The crystal structure of 3'-azido-3'-deoxy-thymidine (AZT), an antiviral agent that inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase, has been determined from three-dimensional x-ray diffractometer data. The crystal structure contains two independent molecules of AZT forming a hydrogen bonded dimer but exhibiting different conformations. These conformations are different from those theoretically calculated by molecular mechanics methods. The azido groups associate with each other and interrupt the base stacking, forming a sandwich of two stacked bases. The close conformational similarity of AZT to thymidine explains why AZT is a good substrate for thymidine kinase. The selective inhibition of reverse transcriptase by AZT is not due to any conformational restrictions imposed by the azido group but likely due to their stereoelectronic properties.

Equations describing the flow kinetics of immobilized glucose oxidase in open nylon tubes and in tubes filled with solid glass spheres were experimentally determined. Reactors of three different tube (dt) and bead (db) diameters were tested using various linear flow rates (vf) and glucose concentrations ([S]). The kinetics of the open-tubular reactors were described by [P] = 1.5.10(-3) [S] L0.86 vf-0.78 dt-0.9 and the kinetics of the beaded-tubular reactors by [P] = 5.10(-3) [S] L0.98 vf-0.75 dt-1.0 (db/dt)2.7, where [P] equals the concentration of H2O2 formed. The aspect ratio, db/dt, is the critical design factor for beaded reactors.
Primary localized amyloidosis of the ureter is very rare, and only 22 cases have been reported in the world literature. We report the twenty-third case along with a review of the relevant literature. Due to its radiologic resemblance to malignancy, many cases were treated by nephroureterectomy in the past. The case being reported here was successfully treated by local excision and ureteroneocystostomy.
The Broadbent-Bolton cephalostat produces intrinsically three-dimensional information about cranial form. Yet in the clinical setting, this information has been used primarily two dimensions at a time in the separate study of lateral or posteroanterior cephalograms. In this article we demonstrate an expedient use of existing cephalostat-based data sets to derive certain analyses of three-dimensional form. The technique is essentially the same as that of the Broadbent-Bolton "Orientator," an exploitation of the geometry of the cephalostat to simulate stereophotogrammetry. The three-dimensional method supports the usual biometrics of landmark locations, and takes advantage of a normative data base that is suited for semiautomatic analysis of syndromic data. The principal drawback of the method is its inability to represent curving form in three dimensions. However, in comparison with computed tomography (CT), it involves low radiation dose, is simpler to obtain, has an available normative data base, and is more practical for quantitative or long-term serial analysis.

A new concept of radical block resection of the hepatoduodenal ligament for carcinoma of the bile duct and new double bypass technique of portal circulation for the procedure were introduced. Clinical experiences of six patients were reported. By combined use of radical block resection of the hepatoduodenal ligament and double bypass technique, the radical resectability of carcinoma of the bile duct became a reality, and improvement of postoperative survival rate is expected.

Three patients with iliac artery aneurysms were seen at our institution with the chief complaints owing to urological manifestations. Iliac artery aneurysms may present with a transrectally palpable mass, hematuria, bladder outlet obstruction, ureteral obstruction, retroperitoneal fibrosis or renal failure. Any such manifestations may bring the aneurysm to the attention of a urologist before diagnosis.
An autopsy case of disseminated HSV type 2 infection occurring in a neonate at 32 weeks' gestation, delivered by cesarean section after premature rupture of membrane of 7 days duration, is presented. Herpes simplex virus type 2 was isolated from the vesicular skin lesion. The mother and patient had specific antibody to type 2 herpes simplex virus. Patient's parents had denied any herpetic orolabial or genital lesion during or before this pregnancy. Cultures from the cervical and vaginal swabs of the mother were negative for HSV. Postmortem examination showed hepatic necrosis, skin vesicle, devastating necrotizing inflammation of the brain, chorioretinitis and interstitial pneumonitis.
