Uterine estrogen receptors (ER) of the rat during pregnancy and postpartal lactation were assayed. Both the cytoplasmic and nuclear ER were determined by the controlled pore glass (CPG) method as previously described in detail. The cytoplasmic ER level slightly decreased as pregnancy advanced and then increased remarkably during postpartal lactation, with a tendency to decrease at 5 weeks of lactation when the estrous cycle could have recurred despite the nursing behavior of the rats. On the other hand, no remarkable difference in nuclear ER was noted during pregnancy and lactation. A high concentration of plasma progesterone could have reduced the translocation of the cytoplasmic ER to the nucleus and the replenishment of the cytoplasmic ER, despite a high concentration of plasma estrogen during pregnancy. In order to keep an environment of a high plasma concentration of estrogen similar to that of pregnancy, a long-acting estrogen (estradiol dipropionate) was injected in to the proestrous rats. The cytoplasmic ER rapidly translocated to the nucleus, followed by a prolonged maintenance of a low cytoplasmic and a high nuclear ER level until 7 days, with a gradual replenishment of the cytoplasmic Er and a gradual decline of the nuclear ER thereafter. A translocation of the cytoplasmic Er to the nucleus, similarly seen in the hysterectonized-adult rats treated with estradiol, was noted in the rats injected with estradiol at 3 weeks of lactation. In general, low estrogen and high prolactin may be held in plasma during lactation. These results indicate that the fluctuation of uterine ER simply depends on the plasma level of estrogen during pregnancy and postpartal lactation in rats.
The effect of testosterone propionate (TP) or estradiol-17 beta (E2) on the activities of thymidine kinase (TK) and tissue plasminogen activator (Act) in the prostates of 22 day old immature SD rats was studied. The Tailor and fibrin plate methods were applied to measure the activities of TK and Act respectively. Act activity was expressed in terms of the Urokinase International Unit. After a single TP injection im, TK activity began to increase at 24 h and peaked at 48 h followed by a rapid decrease. The maximum activity, 40.0 +/- 11.5 pmol/mg protein/15 min, was 50 times higher at 48 h and peaked at 96 h, with a subsequent decline to the control value within 14 days. The maximum Act activity, 5.1 +/- 0.4 U/prostate, was 1.6 times the control value. The activities of both TK and Act altered depending on TP doses, 1 mg/100 g BW of TP brought about their maximum activities at 48 h and 96 h respectively. Three TK isozymes were obtained from the prostates by DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. Fraction A, which was eluted in O M NaCl, differed from other isozymes in that its activity was only slightly suppressed by dCTP and was elevated most conspicuously after TP injection. Elevated activities of both TK and Act after TP injection were completely inhibited by Puromycin or Actinomycin D. The results of the present experiment demonstrated that TK and Act were synthesized in the prostate cells after TP injection and were androgen dependent. E2 did not inhibit the elevation of TK and Act activities by TP injection. In the present study estrogen showed a synergetic effect with androgen on these two activities, especially TK, in the rat prostate.
Microtus species are very useful as experimental small animals with herbivorous characteristics. In this report, to approach establishment of the use of Japanese field voles (M. montebelli) and Hungarian voles (M. arvalis) as experimental animals, the biological characteristics, breeding methods and reproductive performance of these animal species were comparatively investigated. The number of chromosomes of M. arvalis is 12n = 46, differing from those of M. montebelli, 2n = 30. The breeding and reproduction of the Microtus species were relatively easily accomplished in the laboratory, by giving high fiber-containing rations. These animals prove to be polyestrous and showed postpartum estrous on the day of parturition. In the breeding by the continuous mating of the same pair, there was little or no delay in implantation due to lactation, especially in M. arvalis resulting in continuous birth at intervals of 20 to 21 days. On examination of vaginal smears, Japanese field voles (M. montebelli) did not show any definite pattern whereas 23 out of 30 voles from Hungary (M. arvalis) examined showed 6- to 18-day cycles. There were remarkable differences between the Japanese voles and the Hungarian voles, both biologically and reproductively.

