The main steps leading to a device for automatic bàcteriological analysis of water are described. The use of a new test for faecal contamination of water, the definition of a new culture method and the choice of a particular bactericidal solution are necessary for the realization of this apparatus. Processes of culture and detection of Escherichia coli are achieved within 13h. The present automatic device allows examination of 120 samples a day.
The goal of this work is to describe the evolution of bacteria resistant to antibiotics in an aquatic environment and to compare their importance at different stages: human flora, sewage, surface water. Coliforms, fecal coliforms and Aeromonas are selected at test bacteria. The incidence of this difussion and influencing factors are discussed.

Drinking water samples (836) of various origins have been examined for amoebae. For collector water, half of the samples are contamined without influence of the origin. So, occurrence of amoeba in underground waters is discussed. Filtration and disinfection are generally inefficient. Bottles of drinking water are very often polluted during bottling. International mineral waters of french origin are not so damaged during conditioning operation. Bacteria and amoebae populations are quite independant and can't be indicators one for another. Thermophilic amoebae strains are very rare and any pathogenic amoeba has been found during the study.

The antigenic structure of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase of the most representative Enterobacteriaceae species were compared with an antiserum to Escherichia coli glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. The results of the immunodiffusion experiments were confirmed and specified by micro-complement fixation studies. They demonstrated a total immunological identity between the E. coli enzyme and the enzymes of Alcalescens-dispar and the Shigella species, a marked relatedness of the Salmonella species enzyme and a more or less significant relation of the enzymes of the other Enterobacteriaceae species. Moreover, the micro-complement fixation had the same sensitivity and a better selectivity than the DNA/DNA hybridizations. The results show that, like DNA polymerase, this enzyme has evolved more slowly than the other enzymes studied at this time.
Since 1975 we have reinforced all measures to prevent post-operative infection in open heart surgery. The environment where we worked has been gradually improved first in our old Hospital and later in the new University unit. It was, therefore, possible to relate post-operative infection to our surroundings and four groups of patients operated upon under different stages of asepsis in the operating theatre were examined. We conclude that air-borne contamination during the operation is a definite hazard, and that HEPA filtration is quite efficient in reducing this risk.
A DNA/DNA hybridization study was carried out with 13 strains of Enterobacter gergoviae and 123 strains of Enterobacteriaceae, Mostly Enterobacter and Klebsiella species. E. gergoviae strains were very highly related (relative binding ratios: 88-96%) to the type strain CIP 76-01, as previously reported by Brenner and co-workers. No close genomic relationship was found with other species of Enterobacter and Klebsiella (mean relative binding ratio: 39%) and other Enterobacteriaceae.
An inquiry was held to determine the occurrence and quantitative importance of "Limax" amoebae in 8 swimming-pools of the North of France. The influence of water flow system, filters and water disinfectants was studied. The connections with the bacterial flora growing at 37 degrees C and the presence of strains able to grow at 41 degrees were analyzed. The significance of their presence in the swimming-pools is discussed from the obtained results.
Many psychrotrophic coliform organisms are isolated from samples of water supply. They are coming from water or soil and not from animal faeces. It is therefore necessary to identify coliform organisms to interpret accurately the results of potability analysis.
Eleven strains of Naegleria have been isolated from 126 samples of the cooling pond of an electric power plant near Metz, France. Three strains showed specific characters of N. fowleri (pathogenicity for mice after intranasal instillation, immunofluorescence with anti N. fowleri serum and non-agglutination with ConA up to 1 mg/ml. Some particular characteristics were noted; the cysts showed a high number of pores and the pathogenicity was is lower using Swiss mice than using NMRI mice. The need for a standardization of methods for isolation and characterization are discussed as well as the occurrence of N. fowleri at the site.
Melting point curves of DNA are used to calculate average GC content. Four methods of Tm determination are described and are used in the case of all DNA samples studied. The results presented confirme that thermal denaturation curves are asymetrical, and this limits the use of "normal probability paper" and "regression lines" methods. Best reproductibility is obtained by a study of the function (see article) followed by a linear interpolation of the median. This approach yields at the same time interesting information about bacterial DNA. The graphic determination of Tm appears to be the method for choice for routine analysis.
Four ultrafiltration units have been tested in order to concentrate bacteria in water. The experiments run with Escherichia coli allows the selection of an ultrafiltration apparatus which concentrates bacteria with high recovery efficiencies. The use of this concentrator is simple and fast. Its filtration power is very stable and its little capacity allows the continuous ultrafiltration of large volumes of water.
A survey was carried out in 1972 and 1973 on the microbial composition of town, hospital and slaughterhouse waste waters. The investigation concerned concentration of heterotrophic bacteria, germ tests, of faecal contamination, and of the following pathogenic bacteria: Salmonella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus.
A toxicity and bioaccumulation study was carried out in Colpidium campylum with sixteen pure isomers of mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-, penta-, hexa- and heptachlorobiphenyls and a commercial product: Pyralene 3010, dissolved in alcohol, after factorial study of the summation of effects between PCB and solvent. The position of chlorine atoms on the aromatic rings and their number influence toxicity, probably in relationship to the possibilities of hydroxylation of these molecules. The experimental conditions must be very carefully respected to obtain reproducible results.
This work studies the classification, by numerical procedure, of 111 strains belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. Their taxonomic position is discussed, in relation to the genus Citrobacter, Levinea, Enterobacter, to which some appear to be closely associated. The study is based on the usual biochemical and nutritional characters as shown by the utilisation of substrates tested as sole sources of carbon and energy. Six hierarchical classes can thus be defined. Their degree of affinity with members of the Enterobacteriaceae groups or genera is discussed. The diverse origins of the strains examined (human, soil, aquatic) are certainly the cause for the individualization of the new classes.
