Influence of adjuvant arthritis on main urinary metabolites of prostaglandin F and E in rats.

The influence of adjuvant arthritis in rats on main urinary metabolites (MUM) of prostaglandin (PG) F and E type was studied. 1) In our model rats, urinary excretion of PGE-MUM increased on day 11 prior to the appearance of secondary lesions, but that of PGF-MUM did not change significantly during the observed period (21 days). The excretion of PGE-MUM was not proportional to the increase in both hind paws volume. 2) Indomethacin, which diminished primary lesions but did not suppress secondary lesions, reduced the increase in urinary excretion of PGE-MUM. 3) Prednisolone and azathiopurine, which suppressed both primary and secondary lesions, increased the excretion of PGE-MUM over adjuvant control values on days 4 and 8. The facts described above suggest that the increase of endogenous PGE during days 4 to 8 may be important in the suppression of secondary lesions in adjuvant arthritis in rats.

Asymmetrical inhibitory effects of the first stimulus on reaction time to the second stimulus in double-stimulation situations.

Inhibitory effects of S1 on the RT to S2 in double (visual-visual) stimulation situations were examined using 10 right-handed subjects, especially from the viewpoint of hemispheric input/output coupling. It was shown that the RT of the left hemisphere (right hand) to S2 after the projection of S1 into the right hemisphere was slower than the RTs under other conditions. The results were interpreted as showing an asymmetrical interhemispheric interfering effect in situations of double stimulation.

Ratio of tree branch lengths: The equitable distribution of leaf clusters on branches.

The theoretical optimal ratios of branch lengths, which produce the most equitable distribution (minimum deviation) of leaf clusters in a computer-stimulated branch system, are similar to the observed ratios in real trees of Terminalia. In another study, observed values for branch angles in this species were shown to be similar to theoretical optimal values that produce the maximum effective leaf area. The relationship between these two fundamental parameters of bifurcation and tree geometry and their effect on effective leaf area and distribution of leaves are discussed.

Model insomnia, noise, and methylphenidate, used for the evaluation of hypnotic drugs.

Experimental sleep disturbance (model insomnia) was produced by intermittent white noise and the administration of 10 mg of methylphenidate (MPD). The effects of flurazepam (FZP) 15 mg and triazolam (TZM) 0.25 mg on these models was investigated. All night sleep polygraphy was performed on 8 normal male subjects under each of the following 9 conditions: baseline, TZM 0.25 mg, FZP 15 mg, white noise alone, noise and TZM, noise and FZP, MPD alone, MPD and TZM, and MPD and FZP. A reduction in total sleep time and stage were (S-REM) and an increase in the wakening stage were observed with both noise and MPD. Stage 4 sleep was reduced only by MPD. Administration of TZM or EZP did not cause any significant change in sleep parameters. These drugs in combination with noise or MPD resulted in almost complete recovery of the sleep disturbance induced by noise or MPD, except for a reduction in S-REM. These results indicate that model insomnia, particularly MPD insomnia, will assist in the evaluation of hypnotic drugs.

[Shift of visual laterality difference by loading of auditory discrimination tasks (author's transl)].

To investigate the functional relationship between the right and the left cerebral hemispheres in normal man, the effects of verbal and nonverbal auditory loads on the visual laterality difference in recognizing line orientation and Japanese letters were examined. The left visual field superiority in recognizing line orientation increased with nonverbal load, and disappeared with verbal load. On the other hand, the right visual field superiority in recognizing letters increased with verbal load, and disappeared with nonverbal load. The results were interpreted as indicating that when verbal or nonverbal auditory load was presented to both hemispheres through both ears, shift of functional dominance occurred between the two hemispheres which were connected by corpus callosum.

[A case of spontaneous pontine hematoma in patient suspected of pontine glioma and multiple sclerosis (author's transl)].

A case of spontaneous pontine hematoma in young boy, with remitting and relapsing clinical course of up to 11 years, suspected of having pontine glioma or multiple sclerosis is reported. Differential diagnosis of these are mentioned with reference to our cases of pontine glioma. This patient was a man aged 16. At 5 years of age he had his first episode of double vision. 20 days after first episode, gait disturbance, left facial palsy and consciousness disturbance developed. Neurological and neuroradiological examination revealed a pontine glioma and radiotherapy was administered. All signs and symptoms resolved except for bilateral abducens palsy. Four months later, he again complained of gait disturbance and facial palsy. Examination revealed bilateral conjugate ocular palsy, left facial palsy and cerebellar ataxia. These symptoms again resolved spontaneously, except for bilateral abducens palsy. At age 16 years, having been asymptomatic for 10 years, he suddenly noticed loss of taste. At that time sensory disturbance of the left side of himself, right hearing disturbance, dysarthria and retardation urinae. Neurological examination revealed bilateral optic atropy, bilateral abducens palsy, left facial palsy, right hyperacuisis, dysarthria, left hemiparesis, hypesthesia of the left side of the body and left cerebellar ataxia. The vertebral angiography was no evidences of mass lesion and vascular anomalies. The computed tomography demonstrated a pontine hematoma. Conservative therapy was performed and these symptoms cleared off except for bilateral abducens palsy.

Angiographic appearance of a huge retrocerebellar arachnoid cyst in an infant.

A detailed analysis of the angiographic findings with a congenital retrocerebellar arachnoid cyst in an infant is reported. The angiographic features are a huge retrocerebellar extra-axial avascular mass compressing and displacing the fourth ventricle anteriorly, dysgenesis of the cerebellum, a tight posterior fossa and transtentorial upward herniation of the monticulus and brainstem.