In order to elucidate the mechanism of development of cerebrovascular lesions in Menkes' kinky hair disease (MKHD), the authors examined the brain and its vasculature of an autopsied case of this disease in light and electron microscopy. The gross and light microscopic examinations revealed that focal degeneration including pseudolaminar necrosis of cerebral cortices roughly concentrated on the gyri in and around the Sylvian fissures where tortuous vessels with congestion and dilatation were most prominently present. Despite their conspicuous irregularity in shape of the lumens and in thickness of the walls, the vessels were devoid of significant changes in elastic lamina and intima. In contrast, mitochondrial disease manifested by enlargement and/or rounding of mitochondria with tubular cristae and dense body as well as vacuolar degeneration were noted in various sizes of vessels in endothelial cells, pericytes and medial muscle cells, which exhibited various degrees of degeneration. On the other hand the preliminary observation had disclosed the mitochondrial changes of the same character in the neurons in various structures of this brain, such as Purkinje cells, granule cells, and neurons in cerebral cortex, thalamus and globus pallidus, and even in glial cells. Therefore it seemed reasonable to consider that the mitochondrial disease in MKHD might be ubiquituous in the brain including its vasculature. The observations of various degrees of degeneration of vessel wall cells due to mitochondrial disease and of irregular proliferation of reticulin fibrils in the spaces among degenerated muscle cells of the tunica media may be the evidences responsible for the tortuosity, dilatation and congestion of vessels, which eventually give rise to the vascular lesions in the brain parenchyme in MKHD. The findings of increased numbers of enlarged specific granules in the endothelium of dilated vessels, and dense material accumulation in their perivascular spaces with proliferation of basal lamina may have something to do with dilatation of small vessels and alteration of their blood brain barrier.

All of the tubular adenocarcinomas of early gastric cancer in humans showed gentle transitions from surrounding normal to neoplastic epithelium. In mammary carcinomas in C3H/He mice, known as viral tumors, there were also transitional appearances from normal to cancer cells. Furthermore, it was possible in rats to trace gradations between normal fibrocytes and sarcoma cells in marginal areas of tumors induced subcutaneously by 3-methylcholanthrene (MCA). It cannot be explained by the mutation of a few somatic cells that transitions from normal to neoplastic cells were observed not only in viral tumors in mice but also in human carcinomas and in chemically induced tumors in rats. It seems well to think of the mode of origin of all types of tumors as an excessive cellular regeneration to make up for the functional disturbance of cells invaded by oncogenic viruses.
Peritoneal macrophages of mice, 48 hr after intraperitoneal administration of albumin (egg white), were studied. Almost all granules in the cytoplasm of macrophages stained by the supravital staining with neutral red were revealed to be colored brick red by the staining with Sudan III in the smear preparation. Because of lack of lipids in the inoculum, it is difficult to explain that these granules stained with Sudan III were lipids phagocytosed. The observation led the suggestion that the Sudan III stained granules in macrophages were out of all relation to lipids phagocytosed and that the granules indicated some functional phage of macrophages.

Operative mortality and morbidity for intracerebral aneurysms has recently reduced with microsurgical technique, so more functional prognosis such as visual disturbance due to fundal hemorrhages has been studied. Here vitreous hemorrhage secondary to ruptured cerebral aneurysms (Terson syndrome) was attentioned. Three patients had more over 2 hours of unconsciousness and one patient experienced repeated episodes of subarachnoid hemorrhage within a week. This suggested rapid increased intracranial pressure resulted in vitreous hemorrhage through the venous congestion, which had been reported by Castrén (1963). All patients became blind because of severe vitreous hemorrhage. First case was followed over 7 years with only conservative therapy, but failed to improve. Another 3 cases regained visual acuity soon after operation. We emphasized vitreous hemorrhage as an important functional prognostic factor after ruptured intracerebral aneurysms and effective results of vitrectomy was showed.
The authors report 6 patients (7 joints) in whom inflammation, dermal necrosis, dermatitis or fistula formation was attributed to the materials commonly used for joint endoprostheses. Histological appearances and chemical analyses of the involved tissues are presented, together with a discussion of the possible mechanism and methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Experimental immunotherapy with a mixture of allogeneic tumor cells and BCG cell-wall skeleton (BCG-CWS) was carried out against established autochthonous fibrosarcomas induced by 3-methylcholanthrene (MCA) in the subcutaneous tissue of rats. The inhibitory effect on growth in the early stage, tumor-size up to 2 cm in diameter, was significantly observed. No significant difference, however, was shown as compared with the effect of treatment with allogeneic tumor cells alone. That is to say, a more effective inhibition of growth due to the addition of BCG-CWS was not demonstrated.
