[Intensity of electromagnetic field and electric current on human bodies induced by electric blanket].

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of various factors, such as different carriers, with or without ground connection to a blanket and status of its switch, on electromagnetic field induced. METHODS: To determine electric field, magnetic field and electric current on human bodies induced by electric blanket with a temperature--adjustable semiwave rectifier diode, which was domestically popular. RESULTS: Temperature was adjusted and controlled by a diode serially connected to its switch is put on and the blanket, with or without short circuit. When the switch is put on and the blanket is running in low temperature, if the diode is serially connected to the ground end of the power source, the intensities of electromagnetic field and current on the human bodies induced by the blanket was higher than those running in high temperature. CONCLUSION: The most important factor influencing field intensities of the electric blanket is in its switch.

[The protective effects of cardiac ischemic preconditioning on lung in cardiac operation with cardiopulmonary bypass].

UNLABELLED: Twenty direct vision intracardial operation patients were divided into two groups randomly. After cardiopulmonary bypass, ten patients were treated with myocardial ischemic preconditioning. The aorta were clamped for 3 minutes and released for 3 minutes (Group IP). Another ten patients were not treated with ischemic preconditioning (Group C), only underwent 6 minutes cardiopulmonary bypass. Then the aorta were clamped and intracardial operation were done. The left atrium blood and lung tissue were collected just after thoractomy and half an hour after cardiac reperfusion in both groups. RESULTS: (1) The numbers of polymorphonuclear (PMN) of the two groups were increased significantly after cardiopulmonary bypass (P < 0.01). (2) The number of PMN and SOD, PaO2 contents were significantly higher in Group IP than in Group C (P < 0.05). (3) The numbers of PMN in lung interstitum under microscopy were less in Group IP than in Group C. (4) MDA contents were less in Group IP than in Group C (P < 0.05). (5) Histological finding showed less damage in Group IP than in Group C. It is evident that cardiac ischemic preconditioning could protect lung against ischemia reperfusion injury. The possible mechanisms are that ischemic preconditioning inhibites the accumulation and activation of PMN in lung tissue and reduces the production of oxygen free radicals.

[Relationship between the risk factors of coronary artery disease and the severity of coronary artery lesions].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the risk factors of coronary artery disease and the severity of the coronary artery lesions. METHODS: A total of 446 consecutivey admitted patients were studied retrospectively. All patients suspected to have coronary artery disease and underwent a selective coronary angiography and a survey of risk factors during the hospitalization. RESULTS: Through Logistic regression analysis, advanced age, smoking, hyperlipidemia and course of diabetes mellitus were confirmed to be independent risk factors for coronary artery disease (OR = 1.02-1.23, P = 0.0406-0.0001). A significant correlation (F = 2.3130-19.2165, P = 0.1291-0.0001) between the severity of the coronary artery lesions and the age, the number of cigarettes in a day, the level of plasma lipids and the course of diabetes mellitus of the patients was found from the multiple regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Not only the development but also the severity of the coronary artery lesions is affected by the risk factors of advanced age, smoking, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus.

Effect of epidermal growth factor and dexamethasone on explosive deafness.

OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on cochlear hair cells of normal and explosion-stricken guinea pigs and the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and dexamethasone (DXM) treatment for blast hearing loss. METHODS: Immunohistochemical technique and auditory brainstem response (ABR) test were used. RESULTS: Scattered expression of EGFR was seen in inner hair cells (IHCs) and outer hair cells (OHCs) in normal guinea pigs. Segmentally distributing positive reaction was also located in stereocilia of hair cells. Distribution of EGFR reaction was seen in the cytoplasm of IHC 24 hours after exposure to blasts, and in the stereocilia of IHC and the cuticular plate of OHC 72 hours postexposure. At one week EGFR reaction in hair cells increased obviously and part of OHC stereocilia also showed positive reaction. EGFR reaction reduced at two weeks, though positive reaction could still be found in the stereocilia of hair cells at one month. Combination of EGF and DXM administrations promoted hearing recovery significantly. CONCLUSIONS: The healing of injured hair cells may be related to EGF.

[Distribution of transforming growth factor-beta and its receptor in bronchiolo-alveolar cell hyperplasia and bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma].

