The effect of polyamines on herpes simplex virus type 1 DNA polymerase purified from infected baby hamster kidney cells (BHK-21/C13).

The DNA polymerase whose synthesis is directed by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) DNA was purified 545-fold from BHK-21/C13 cells 16 h after infection with the virus. Spermidine and spermine stimulated the activity of the polymerase over the concentration range 0.5 mM to 2.5 mM. This effect was enhanced with increased concentrations of polyamine, maximum stimulation being threefold and fourfold for spermidine and spermine respectively. The diamine, putrescine, had little effect on the enzyme at the concentrations used (0.25 to 1.25 mM).

Conjugation of polyamines in mammalian cells in culture.

In cultures of BHK-21/C13 cells (Syrian baby hamster kidney fibroblasts) or 3T6 cells (Swiss mouse embryonic fibroblasts), spermidine and spermine undergo conjugation to a low molecular weight moiety which, under certain conditions, is excreted from cells into the extracellular fluid. A schematic model has been devised to describe the various metabolic processes that may be involved in the control of polyamine levels in mammalian cells and their extracellular fluid.

Expenditures for health care of children and youth in the United States.

This paper describes the expenditures for health care in the United States in fiscal year 1975. Proportionately, health expenditures for children and youth are lower than for other age groups. The average per capita expenditure for children and youth was $212.00. For children and youth public health care expenditures represented 24 per cent of the total; from public funds, Medicaid and the Department of Defense were the largest two programs; from the public sector, the federal government provided two thirds of the total health expenditures. For children and youth, two thirds of all health expenditures were for hospital care and physicians' services.

Health services needs of children in day care centers.

In order to assess health services needs of children in day care centers, interviews were carried out with health coordinators or directors of 52 licensed day care centers in Berkeley, California. Over one-third of the centers lacked a designated health coordinator; one-fourth of the centers lacked written health guidelines and/or emergency guidelines; almost one-half lacked nutrition education services; and over two-thirds lacked a dental health education program. Only one out of five centers was willing to admit mildly ill children. Health coordinators and directors showed strong preference for care of mildly ill children at home by a trained worker. The presence of a designated health coordinator and of state funds was highly associated with the content and scope of health services provided.

A national health program for infants, children and youth.

Health care in the United States is widely considered to be a right of infants, children and youth. With our current national concern for the increase in the cost of health care, children and youth represent a possible candidate population for early special coverage under a national health program.

General revenue sharing funds for the health care of mothers and children.

In a study of the use of General Revenue Sharing (GRS) funds by the states and by cities of 100,000 and over in the United States for fiscal years 1973 and 1974, we found that few states and large cities allocated or requested GRS funds for Maternal and Child Health (MCH), Crippled Children (CC), and related services. One third of the states and cities reported suggestions for use of GRS funds for MCH, CC, and related services.

Health services and needs in day care centers.

A survey of health services in a group of licensed day care centers indicates a general lack of written guidelines, failure to have a designated health coordinator and a serious paucity of nutrition and dental education programs.

Maternity and perinatal services in an urban-suburban area.

The need for community-wide planning of maternity and newborn services is illustrated by a survey of services in Alameda County, California. The decline in birthrate, coupled with the persistence of a number of low volume obstetrical and newborn units, is reflected in generally underutilized and unevenly distributed services. Primary, intermediate and tertiary levels of care are represented, but not always in a logical relationship to community needs. Postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology and in pediatrics continues to produce increasing numbers of specialists despite declining fertility and a decline (represented by children and youth) in the total population.
