[The effectiveness of GaA1As semiconductor laser treatment to pain decrease after irradiation].

Recently, sedative and antiphlogistic treatment is conducted with low energy laser irradiation. The purpose of the this study was to evaluate the effectiveness to decrease of pain just after irradiation by a GaA1As semiconductor laser. The irradiation apparatus was SEMI LASER NANOX (LX-800: G-C. Co.) with the following features: a wave length of (around) 780nm: the laser energy, 30mW; exposure time, 30sec to 180sec/per treatment. Diagnosis of pre- and post-operative sensitivity were classified into the following four grades: Grade 0 no pain. Grade I mild pain. Grade II strong but tolerable pain. Grade III intolerable pain (simultaneous with stimulation). The results were as follows: 1. In the hypersensitivity of dentin, the treatment was not effective with 2 cases of grade III, but with all of grade I, II (35 cases) the pain decreased just after irradiation. 2. It was effective in all cases with pain like periodontitis after root canal filling and pain after extraction of teeth. 3. It was effective in all cases with gingivitis, stomatitis, and gingival ulcers after infiltration anesthesia etc..

Immunohistologic study of pulmonary and lymphatic tissues from gnotobiotic pigs inoculated with ara-T-resistant strain of pseudorabies virus.

Ara-T-resistant strain of pseudorabies virus (PRV) was inoculated intranasally into six 2-week-old gnotobiotic pigs. Five inoculated pigs were sneezing and coughing. In pigs 1 to 4 killed on postinoculation days (PID) 3, 5, 7, and 9, respectively, PRV antigen was detected in respiratory epithelial cells, and pigs had severe pneumonitis. In pigs 5 and 6 killed on PID 11 and 13, respectively, PRV antigen was localized in macrophages in alveoli and necrotizing nodules. Immunoglobulin-containing cells (IgG, IgM, and IgA) were detected first in pneumonic lesions in pig 4 killed on PID 9. Detection of immunoglobulin-containing cells was coincident with pulmonary inflammation and regeneration of pneumonic lesions. The number of IgG-containing cells was greater than that of IgM- and IgA-containing cells. Corresponding to transient viral multiplication, IgG-, IgM-, and IgA-containing cells were demonstrated first in lymphatic tissues in pig 1 killed on PID 3 and their number was 5 to 10 times more than those in control pigs 7 and 8. Seemingly, PRV replication in lymphatic tissues stimulated the proliferative response of specific immunoglobulin-producing cells, and the appearance of immunoglobulin-containing cells in the lungs was associated with clearance of PRV and regeneration of pneumonic lesions.

[A new apparatus using the Micro Ultra-Sonic Aspirator (MUSA) system for microneurosurgery].

Matsumoto was the first to present the NIIC UltraSonic Aspirator for CT guided stereotactic aspiration of intracerebral hematoma. Based on the NIIC Aspirator, the authors have developed a useful tool for microsurgery by adapting conventional ultrasonic aspirators. This was done by making the aspirator lighter and more handy for use during microsurgical procedures. A newly devised apparatus using the Micro Ultra-Sonic Aspirator (MUSA) was applied clinically to surgical treatment for brain tumors, arterio-venous malformations (AVMs) and intracerebral hematomas. Using the MUSA system, it became easier to remove successfully tumorous mass and the nidus of AVM, because it minimized the risk of injury to the normal structures such as the surrounding brain tissue, vascular systems and the cranial nerves.

Weber-Christian disease associated with multiple perforations of the ileum and colon.

Panperitonitis developed in a 57-yr-old Japanese man during the course of Weber-Christian disease (WCD). Emergent operation disclosed three perforations of the ascending colon and two of the distal ileum. Histological study of the surgical specimen showed that all perforations were located at the centers of acute subserosal panniculitic foci. No vasculitis was discerned. In the previously reported three cases of WCD with intestinal perforation, perforation was solitary and seen in the small intestine. The cause of perforation was considered to be vasculitis in two cases. In the remaining one, panniculitis around the perforation was in chronic granulomatous stage. This was the first case of WCD in which acute subserosal panniculitis caused multiple ileocolonic perforations.

[Diffuse ulcerative lesions in the colon with intestinal Behçet's disease].

Ileocecal region is most commonly affected in intestinal Behçet's disease. Localized deep ulcerations which have a punched-out or undermining appearance with well-defined margin placing in this region had been noted in many cases. 41 patients with intestinal Behçet's disease were observed by colonofiberscope in Teikyo University Hospital from January 1982 to June 1988. In 10% (4 cases) of these patients, diffuse ulcerative lesions in the transverse colon and the distal colon were found. These diffuse lesions in the colon with Behçet's disease were seemed to be much like those associated with inflammatory bowel disease as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease in morphological characteristics. The clinical symptoms of these four cases with Behçet's disease including oral aphtha, genital ulcer, joint pain, skin eruptions, and eye involvement, preceded each colonic ulceration. The first two cases were affected with ulcerative lesion in the distal portion of the recto-sigmoid colon and the descending colon. And the last two were involved in the whole transversing colon by multiple deep ulcerations. Wide-spreading ulcerative lesion in the colon with Behçet's disease is a rare condition in the Japanese, and only two papers has been reported previously. Because clinical manifestations between Behçet's disease and inflammatory bowel disease are very similar in many points as oral aphthous ulcers, arthritis, eye involvement, skin eruptions, phlebitis, arterial occlusions, then, an overlapping field or a part of a spectrum of disease has been suggested by some authors. But, in the present circumstances, they are distinct disease entities, we think that these four cases are in an atypical condition with intestinal Behçet's disease.