The distribution of the three isoforms of transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta (TGF-beta 1, -beta 2, and -beta 3) as well as their signaling receptor, TGF-beta type I receptor (T beta R-I), in bronchiolo-alveolar cell hyperplasia (BAH) and bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma (BAC) was examined by immunohistochemistry using specific antibodies. The results showed that the expression of one or more TGF-beta subtypes occurred in a large proportion of BAC and BAH tissues. The expression of TGF-beta 1 and TGF-beta 3 was increased in tumor cells compared with hyperplastic cells. BAC with expression of two or three ligands was associated with a higher incidence of lymph node metastasis. These results suggest that hyperplastic cells and cancer cells derived from bronchiolo-alveolar cell can synthesize and secrete TGF-beta isoforms and its receptor T beta R-I which may contribute to the progression of BAC in part.

[The effect of white noise on activity of nitric oxide synthase in cochlear nuclei of guinea pigs].

This experiment adopted lipoic amido dehydrogenase (NADPH-d) histochemistry method and image pattern analysis technique to investigate the relationship between nitric oxide synthase (NOS) neurons and activity of NOS and auditory threshold, and to explore the possible role of NOS neurone in cochlear nuclei of guinea pigs after exposed to white noise. The results showed that the quantity and staining intensity of positive NOS neurons in cochlear nuclei increased obviously after exposed to noise. It reached the peak 2 weeks later and remained high expression during 3-4 weeks. It restored 5 weeks later but was still higher than normal. Within 7 days after exposed to noise, activity of NOS in cochlear nuclei deviated from ABR threshold. After 7 days, activity of NOS had a positive correlation with ABR threshold (r = 0.9571, P < 0.01). It is suggested that NOS in cochlear nuclei might play double role after exposed to white noise. On one hand, a certain range of activity of NOS might help to restore injured neurons. On the other hand, over expression of NOS might exacerbate the injury of cochlear nerves.

[Therapeutic effect of Shengmai injection on respiratory function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the therapeutic effect of Shengmai injection (SMI) on respiratory function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: Twenty patients with COPD were continuously treated with SMI by intravenous drip in 14 days and examined the lung vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced vital capacity of the first second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC, maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV), maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), load respiratory time (LT), 6 minute walk distance (6 MWD), arterial blood gas analysis, and Brog dyspnea scale before and after treatment respectively and compared with itself or control group. RESULTS: After treatment all parameters of the treatment group were better than those of control group or itself before treatment except for FVC and FEV1/FVC. There were significant difference (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: SMI can improve respiratory function in COPD. So it is an effective rehabilitative measure in treating COPD.

[Preoperative nasal continuous positive airway pressure treatment as substitute for protective tracheostomy in severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative nasal continuous positive airway pressure(NCPAP) treatment was used as a substitute for protective tracheostomy before UPPP surgery in 42 patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome(OSAS) from 1994 to 1996. METHODS: Fifty-two patients operated on three years before this period served as control group. All cases were diagnosed as severe OSAS by polysomnography (PSC). RESULTS: There were no statistical difference in main parameters between two groups. Seven cases in the control group underwent protective tracheostomy whose apnea and hypopnea index(AHI) was 28.4-83.5 and lowest saturation oxygen (SaO2) were 7%-32%. One patient underwent emergency tracheostomy due to life-threatening situation during uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). There were 9 similarly severe cases who did not undergo protective tracheostomy in NCPAP treatment group. All patients underwent preoperative 5-20 day NCPAP treatment in treatment group. The average positive pressure was 1.16 kPa(11.85 cmH2O). There were significant difference in main parameters between the two groups. The AHI, SaO2 and sleep structure were evidently improved. UPPP was safely performed without protective tracheostomy and any complications in all patients with NCPAP treatment. CONCLUSION: This result implys that NCPAP treatment could be used as a substitute for protective tracheostomy before UPPP in severe OSAS.

[The effects of allitridum on the proliferation of rabbit aortic smooth muscle cells in vitro].

