A case of alveolar cell carcinoma accompanied by fluid and electrolyte depletion through production of voluminous amounts of lung liquids.

A patient is described who showed typical features of alveolar cell carcinoma, including production of a huge amount of clear frothy lung liquid (as much as 4 liter per day), diffuse dissemination of nodular lesions throughout the lung, and tall columnar cell proliferation outlining the alveolar walls uniformly without architectural destruction in the terminal lung unit. From the results of comparative serial analyses of biochemical components in the liquid and the serum, it is suggested that the excessive liquid production in this case should be due to abnormal secretory functioning of diffusely proliferated carcinoma cells.

Fibercolonoscopy for the diagnosis of granulomatous colitis.

In order to clarify the significance of fibercolonoscopy in diagnosis of granulomatous colitis, the pathological, radiological, endoscopic and clinical differences between granulomatous colitis and ulcerative colitis were investigated on 12 cases of granulomatous colitis and 23 cases of ulcerative colitis, which underwent colonic resections between 1954 and 1973. The comparative studies have revealed considerable differences in their characteristic features besides the overlapping spectrum. As a consequence of assessments made of the various diagnostic techniques as to usefulness in differential diagnosis between the two colitis conditions, it was noted that fibercolonoscopy and biopsy under direct vision, when applied in conjunction with the conventional procedures, readily facilitate the differential diagnosis without any surgical intervention in all aspects, excepting the depth of inflammatory involvement and the presence of lymphangiectasia. However, the depth of the inflammed lesion as well as lymphangiectasia can also be estimated indirectly. Therefore, it seems that it is possible to make the differential diagnosis between the two colitis conditions even prior to colectomy, with the exception of atypical forms which represent overlapping findings.

A digital auto-recorder for measuring the drinking frequency of mice.

An inexpensive, automatic digital recorder to measure the drinking frequency of mice was designed. When an animal licked the spout of the water bottle, it closed the path of the current of the amplifier input circuit and a module converted the closure signal into an electric pulse. A camera preset by a timer automatically photographed the counter which had accepted the pulse. The apparatus was inexpensive and estimated the drinking frequency of many mice individually and simultaneously. This system is applicable as a pulse-recorder to physical phenomena other than water intake.