Effects of methamphetamine upon circadian rhythms in multiple unit activity inside and outside the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

To investigate the circadian system of the golden hamster, multiple unit activity (MUA) was recorded inside and outside the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). MUA inside the SCN showed a daily rhythm with a daytime peak during a 24 h light-dark cycle (LD, 12:12), whereas MUA outside the SCN revealed a nighttime peak. The phase reversal of MUA between inside and outside the SCN in the golden hamster was similar to the rat which is also a nocturnal rodent. MUA rhythms to the lighting cycle started to freerun after methamphetamine administration. This result indicates that methamphetamine may affect directly the neural circadian oscillator to induce behavioral change.

Circadian oscillation of the multiple unit activity in the guinea pig suprachiasmatic nucleus.

In the guinea pig with chronically implanted electrodes, neuronal multiple unit activity (MUA) was recorded inside and outside the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Long-term recording of the SCN indicated distinct daily rhythms with a daytime peak in MUA during a 24-h light-dark (LD 12:12) cycle. On the other hand, MUA recorded from adjacent hypothalamic regions outside the SCN showed a phase reversal with a nighttime peak, similarly to the rat. The amplitude of the rhythms recorded outside the SCN was much smaller (one-half to one-quarter) than that inside the SCN. These rhythms persisted during constant darkness indicating characteristics of endogenous circadian rhythmicity. When the external light-dark cycle was delayed abruptly for 12 h, MUA rhythms showed a gradual phase shift taking 7-10 days for complete reentrainment. Overt behavior including sleep-wakefulness did not show significant and consistent daily or circadian rhythms in spite of the distinct oscillation in neuronal activity inside the SCN.

Increase of multiple unit activity during slow wave sleep in the cat preoptic area.

Multiple unit activities (MUA) in 307 brainstem sites were recorded by chronically implanted electrodes in cats, using a polygraph with 4 channel MUA recording units. During transition from waking to slow wave sleep, at 15 sites including the medial preoptic area (11), the diagonal band of Broca (2) and medial anterior hypothalamic area (2), consistently earlier increase of MUA in discharge rate was observed, while MUA in other areas decreased. Also, at 13 sites in these areas, a decrease in discharge rate was demonstrated during paradoxical sleep. These findings suggest a close relationship between the preoptic area and sleep mechanisms, supporting a notion that an active site for induction of slow wave sleep may reside in the preoptic area.

Action Potentials↗

Diminished sympathetic excitation of locus coeruleus noradrenergic neurons in the conscious mature spontaneously hypertensive rat.

We undertook a study to determine whether the activation of the nucleus locus coeruleus might be responsible for the sympathetic hyperactivity in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Conscious mature SHR showed increased arterial pressure and plasma catecholamines with electrical stimulation of the locus coeruleus. However, SHR showed smaller increases in arterial pressure and plasma noradrenaline than Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). The spontaneous unit discharge in locus coeruleus neurons responded reciprocally to peripherally induced changes in arterial pressure and blood volume. However, the unit discharge in the SHR locus coeruleus is less responsive than that in WKY. Therefore, the locus coeruleus in mature SHR does not seem to be involved in the hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. However, this may not be the case in young SHR.

Mineral contents in model diet samples for different age groups.

Model diet samples of eight groups (3, 16, 40, and 70 years old for both sexes), were analyzed for sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, manganese, aluminum, copper, barium, nickel and molybdenum by using inductively-coupled plasma atomic-emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Mineral intakes for 3 year olds were lower than those of other age groups because total food consumption was less. The intake of major elements, Na, K, P, Ca, and Mg, varied within about 20% of each other. The intake of other elements except aluminum fluctuated within 30% or more of each other. For most of the elements studied, the mineral intakes of 40-year-old males agreed within 16% with results previously obtained by a duplicated portion study.

[Ossified choroid plexus papilloma--case report].

While the calcification has been documented radiologically in 4 - 25 percent of the cases with choroid plexus papilloma, the ossification of choroid plexus papilloma has been reported only in 3 cases on literature. In this paper, we present a case of large ossified choroid plexus papilloma in the right lateral ventricle. A 35-year-old man was admitted with left hemiparesis and headache. Skull X-rays showed an abnormal calcified mass (25 mm x 23 mm x 14 mm) in the right temporal region. CT scan revealed an abnormal high density area protruding into the right lateral ventricle, and a low density area at the right corona radiata. Operation was carried out with a right temporal craniotomy. The mass was yellowish-elastic hard and protruded into the right inferior horn of the lateral ventricle. The histological examination of surgical specimen showed an ossified choroid plexus papilloma with some bone marrow formation and numerous calcification. Calcification of choroid plexus papilloma is found frequently, but ossification is a very rare neuropathological abnormality. Bone and/or cartilage formation in neuroepithelial neoplasms is an unusual event histopathologically. Several mechanisms have been proposed, such as (1) metaplasia of connective tissue, (2) transformation of neuroepithelial cells to mesenchymal tissue, (3) teratomatous nature, (4) heteroplasia, (5) mixed mesenchymal-neuroepithelial nature, and (6) ossification as an end stage of mucoid degeneration. In our case, it was considered that the bone formation resulted from metaplasia of connective tissue of choroid plexus papilloma.