The effects of allitridum on the proliferation of cultured rabbit aortic smooth muscle cells (SMC) were studied with SMC incorporation data of 3H-thymidine(3H-TdR) and contents of superoxide dismutase(SOD), lipid peroxide(LPO), prostacyclin(PGI2) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP) in medium. The results showed that allitridum could inhibit SMC proliferation by increasing SOD activity, decreasing LPO, raising PGI2 and cAMP(all P < 0.05-0.01), and the inhibitory action was accompanied by the dose-effect relation.

[Characterization of some glucuronide conjugates by electrospray ion trap mass spectrometry].

To investigate the characteristics of mass spectra of some drug metabolites, solutions of glucuronide conjugates of N-(4-ethoxyphenyl)-2-hydroxyl-benzamide (etofesalamide), 4-(3H-1, 2-dihydro-1-pyrrolizinone-2-methylamino)-benzoic acid, 5-hydroxypropafenone and propafenone were analyzed using electrospray ion trap mass spectrometry in a multi-stage full scan mode performed on a Finnigan LCQ instrument. Sample solutions were directly introduced into the ESI source at a flow rate of 15-30 microliters.min-1 by a syringe pump. The mass spectrometer was operated in the negative ion mode. A full scan mass spectra of each analyte provided quasimolecular ion m/z M-1, and full scan MS2 and MS3 spectra gave characteristic fragment ions m/z 175 and m/z 113, respectively, which were derived from the glucuronate moiety of each analyte. The proposed interpretation of m/z 175 is the negative ion of glucuronic acid with a loss of 18 u (H2O), which produces m/z 113 after further losing 18 u (H2O) and 44 u (CO2). Fragmentation pathway has been established for each analyte. The results show that quasimolecular ion m/z M-1 and the characteristic fragment ions m/z 175 and m/z 113 in the multi-stage full scan mass analysis of each analyte can be predicted for future structure elucidation or quantitative determination of glucuronide conjugates by LC/MS.

[Comparison of demineralization of different organic acid to enamel].

The rates of demineralization of 5 organic acids (mathanoic acid, formic acid, propionic acid, Lactic acid, acetic acid, mixed acid) to the bovine enamel were tested and analysed with the self-made calcium ionselective microelectrodes(Ca(2+)-ISME) basing on a neutral carriers of ETH1001. The results showed; 1. The difference between the rates of demineralization of formic acid and lactic acid, formic acid and propionic acid, formic acid and acetic acid, acetic acid and mixed acid, acetic acid and lactic acid, propionic acid and mixed acid, propionic acid and lactic acid, lactic acid and mixed acid were of great significance (P < 0.01); 2. The rates of demineralization of acetic and mixed acid decreased with time, due to saturation of the solution during demineralization; 3. Ca(2+)-ISME was of the advantages of simplicity, rapidity, sensitivity and accuracy. The results suggest that the cariogenic potential is related to different acid products of different cariogenic bacteria, and the degree of mineral saturation within solution affects the rate of demineralization.

[Comparing the diagnoses of pneumoconiosis made by computer and experts from X-ray films].

The results on the agreement between microcomputer and experts for the diagnosis of pneumoconiosis from X-ray films are presented in this paper. On a set of 200 films, the diagnoses made by the computer and by five experts were compared; From 100 films, the agreement rates were 83.5% for the normal/abnormal, 73.0% for the four categories of profusion and 70.5% for the four categories of pneumoconiosis. From 100 films, the rates of agreament between the computer and the basic-level consultation group were 86.0%, 82.0% and 63.0% respectively. From 300 films for screening pneumoconiosis, the rate of agreement between the computer and the experts was 89.3%. The results demonstrate that the automatic diagnosis by computer is closer to the diagnosis made by experts.

[An effective method of mutual interference coefficients for correcting spectral interferences in routine ICP-AES for multielement analysis].

An effective method was used to correct spectral interferences in routine ICP-AES for multielement analysis. In this method, all the components in an analysed object were considered to be related to each other, a strict mathematical model was applied and the mutual interference coefficients obtained from the usual artificial samples were replaced by those from natural standard samples which had the some matrix as the samples to be analysed. These mutual interference coefficients were used to correct the analysis data of GSD samples, and the results were mostly more precise than those corrected by the coefficients obtained from artificial samples. The correcting speed of this method is quick enough to satisfy the requirement of real-time correcting of analysis.
