Peripheral polymorphonuclear leukocyte priming contributes to oxidative stress in early pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The cause of elevated blood leukocyte count in pregnancy is unknown. We hypothesized that priming of peripheral polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) caused this elevation. METHODS: Eleven women in the first trimester of pregnancy were included in this prospective study. Peripheral venous blood was drawn twice from each woman, before and after a medical abortion (pregnant and nonpregnant, respectively). Complete blood cell count, plasma alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and rate of superoxide release from separated phobrol 12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)-stimulated PMNL were determined. RESULTS: The PMNL count in early pregnancy was significantly higher, with a significant increase in the PMNL rate of superoxide release compared to the nonpregnant state. A linear correlation between the rates of superoxide release and PMNL counts before and during pregnancy was found. ALP levels were significantly elevated in early pregnancy. CONCLUSION: The increased PMNL count is probably a compensatory response to PMNL priming. The increased rate of superoxide release from primed PMNL may contribute to oxidative stress in early pregnancy.

[Mathematical simulation of the cooling and solidifying process in improving the quality of dental castings].

CASTS-3D (Computer Aided Solidification Technologies) is a FEM software system for the simulation of heat transfer, melt flow and solidification problems for foundry purposes. This software system may basically be applied to dental castings as well--especially if the FEM software system is optimized and exact data on the thermophysical properties of the dental alloys are provided.

[Age-dependence of adenosine deaminase activity in mouse lymphocytes from the spleen and thymus].

The ADA activity was determined in splenocytes and thymocytes of female CBA-mice in dependence on the age of the animals. The investigations were carried out in period of 0 to 120 weeks, the enzyme activities of corresponding cells of animals in the age of 6 weeks served as controls. Whereas the ADA activity of splenocytes did not change during the time of investigations (P = 5%; not significant in analysis of variance), the enzyme activity of thymocytes was diminished significantly in all animals older than 14 weeks. The ratio of the ADA-activities in splenocytes and thymocytes was 1:2 at the beginning of the investigations and 1:1 after 120 weeks.
