Automated adsorption isotherm device.
A device is described for the automated determination of the water adsorption isotherms of biological materials. The vapor pressure and weight of the adsorbate are measured directly with appropriate transducers, and equilibrium is defined on the basis of constant pressure. The accuracy of the device, determined on two samples with well-known water binding properties, is +/- 5%. Automation is achieved by electronic control.

The dicyemid Mesozoa as an integrated system for morphogenetic studies. I. Description, isolation and maintenance.
The morphological simplicity of the dicyemid Mesozoa is such as to allow mapping of enery individual cell during the development of the organisms. Individual cells are of a size amenable to micromanipulation and a number of potential morphogenetic makers is readily apparent. The possibility of raising the animals in vitro and obtaining developmental mutants makes these organisms excellent candidates for use as an integrated system to correlate cytodifferentiation and morphogenesis with genetic control. An axenic, nearly defined, medium in which the misozoans can be kept for over three months has been developed. Methods for isolating and maintaining the organisms are described.

The derivation of ecological relationships from physical and chemical principles.
Organic reaction networks are formalized by representing chemical species as points in a space and representing reactions by connectivity rules. Using the generalized network, the behavior of the system is investigated under conditions of electronically exciting input and output to a thermal reservoir. Under steady-state conditions the system undergoes material cycles of the type shown by the major ecological cycles. A consideration of the attractor nature of the equilibrium state of the system leads to the conclusion that the energetically lowest-lying molecules must be inputs into the material cycles. Certain general features of the ecological system are thus shown to follow from the physical and chemical properties of an organic reaction network.
