Studies on the generation of hydrogen peroxide during some non-enzymic reactions changing the hyaluronic acid molecule.

The effect of catalase on non-enzymic-induced changes in the conformation of hyaluronic acid in a vitreous humour preparation was measured using viscometry. Ascorbate, heavy metal ions, riboflavin or EDTA all lowered the viscosity of hyaluronic acid solutions. These effects could be prevented by the addition of catalase. This suggested that H2 O2 is produced by these compounds and that the resulting change in conformation of hyaluronic acid may be due to peroxyl and hydroxyl attack by the free radicals thus generated.

[Quantitative determination of aqueous humor proteins by electroimmodiffusion in an antiserum containing agarosegel (author's transl)].

An exact quantitation of aqueous humor proteins within a few hours can be attained by an modification of the quantitative estimation of the proteins by electrophoresis in agarose gel established by Laurell. The aqueous humor proteins form long immunoprecipitations in agargel. The length of the precipitats is proportional to the concentration. By determination of albumin, coeruloplasmin and transferrin the application can be pointed out.

[Electron microscopic investigations of vitreous collagen after treating the vitreous with liquefying substances (author's transl)].

By electron microscopic studies collagenase, hyaluronidase, HCl, ascorbic acid, and iron ions have been found to attack the collagen fibers of bovine vitreous. Because of the possible role of ascorbic acid in collagen synthesis and the ability of ascorbic acid to degrade hyaluronic acid and collagen we suggest that the ascorbic acid of the vitreous essentially participates in construction and metabolism of the vitreous body.

[The choice of vaccine for post partum rubella vaccination (author's transl)].

Meruvax vaccine was compared with Cendevax in post partum rubella vaccination. The obstetricians in Vienna routinely use the Cendevax vaccine at present. In accordance with an earlier study on Almevax, the third vaccine available in Austria, the results with Meruvax were slightly better than with Cendevax. However, this is possibly due to a longer period of storage of the vaccine used in mass vaccination programmes. Hence, the three vaccines should be tested under the same practical conditions to decide which vaccine should be used routinely.

[The course of zonular fibers in the area of pars plicata corporis cilaris pars plana, ora serrata and retina. Eectron microsocpic study].

The course of zonular fibers in the area of pars plicata corporis ciliaris could be shown down to the pigmented epithelial layer and its basement membrane. S ingle fibrils enter in a connection with the plasma membrane in allinvestigated parts. Fibrils could be observed in the cytoplasm of the ora serrata. For the other areas (pars plicata corporis ciliaris, parsplana) this can be suggested too.

[The influence of riboflavin on vitreous homogenate (author's transl)].

Sunlight causes a decrease of viscosity of a mixture of riboflavin and ox vitreous homogenate while without riboflavin no reaction can be observed. The mechanism of this reaction is not yet clarified. It is possible that the reaction is closely related with the degradation of the viscosity of a hyaluronic acid solution by ascorbic acid cause of the production of H2O2 in both reactions. As an other mechanism the transfer of light energy on hyaluronic acid by riboflavin can be assumed.

[The course of zonular fiber. A further electronenmicroscopic study (author's transl)].

Zonular fibers could be shown between the basement membrane of the pigmented epithelium of pars plana and the elastic tissue of Bruch's membrane. A connection of zonular fibrils between the unpigmented epithelium and the basement membrane of pigmented epithelium of the pars plana could not be observed. It is possible to discuss two independent courses of zonular fibers.

[Course of atypical psychoses].

An attempt was made to classify the atypical psychoses according to cross-sectional psychopathological criteria. We were able to separate two groups from a group of benign schizophrenics. The latter served more as a comparison group and were in every way similar to the nuclear group, except for a better social prognosis. Group C (atypical manic depressive illnesses) which was closer to manic depressive illness than the other two groups, differs from it by thought disorders and delusional experiences. In the further course of the illness, after a few schizophrenic symptoms had appeared once or repeatedly during the acute stage, the typical features of manic depressive illness came more and more to the fore. In group A (mixed psychotic syndrome) manic depressive and schizophrenic symptom complexes appeared for quite some time during the acute stage with approximately equal clarity and significance. In the further course, during which manic depressive phases as well as schizophrenic thrusts can make their appearances, one can often see the development of a 'hypomanic defect'. Systematised delusions, as well as grimacing and circumstantiality, can also persist frequently. On the whole, however, it is difficult to recognize the defect states from their original state once the illness has settled down. A classification of the atypical psychoses and their differentiation from typical manic depressive illness or nuclear schizophrenia is necessary, at least, because of the worse, respectively better, social prognosis of the atypical psychoses. This investigation should be continued further by using as control groups bi- and unipolar affective psychoses and nuclear schizophrenics with a severe course. The subgroups of the atypical psychoses will be used to evaluate different long-term therapies in a further study.
