Periodicity of sleep states is altered in infants at risk for the sudden infant death syndrome.

The normal succession of sleep and waking states through a night is disturbed in infants at risk for the sudden infant death syndrome. Compared with normal infants, siblings of the sudden infant death syndrome victims have longer intervals between active sleep epochs at particular times during the night in the newborn period and a decreased tendency to enter short waking periods at 2 and 3 months of age. The latter finding is interpreted as an increased tendency to remain asleep, or a relative failure to arouse from sleep in infants at risk.

A study of a family with inherited disease of cardiac and skeletal muscle. Part III. Genealogical considerations and associations with low intelligence.

A family with inherited cardiac and skeletal muscle disease was also found to have members with low intelligence. The effects of social and environmental conditions upon the behaviour of family members are described, with particular attention to the sociomedical problems created by the combination of a hereditary disease and low intelligence.

A study of a family with inherited disease of cardiac and skeletal muscle. Part II. Skeletal muscle morphology and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.

Skeletal muscle morphology and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation capacity were examined in a family whose members showed very combinations of mental subnormality, cardiomyopathy and muscle weakness. Light and electron microscopic findings suggested a neuropathic process, while tests of mitochondrial function indicated a state of tight coupling of oxidative phosphorylation, a feature in marked contrast to those in biochemical studies so far reported.

Adenosine Triphosphate↗

A study of a family with inherited disease of cardiac and skeletal muscle. Part I. Clinical, electrocardiographic, echocardiographic, haemodynamic, electrophysiological and electron microscopic studies.

A family consisting of parents and their 6 sons were investigated to elucidate the relationship between a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, musculoskeletal abnormalities and mental subnormality. The proband was diagnosed as having definite hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and the remaining family members were shown to have a spectrum of hypertropic non-obstructive cardiomyopathy. Mild muscle weakness was present in 3 sons. All the subjects except for 1 son showed definite signs of electromyographic abnormality, whereas sensory and motor conduction velocities were normal. All the EEGs except for that of the proband were normal. Testicular hypoplasia was present in 3 sons. The inheritance pattern appears to be polygenic autosomal recessive in type. Definite evidence of linkage between hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and HLA awaits further data.

Isolation of a salt tolerant pleomorphic Klebsiella strain from a case of diabetic periodontitis.

An unusual Klebsiella strain was isolated from a deep periodontal pocket of a diabetic patient. According to its biochemical reactions the new strain differed from Klebsiella pneumoniae and other described biotypes. In addition, the new isolate was very salt tolerant; in the presence of 7.5% sodium chloride the bacterium changed into a spirillum-like form, with highly pleomorphic filaments, and reverted immediately to the short rod form at lower sodium chloride concentrations or in the absence of sodium chloride. Optimum growth was observed in the presence of 2% sodium chloride. A wide range of carbohydrates was fermented with a large amount of gas production. It appears that the adaptation of the isolated Klebsiella strain to sodium chloride allows it to enter the ecological niche of periodontal lesions.

Cutaneous and venous complications of pentazocine abuse.

A 55-year-old man with a two-year history of intramuscular pentazocine abuse had classical cutaneous findings as well as secondary venous thrombosis, which, to our knowledge, is previously undescribed. Histologic evaluation, including direct immunofluorescent microscopy, did not establish the mechanism of tissue destruction.

Fulminant necrotising enterocolitis associated with Clostridia.

5 infants with no growth of bacteria on cultures of blood and peritoneal fluid recovered from necrotising enterocolitis after medical treatment alone. 12 infants with positive cultures required surgery. 5 of these 12, who did not harbour clostridia, had a mild clinical course and all 5 survived segmental bowel resection. The 7 infants who harboured clostridia had a more severe clinical course and 4 died. In 3 of 4 infants with Clostridium perfringens, the necrotising enterocolitis was fulminant, characterised by severe pneumatosis intestinalis, extensive gangrene, early intestinal perforation, and a fatal outcome.

Lifted-weight difference thresholds as a function of hand.

