[Economic aspects in selection of treatment method for tibial and femoral shaft fractures].

The aim of the study was the analysis of the costs of the treatment the patients with tibial and femur shaft fractures treated operatively and conservatively. There were 643 adults and among them 145 patients with femur shaft fractures treated by intramedullary nailing using open Küntscher method (48 patients), closed Küntscher method (35 patients), plating (35 patients) and conservatively (19 patients). There were also 498 patients with tibial shaft fractures treated by intramedullary nailing using closed Küntscher method (105 patients), plating (109 patients), screws (82 patients) and conservatively (202 patients). The cost of the treatment was the lowest in groups of patients with femoral and tibial shaft fractures treated by intramedullary nailing using closed Küntscher method.

The activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase in erythrocytes of rats with experimental neoplastic disease.

In erythrocytes of rats bearing Morris hepatoma 5123 the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase as well as the level of reduced glutathione increased on the 10th day after transplantation of the tumor. In the second phase of the tumor growth (20 days after transplantation), the activities of glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and the level of reduced glutathione in erythrocytes of the experimental animals were lower than in controls, whereas the activity of superoxide dismutase was at that time higher than in controls. On the other hand, the activity of catalase did not significantly differ from that found in healthy rats.

The content of N-acetylneuraminic acid in glycoproteins of erythrocyte membranes in Morris hepatoma 5123 bearing rats.

Changes in the content of N-acetylneuraminic acid in rat erythrocyte membranes at different stages of experimental tumour (Morris hepatoma 5123) development were examined. Its content was lowered on the 30th and 40th day after transplantation of the tumour cells, as compared to the results for normal healthy rats. As a result of the tumour growth, the content of N-acetylgalactosamine, galactose and mannose in rat erythrocyte membranes became lowered, whereas that of glucose remained unchanged. The content of fucose was raised at early stage of tumour growth, and remained at this high level till the 40th day of experiment.

The effect of an experimental neoplastic disease on the flux of sodium and potassium ions across red blood cells and on the lipid composition of their membranes.

The erythrocytes from Morris Hepatoma 5123 bearing rats took up Na+ and K+ ions from the incubation medium and released Na+ into the extracellular space at lower rates than did erythrocytes from intact control rats. The lipid composition of erythrocytes membranes from the tumor-bearing rats differed from that of membranes from unaffected rats, showing increased contents of phospholipid phosphorus and a decreased content of cholesterol, resulting in decreased cholesterol:phospholipid molar ratios.

Polymorphonuclear neutrophils function in splenectomized patients.

Some essential functions of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) were evaluated in 30 patients splenectomized because of rupture of the spleen. These cells revealed normal random migration, adherence, unstimulated O2- and H2O2 production. Phagocytosis of viable staphylococci was higher than in controls, whereas chemotaxis, bactericidal capacity, aggregation and stimulated O2- and H2O2 production were significantly impaired. PMN from splenectomized patients manifested also the decreased intracellular myeloperoxidase activity. The percentage of cells with receptor for Fc IgG in peripheral blood was markedly decreased. Plasma of these patients induced increased adherence of autologous as well as control neutrophils. The possible mechanisms leading to the observed events are discussed.

[Biochemical and morphological parameters of rats subjected to intensive physical effort].

Lactate dehydrogenase activity was determined in the liver and skeletal muscle and types of muscle fibers were studied in m.gastrocnemius of male rats subjected to intensive physical exercise. In the skeletal muscle LDH4+5 isozymes activity and percent of white muscle fibers were increased. No changes in LDH activity and morphological parameters were found in the liver.

[Changes in the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and in the content of reduced glutathione in red blood corpuscles in the case of tumorous diseases in the maxillofacial region (author's transl)].

The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and the glutathione content of red blood corpuscles were determined in twenty-five patients with tumors (of which nineteen were malignant and six, nonmalignant) as well as in a control group of twelve normal subjects. The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was markedly higher in all of the tumor patients than it was in the controls. Also, the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was found to increase with the time of existence of an untreated tumor.--Increased glutathione contents were determined especially in the early stages of tumor development. In patients with a relatively long record of malignant and nonmalignant tumorous diseases as well as in normal subjects there was observed no or only an inconsiderable increase in the content of glutathione.--This method of examination is assuming considerable importance for the differential diagnosis of tumors located in the maxillofacial region.
