A retrospective study: osteoporosis and hormone replacement therapy.

The purpose of this study was to determine if women who undergo hormone replacement therapy postmenopausally, will demonstrate less osteoporosis than women who do not undergo HRT. The osteoporosis subjects were 195 women who volunteered to participate in an NIH-sponsored double-blind clinical trial entitled Safety and Efficacy of Fluoride Therapy in Osteoporosis. A convenience sample of 78 controls was obtained by inviting women seeking regular medical attention to join an epidemiological investigation of osteoporosis. The data were analyzed using Chi-square and Student's t-ratio. The study concludes that future retrospective and prospective analyses appreciate the complexity of the problem in terms of individual risk for osteoporosis.

The holistic health care of couples undergoing IVF/ET.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of health professionals as educators, counsellors and support system persons for couples undergoing in-vitro fertilisation/embryo transfer (IVF/ET). All health care professionals must take a more assertive role in promoting the holistic health care approach to IVF patients so that they may be protected from unnecessary emotional distress. Prolonged insensitive evaluations with no clear end in view intensify frustrations and erode the patient's self-esteem. Comprehensive medical/nursing services are needed, as well as ongoing education, counselling and psychological support. Holistic health care considers all diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. Emphasis should be put on answering patients' questions, allaying fears and recognising any medical or psychological factors that may be important during the course of therapy. Adequate pre- and post-operative preparation of the couple should be a priority for health professionals.

Nursing and medical students' sexual attitudes and knowledge. Curricular implications.

Sexual attitudes and knowledge of graduate nursing students were compared with those of sophomore medical students in a large, urban Midwestern university and also with the national normative values for nonmedical graduate students. The Sex Knowledge and Attitude Test (SKAT) was used to collect data. Graduate nursing students did not differ significantly in the attitude and knowledge of human sexuality when compared with sophomore medical students. Graduate nonmedical students were not significantly more knowledgeable, but were significantly more tolerant toward human sexuality than sophomore medical students and graduate nursing students. The fundamental implication is the need for more constructive education in human sexuality as a planned part of the nursing curricula.

Support for the woman with an ectopic pregnancy.

Increased knowledge and awareness among health-care providers as well as technologic advances have decreased the risk of death from ectopic pregnancies. More sensitive pregnancy tests and improved diagnostic procedures have contributed to earlier and more rapid diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy. Also, women in the childbearing years have become more aware of ectopic pregnancy. This has probably contributed to earlier diagnoses and interventions; however, data are not available to substantiate this hypothesis. Research is needed in this area, particularly to study trends in number, causes, and characteristics of women with ectopic pregnancy among reproductive age women (15 to 45 years of age).
