[Joint surfaces of the carpometacarpal articulation of the thumb in man].

With respect of height and width of the proximal joint surface of the macerated 1st metacarpal bone as well as of height of the left trapezium results significant minor values compared with bones of right extremities. The measurement datas of height and width of both joint surfaces at the left macerated specimens are less significant than at left humid preparations. With respect of height of the proximal articular surfaces of the right 1st metacarpal bone, there are greater values than at the cartilageneous preparations by statistical significance. At macerated and humid preparated articulation surfaces of the saddle moint of the thumb there are 3 typical profiles in the 2 main planes: a spiral curve (vaulted in the dorsal or ulnar direction), a circular curve, and a s-shaped curve. The radius of the curve will be determined with adaptation of defined curve patterns. At the distal joint surface of the macerated trapezium, the circularly and spirally curved profiles are significantly much more crooked in the dorso-palmar direction than at the cartilageneous articulation surface on the contrary. The humid preparated distal joint surface of the trapezium in the radio-ulnar direction is clearly much more curved. The spiral form is found in 52,6% of all macerated and in 41,6% of all humid preparated specimens. The s-shaped profile is very rarely found at macerated joints (8%), whereas it appears in 26% at humid preparated surfaces. Corresponding cartilageneous saddle joints of the thumb are even similarly curved in 47% of the radio-ulnar and 40,5% of the dorso-palmar joints slices. The clear majority of the opposite carpometacarpal joint surfaces of the thumb show an individually variabel, partly an incongruent curving attitude. If different profiles at corresponding humid preparated joint surfaces assemble the following curvatures prevail: a) In the radio-ulnar cutting direction the combination: circular curve of the distal joint surface of the trapezium and spiral curve of the proximal surface of the 1st metacarpal bone, b) in the dorso-palmar direction: the combination spiral curve of the distal surface of the trapezium and circular curve of the 1st metacarpal bone.

[Transversus nuchae muscle: two observations of hitherto unknown deviations of its nerve supply (author's transl)].

The transversus nuchae muscles were dissected at a male specimen of 81 years on both sides and also the different nerve supply were investigated precisely. On the right side we found a muscle with 2 bellies 125 mm in length and 2 mm in width. The fibers extended from the external occipital protuberance to the parotid fascia. The right muscle was supplied by the doubled parts of the anterior branches of the great auricular nerve with an anastomosis to the inferior buccal branch of the facial nerve. The left transversus nuchae muscle occured with a total length of 93 mm and also a width of 2 mm. Course and attachment proved the same as on the right side. The left muscle was supplied by a short part of an anastomosis between the posterior branch of the great auricular nerve and the occipital branch of the posterior auricular nerve of the facial nerve. The investigated, hitherto unknown, nerve anastomoses had not been stated in the anatomical literature since yet.

[Form and attachment of the human sinus tarsi and canalis tarsi ligaments].

In addition to loose connective tissue, fat and blood vessels, the sinus and canalis tarsi also contain the capsules for the intertarsal joints as well as several varyingly stable tracts of fibers which present themselves in varying planes and directions but are nevertheless in a discernible arrangement to one another. This arrangement of fibers was studied on the feet of 40 adults whereby five distinct and clearly definable bundles could be regularly dissected. Starting from the lateral side and going medialis of the retinaculum mm. extensorum inferius, also a lig. talocalcaneum obliquum and a lig. canalis tarsi. Microscopically, fibrocartilage is evidenced in the ligaments and retinacula near their points of attachment to the bone. The ligaments lying lateral to the axis of movements for the talocalcaneal joint restrain the inversion while the medially lying lig. canalis tarsi prevents the eversion.

The influence of heat stress on plasma volume and intravascular proteins in sedentary females.

23 untrained femal subjects underwent a standardised thermal dehydration. Plasma volume (PV), hematocrit (HCT), total intravascular protein concentration (TPC), albumin concentration (AC), total globulin concentration (TGC) were determined before, immediately, 90 min and 180 min after the heat stress. The intravascular protein masses (IPM) were calculated from PV and protein concentration. In comparison to men the loss of body weight and PV was smaller. Consequently the TPC does not increase to the same amount in men. A tendency for a diminution of IPM could be observed but this shift was not significant, compared to males. According to these findings the colloid osmotic capacity remained on a relatively high level. Opposite to men the IPM of globulins increased in females after thermal dehydration.
