[Cryotherapy of malignant eyelid tumors].

The treatment of tumors of the eyelids must extend not only to complete removal or destruction of the neoplasm, but also to the maintenance of physiology functions. In addition, cosmetic aspects should be taken into consideration. In a prospective study, 278 cryosurgical operations performed for lid tumors in the years from 1980 to 1985 were followed up for 5 years to decide whether cryotherapy fulfilled these demands. We used spray freezing with liquid nitrogen, because the low temperatures and high freezing rates required for cell destruction are achieved only by this technique. The 5-year recurrence rate was 3.5%. The liquid nitrogen therapy is especially suitable when the eye lids are operated on, because the lacrimal system remains functional. Gas expansion cryotherapy should not be used in in the treatment of tumors, as it may lead to stimulation of growth.

Neuropathic ankle joint in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease after triple arthrodesis of the foot.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease results in pes cavus or equinocavovarus deformity. An accepted surgical correction is triple arthrodesis of the foot. In a retrospective study of 45 Charcot-Marie-Tooth patients, two cases developed neuropathic ankle joint after triple arthrodesis. This procedure prevents mobility of the tarsal joint and consequently increases stress on the ankle joint. If coupled with decreased joint sensation, it may predispose the ankle to neuroarthropathy. This paper emphasizes joint position sense as an important consideration before triple arthrodesis or any other surgical procedure.

[Results of cryosurgical treatment of conization wounds in comparison with electrocoagulation and Sturmdorff suture].

There is reported about results of curing and complications of cryosurgery on conisation-wounds in 102 patients using spray-freezing as well as contact method.--The results were compared with those of wound-care by electrocoagulation and Sturmdorff-suture technics. The evaluation was performed according to absolutely clinical criterions. Physical parameters like freezing depth and diffusion of temperature have not been measured.--Cryotherapy showed less complication and produces good cosmetic results. Cryotherapy with a sure aim means an enrichment of our therapeutic possibilities in treating conisation-wounds.

[New technique for use of low temperatures in uterine cavity (author's transl)].

Cases of repetitive or extremely secondary anaemia in the wake of therapy-resistant genital bleeding so far had been tackled by radium treatment, which led to radiological castration. Such approach was based on hysterosalpingography and established absence of malignancy, and it used to be applied also to younger patients with reduced or lost operability. The author have devised and tested a simple cryo-intrauterine applicator by which lasting or strong recurrent uterine bleeding can be readily controlled. Complete removal of the endometrium is now possible without any impairment of ovarian function. Foundations and methods are described in detail, with clinical conclusions being drawn.

[Experiences with cryoextraction of the lens from the vitreous body in 123 cases].

In 123 cases of lens luxation the lens was removed from the vitreous by cryoextraction. It was a success in 119 cases, always intracapsular, and in the majority of cases without or only with a minimal loss of vitreous. A vitrectomy or vitreous suction was never necessary. Evaluating these results, one would advise to employ this procedure early before an advanced vitreous destruction may occur.

[Cryogenic therapy device for use in gynecology].

A device and its required furnishings for cryosurgery is demonstrated; during 3 years of clinical use, it has proved its worth when attending to benign and malignant diseases of vulva, vagina, and cervix. On the base of open processes, liquid nitrogen serves as cooling agent. Both "spray" and "contact-freezing" may be applied after a short starting period of the device under temperature control. In order to avoid freezings of the tunica vaginalis, tubes of Teflon and Polyurethane foam have been tested successfully.
