Genetic differences between two substrains of NZB mice.

We have compared the NZB/B1NJ (/NJ) and NZB/B1Pt (/Pt) mouse substrains with respect to a number of immunological and biochemical polymorphisms. In agreement with earlier findings by other workers, we detected histocompatibility antigen difference(s) between the two substrains. Serological analysis indicated that /NJ and /Pt expressed the same allotypes of H-2, Thy-1 and Lyt-1 antigens, while they differed for the Lyt-2 antigen. Amongst 15 biochemical polymorphisms, which we assayed, /NJ and /Pt differed for four, namely Pep-3, Mup-1, Gpd-1 and Hbb. In addition, the two NZB substrains differed for the Hc marker (haemolytic complement).

Residual stump metastasis from renal cell carcinoma.

A rare case of ureteral stump metastasis 8 years after nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma is reported. Twenty-six such cases are reviewed and the etiology of such lesions is discussed. Nephroureterectomy for renal cell carcinoma may be indicated when the risk of urogenous implantation and/or hematogenous spread is present.

Concomitant increase by peroxisome proliferators of fatty acid-binding protein, peroxisomal beta-oxidation and cytosolic acyl-CoA hydrolase in liver.

Inductions of FABP in hepatic cytosol by administration of tiadenol and clofibric acid were studied in rats, mice and guinea-pigs. In rats and mice, [1-14C]oleic acid-binding capacity of hepatic cytosol was increased, in association with induction of peroxisomal beta-oxidation, by the administration of either the two peroxisome proliferators. The increase in [1-14C]oleic acid binding capacity was responsible for the increase in the content of FABP in livers. The peroxisome proliferators caused an induction of acyl-CoA hydrolase of lower-molecular-weight form alone in hepatic cytosol of mice, although inductions of two long-chain acyl-CoA hydrolases (higher- and lower-molecular-weight form) were brought about in hepatic cytosol of rats. Guinea-pigs lacked the peroxisome proliferator-caused inductions of FABP, peroxisomal beta-oxidation and acyl-CoA hydrolase. There was no essential difference in the inductions of FABP, acyl-CoA hydrolases and peroxisomal beta-oxidation between tiadenol and clofibric acid, despite a marked difference in their chemical structures. These results suggest that the induction of FABP is correlated with the inductions of both peroxisomal beta-oxidation and cytosolic long-chain acyl-CoA hydrolase of lower-molecular-weight form.

Induction of rat hepatic long-chain acyl-CoA hydrolases by various peroxisome proliferators.

Induction of cytosolic long-chain acyl-CoA hydrolases was investigated in rat liver after administration of various peroxisome proliferators and related compounds. Treatment of rats with di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate, di-(2-ethylhexyl)-adipate or tiadenol induced hydrolases I and II, while acetylsalicylic acid induced only hydrolase II. Among the various phenoxyacetic acid derivatives and related compounds, 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2-(4-chlorophenoxy)-2-methylacetic acid, 2-(2-chlorophenoxy)-2-methylpropionic acid and clofibric acid induced both hydrolases I and II, whereas 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid induced only hydrolase II. All nine of the above-mentioned inducers also markedly increased the activity of peroxisomal beta-oxidation. Other compounds tested (2-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, 4-chlorophenol, phenoxyacetic acid and phenoxy-2-methylacetic acid) were ineffective as inducers. These results suggest that inducers of acyl-CoA hydrolase II also enhance peroxisomal beta-oxidation activity, but do not necessarily induce acyl-CoA hydrolase I. The structure-inducing activity relationships of these compounds are discussed.

Effects of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid on peroxisomal enzymes in rat liver.

The effects of feeding 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) on the level of peroxisomal enzymes in rat liver were studied. The concentration of triglyceride in serum was decreased and the activity of cyanide-insensitive palmitoyl-CoA oxidation, catalase and carnitine acetyltransferase increased. However, the extent of the increase in the activity of these enzymes by treatment with 2,4-D was less pronounced than that by 2,4,5-T treatment. The administration of 2,4-D or 2,4,5-T increased the concentration of polypeptide with a mol. wt of 80,000 in the light mitochondrial fractions of the liver from the rats.

Cystic lymphangioma of the colon. Report of a case and review of the literature.

A rare case of cystic lymphangioma of the colon is reported. The lobulated and fluctuant lesion was located in the splenic flexure and was associated with multiple adenomas in the entire colon. Well differentiated adenocarcinomas restricted to the mucosal layer were also demonstrated in two of the adenomas of the colon. Clinical features, appropriate treatment, and possible pathogenesis of colonic lymphangioma are discussed.

Thumb reconstruction by free sensory flaps from the foot using microsurgical techniques.

Four types of thumb reconstruction using microsurgical technique were performed in 23 cases; the dorsalis pedis flap, hemipulp (first web space) flap, wrap around flap, and toe-to-thumb transfer. The selection of which free sensory flaps should be used for thumb reconstruction is discussed. The selection of sensory nerves to be sutured as the donor and recipient nerves is based on the results of restoration of sensibility after free sensory flap transfers.

The double-Z rhomboid plasty: an improvement in design.

From clinical experiences with the double-Z rhomboid, which was originally described by Cuono, the differences between the original description and our operative results were pointed out. Our improved concept and procedure of the double-Z rhomboid are presented and clinical cases are demonstrated.
