Accurate staging is the basis for optimal therapy in the management of the gynaecological cancer patient and, in recent years, peritoneal washings are one of the techniques used to determine this, both at the initial and subsequent laparotomies. Two hundred and four peritoneal washes were obtained from 175 patients during a 5-year period. Fifteen cases of histologically proven intraperitoneal tumour were confirmed in 11 cases by periotoneal cytology at initial operation, a sensitivity of 73%. At second-look laparotomy, 3 of 9 histologically proven malignancies were confirmed by cytology, a sensitivity of 33%. One false positive diagnosis was made in the series. Procedures to avoid both false-positive and false-negative diagnoses by the clinician and the laboratory are discussed, and a review of the literatue is provided.
Dacron-reinforced Silastic sheets were removed from two patients who had previously undergone surgery for internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint. Excised tissue from around the joints was submitted for histological analysis, revealing a diagnosis of detritus synovitis. The significance of these findings with respect to the insertion of foreign material into the jaw joint is discussed in the light of recent research.
The case report describes the clinical and pathological features of a young girl with ovarian teratoma which showed a predominance of neural tissue. The peritoneal involvement by an admixture of mature and immature glial tissue resulted in the death of the patient despite surgery and cytotoxic chemotherapy. There was an association between this tumour and the presence of carcinoembryonic antigen and alphafetoprotein in the serum and ascitic fluid.
Although pseudomyxoma peritonei is comparatively rare, the simultaneous occurrence in this condition of mucinous tumours of ovary and appendix is common and has been termed pseudomyxoma peritonei ovarii et appendicis. Four closely followed patients in a small series showed only 25% 6-year survival. This paper presents a further case with a 14-month follow-up.
A 6-year study of bacteria isolated from swabs taken from clinically apparent infections of the stump of the umbilical cord showed an overall infection rate of 0.7% (200/27,107), with a preponderance of Gram-negative organisms as compared with Gram-positive organisms (171/118), an excess which was statistically significant. When the data were broken down into premature and non-premature nurseries, the incidence of infection in the former was 2.08% (84/4028) and in the later 0.5% (116/23,079), a highly significant statistical difference. Most of the organisms isolated from the premature nurseries were Gram negative (83/120) and this finding too was statistically highly significant.
In a previous paper, a significant recent increase in the incidence of congenital renal tract malformations discovered in perinatal autopsies at the Royal Women's Hospital, Brisbane, was reported. In an attempt to throw some light on the cause of this increase, both the types of renal tract malformations and the associated abnormalities in other systems observed during the past 15 months were compared with those observed in the same institution during the preceding nine years; no significant differences were detected. However, when these groups were compared with similar studies elsewhere, there were obvious differences in both the type of renal tract lesion discovered and in their associated anomalies.

A four-year study of the bacteria isolated from neonatal eye swabs at Royal Women's Hospital, Brisbane has been carried out. Of infants admitted to nurseries 2.7% (571/21217) had positive cultures. The incidence of infection in permature non-premature nurseries was 9.7% (221/2273) and 1.8% (350/18944) respectively, a highly significant difference. There was a preponderance of Gram-negative organisms in the former (67%) and of Gram-positive organisms in the latter (69%), each a statistically significant difference. Neisseria gonorrhoeae was isolated 8 times (1.4%) during this period.
