stated.
Growing pigs were provided with ileocaecal re-entrant cannulae to make it possible to investigate the protein and amino acid flow in various parts of the digestive tract. The three animal protein sources casein, dried skimmed milk and fish meal were tested. Information is given on the values of the crude protein and amino acid flow in the digestive tract as well as the apparent and true digestibility of the crude protein and the amino acids for the individual sections of the intestines (small and large intestine). After rations far surpassing the amino acid requirement an increased excretion of endogenous amino acids in the small intestine has to be expected. Digestion studies have to take more account of this circumstance.

Tests for identity of ha (hemolytic anemia) and ls (lymphosarcoma) in the rabbit show that they are both allelic and identical by descent and that the two different conditions result from interaction of these genes with the host genotype. Hemolytic anemia is the primary cause of death in compound heterozygotes (ha/ls) with increasing lympho-proliferative disease with age. Ages at death of histologically confirmed affected rabbits range from 5 days to 22.5 monts with an average of 10.5 months. The symbol ha will now be used to represent the gene for either disorder.
