Hoffman, Heiner (New York University, New York, N.Y.), Jon Valdina, and Michael E. Frank. Effects of high incubation temperature upon the cell wall of Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 91:1635-1637. 1966.-Escherichia coli cells grown at 45 C were found to swell when suspended in distilled water, and were broken down when subjected to egg white lysozyme. Cells grown at 37 C were unaffected by these reagents. It appears, therefore, that cultivation at the upper limits of the temperature growth range leads to cell wall damage. It is suggested that this reaction may account for the favorable therapeutic effects of artificially elevated body temperature in certain infectious diseases.
Hoffman, Heiner (New York University, New York, N.Y.), and Michael E. Frank. Time-lapse photomicrography of lashing, flexing, and snapping movements in Escherichia coli and Corynebacterium microcultures. J. Bacteriol. 90:789-795. 1965.-A series of four consecutive photomicrographs of snapping by an Escherichia coli cell pair indicates that this maneuver consists initially of lashing movements of one cell unattached to the underlying surface and consequent flexion of the second cell, which is strongly attached to the underlying surface at its distal end. This is followed by a final unidirectional movement of the unattached cell which carries the attached cell with it. Lashing movements were also observed in microcultures of fusobacteria and a Corynebacterium, and photomicrographs were obtained of the latter. The observations cannot be interpreted to support the conventional hypothesis that snapping is a response to partial rupture of the capsule during cell division. A new hypothesis is suggested which is based upon motile intracellular granules that have been observed to break out of E. coli, corynebacteria, and fusobacteria cells, typically from the cell ends. Photomicrographs of the minute granules were obtained for both E. coli and the Corynebacterium.

Lumboperitoneal (LP) shunts performed for communicating hydrocephalus have been reported to lead to neurologic deficits in the lower limbs and spinal deformities as a result of arachnoiditis. A chart review of 375 children who underwent LP shunts between 1960 and 1981 at The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto was undertaken. Of the 375 charts reviewed, evidence of shunt-induced neurologic deficits was seen in 63 patients. Thirty-four patients had back pain with or without sciatica, 45 patients had hamstring tightness, and 40 patients had foot deformities. Forty-nine patients had lumbar hyperlordosis, lordoscoliosis, and scoliosis. These deformities are postulated to be the result of arachnoiditis involving the conus medullaris and lower lumbar roots.

Hospitals have an obligation to not only retain nurses in their respective institutions but in the profession as well. This article details the five components of a successful nurse retention program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
A woven, double velour Dacron vascular graft was made nonporous by coating it with a layer of collagen prepared from fresh, young calf skin. Grafts were implanted in the thoracic aorta of 24 mongrel dogs and were examined at intervals up to 180 days. The grafts did not require preclotting or special preparation before being implanted. They sutured easily and did not bleed. When explanted all grafts were patent and covered with neointima. The bovine collagen was almost completely resorbed by 90 days and was replaced with native tissue. The collagen was neither thrombogenic, antigenic, cytotoxic, or pyrogenic.
A new woven double velour vascular prosthesis designed to minimize intraoperative blood loss was implanted in 24 animals. Grafts were examined at 3 to 12 month intervals for healing and were compared to woven non-velour grafts implanted in 13 control animals. At 12 months, the velour grafts were 93 to 98% covered with neointima while the control grafts were only 86% covered with neointima. The neointima on the velour grafts was thinner (60 mu) and more vascular than that on the control grafts. Woven double velour grafts were implanted in 20 patients. Minimal bleeding occurred through the grafts which did not require preclotting, were easy to sew, and did not fray.
