Local skin depigmentation is a potentially troublesome side effect of local steroid injection. Although many authors believe that it is a rare occurrence, this rarity may be a result of the low number of cases that are actually reported. The authors are of the opinion that the practitioner should take the time to explain depigmentation as a possible side effect of local steroid injection to those patients whose skin color places them at cosmetic risk.
Subchondral phalangeal bone cysts frequently are encountered when reviewing foot x-rays. Radiologically, these lesions appear as a focus of subchondral radiolucency surrounded by a rim of sclerotic bone. Radiologic and histologic examinations demonstrate that these lesions are identical to the subchondral bone cysts associated with osteoarthritis of the hip and the more recently described cysts of the hallucal sesamoids and the head of the first metatarsal.
When performing wart surgery of the foot, it is necessary to excise the lesion to the level where the superficial fascia is visible. This approach minimizes painful scar formation and ensures complete removal of the wart.

A clinical correlation has been described between hemorrhage within plantar callus and diabetes mellitus. One hundred patients were examined for the presence of hemorrhage within plantar callus. Hemorrhage was rigidly defined to rule out hemorrhage attributed to causes other than diabetes mellitus. The presence of hemorrhage within callus was found to be more clinically prevalent in insulin-dependent diabetics than in those who were not insulin-dependent.
