Morphology and pathogenesis of pneumoconiosis in dental technicians.

The morphology of pneumoconiosis occurring in dental technicians could be studied by systematic light and electron microscopical investigation of 30 lung preparations from such cases. Diffuse streaky fibrosis and, in some cases, nodular fibrosis was observed together with occasional formation of silicotic nodules that may lead to extensive transformation of the alveolar structure. The etiological relationship between occupational dust exposure and pulmonary changes could be documented by element analysis of dust deposits on histologic sections, and of dusts from grinding and polishing instruments collected in the laboratory. The energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis used in this study helps to differentiate and delimit this form of pneumoconiosis. The pathogenesis is discussed on the basis of light and electron microscopic results and physicochemical analyses.

[The torus palatinus].

The existing investigations about the Torus palatinus are not comparable. The tori are not described in all morphological details and very often without quantitative registrations. The present paper tries to show an economic way of quantifying and describing the Torus palatinus. Skulls from Griesheim (Kreis Darmstadt-Dieburg, Western Germany; "Fränkisches Gräberfeld"), Langd (Kreis Giessen, West Germany; "Alter Friedhof"), India and Pakistan, as well as crania of a population of chimpanzees from Eastern Liberia have been investigated. In the series from Griesheim and Langd the Torus palatinus was found in 32.7% and 34.5% respectively, in the examined crania from India and Pakistan the torus appears only in 3.7% of the individuals. The skulls of the chimpanzees from Eastern Liberia show the Torus palatinus much more frequently than it has been observed until now (in 17% of the crania).

[Long-term follow-up of lung function parameters in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis treated with prednisone and azathioprin or d-penicillamine (author's transl)].

The prognosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is poor, it amounts to 4-6 years (after beginning of the symptoms). Spontaneous remissions are very rare, the corticosteroid monotherapy shows a certain success in only 11-16-20% of the cases. Therefore, since 1970 we carry out a combined therapy (see above); the results, confirmed by pulmonary function tets (vital capacity, static compliance, pO2 at rest and after exercise) will be presented. In summary: (1) Azathioprin and Prednisone: After a treatment of 2 years: 6 patients improved, 2 deteriorated, 3 died; the corresponding figures after 4 years were 6/1/4, after 6 years 3/-/5, after 8 years 2/-/3; (2) D-Penicillamine and Prednisone: After 2 years 3/2/4, 1 unchanged; after 4 years 1/-/4, 1 unchanged. The results of the therapy are discussed especially regarding prognosis of the disease and used drugs.