A study was conducted to determine if the two hands of right-handers are differentially sensitive to changes in perceived weight. Using the method of limits, the left and right hands of 20 college students were tested at each of three reference weights: 90, 100, and 110 gm. Results indicated that, over-all, difference thresholds for the two hands were not reliably different, though a trend did emerge toward greater right-handed sensitivity to weight changes at smaller weights and greater left-handed sensitivity at greater weights.

A conjugate of cellulase with fluorescein isothiocyanate: a specific stain for cellulose.

A fluorescent technique has been developed for in situ staining of cellulose. The staining agent in conjugate of cellulase and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC). Application of this agent does not disturb intercellular or intracellular substances. The technique depends on the specific binding of the fluorescent labeled enzyme to its substrate. The stain has been tested on cell-free noncellulose polysaccharides similar to cellulose and does not stain them. The technique has been used to localize cellulose during the life cycle of Dictyostelium discoideum with results that correspond to previous work using other methods.

Chronic staphylococcal stomatitis resistant to penicillin and tetracycline, with evidence of local immune response. Report of a case apparently precipitated by toothbrushing trauma.

Described is a case of chronic staphylococcal stomatitis, apparently precipitated by toothbrushing, which persisted for almost 6 months. The implicated organism, Staphylococcus aureus, was resistant to penicillin and tetracycline but sensitive to erythromycin. Recovery finally occurred after antibiotic therapy combined with surgical excision of some small persistent ulcers. Ther sera from a paired set of blood specimens failed to show a significant agglutinating titer, but the samples of saliva collected at the same times gave evidence of specific secretory Iga and showed relatively high agglutinating titer.

Different susceptibility of protein synthesis to inhibitors of elongation in cell-free systems from plasma cell tumours and reticulocytes.

Plasma cells and reticulocytes are mammalian cell systems which have specialized in the synthesis of a single protein during their differentiation from one common stem cell. To study whether there is a difference in cell susceptibility at the level of elongation, dose vs. inhibition curves of sparsomycin, cycloheximide and emetine in cell-free systems with S-30 fractions from plasma cell tumours (MOPC 63, MOPC 41, RPC 20, MOPC 104 E), reticulocytes and liver were compared. The experiments revealed: (1) all the selected systems are equally sensitive to sparsomycin; (2) the susceptibility of the reticulocyte systems to cycloheximide and emetine is higher than that of the plasma cell tumours. In the dose range of 1 - 10(-7) --5 - 10(-5) M cycloheximide and 1 - 10(-6)--1 - 10(-4) M emetine the reticulocyte system is preferentially inhibited; (3) the sensitivities of all plasma cell tumours are equal; (4) the liver system is more sensitive to emetine than to cycloheximide; (5) the site of the different susceptibility to these antibiotics could be located on the ribosomes; (6) however, when the extracts of the plasma cell tumours were prepared in the presence of hemin, their susceptibility rises and is like that of reticulocytes. These results show that hemin promotes in a cell-specific manner the sensitivity to some inhibitors of protein synthesis.

Pulmonary angiotensin-converting enzyme. Interspecies homology and inhibition by heterologous antibody in vivo.

Goat antibody against pure rabbit pulmonary angiotensin-converting enzyme was used to probe homology of converting enzymes from other species. Immunologically cross-reactive material was found in detergent-solubilized extracts of lung particles from rat, guinea pig, and dog by double immunodiffusion, radioimmunoassay, and inhibition of enzyme activity. No homology was demonstrable with bovine, frog, or chicken lung extracts. Antibodies from different individual goats yielded comparable estimates of homology by immunodiffusion and radioimmunoassay. In contrast, they varied greatly in extent and specificity of their inhibitory action on heterologous enzyme activity. The vasopressor effect of angiotensin I and the vasodepressor effect of bradykinin were diminished and potentiated, respectively, in rats treated with anti-rabbit enzyme antibody. A smaller but significant immune-dependent inhibition of the vasopressor response to angiotensin II was also observed.
