IgE-type antibodies to human serum albumin/ethylene oxide conjugates were determined in 153 patients (140 unselected, 13 selected for presence of eosinophilia) on regular dialysis treatment by radioallergosorbent test (RAST) techniques. In 10.7% of unselected patients and 30.8% of selected patients, RAST values suggested ethylene oxide sensitisation. High RAST values were commonly associated with anaphylactoid reactions during dialysis and with chronic asthma. Ethylene oxide antibodies should be sought routinely in patients presenting with these symptoms and the necessity of ethylene oxide sterilisation of disposable dialysis equipment should be re-evaluated.

The use of a trimmer for a lawn, which is covered with phototoxic plants such as Heracleum sphondylium and other Umbellifers, can lead to a phytophotodermatitis (trimmer's rash). An erythema of the light exposed skin, following a moderate hyperpigmentation, can cause a focal, vesicular lifting of the upper epidermis, whereby this toxic skin lesion appears similar to an allergic eczema. The best prevention of this harmless but bothersome reaction lies in the use of such an edger only in the evening hours.
Detergent residues are often accused to cause efflorescences of the skin. In the present studies different textiles were washed under standardized conditions and the residues analyzed. Textile probes were patch tested for 48 h on seborrheic and sebostatic volunteers. A second series of textiles was given to babies and small children. In all cases no reactions were observed. According to these results and further literature the contribution of detergent residues as a releaser of skin reactions is rather insignificant.
Intentional and non-intentional (ornamental and accidental) tattoos are reviewed. First, a survey of the history of tattooing is given and the different motives for being tattooed are discussed. The technique of tattooing and the histological pattern of ornamental tattoos are described. Typical risks are presented in detail. Various methods for the treatment of tattoos are discussed. In the second part, non-intentional (accidental) tattoos are reviewed in respect to etiology, complications and special therapeutic methods.
Tear gases are used as riot control agents on account of their irritant properties. Five cases of allergic contact dermatitis due to omega-chloroacetophenone (CN) and one case additionally due to 2-chlorobenzylidene-malonitrile (CS) are reported.

70 substances currently used in colouring human hair are reviewed from chemical and structural perspectives. On the basis of structural simularities the question of relationships to known contact allergens, in particular p-phenylendiamine and benzochinones, is examined. Hereby it may be discerned that despite the relatively large number of new substances, the dangers of new potent allergens or cross-reactions with widely encountered existing agents are limited.
