Effects of thyroxine treatment for 7--11 days on the positive inotropic effects mediated by alpha- and beta-adrenoceptors were studied in isolated guinea pig atria and rabbit papillary muscles. In guinea pig atria, the thyroxine treatment inhibited the positive inotropic effect of lower concentrations of phenylephrine (PHE), and attenuated the inhibitory effect of phentolamine on the PHE response. The effect of isoproterenol (ISO) was potentiated by the thyroxine treatment. In rabbit papillary muscles, the thyroxine treatment shifted the dose--response curve for PHE to the right and attenuated the inhibitory effect of phentolamine on the PHE response. Propranolol, in both guinea pig atria and rabbit papillary muscles, inhibited the PHE response more effectively in preparations from thyroxine-treated animals than in controls. In guinea peg atria, the attenuation of the PHE response mediated by alpha-adrenoceptors was observed after the thyroxine treatment for only 2 days, whereas the potentiation of the ISO response required the thyroxine treatment for a longer period. It was concluded that the thyroxine treatment attenuated the positive inotropic effect mediated by alpha-adrenoceptors and potentiated that mediated by beta-adrenoceptor-mediated positive inotropic effects due to the thyroxine treatment may be independent of each other.

An electrochemical detector that utilizes the reduction-oxidation phenomena of electrochemically active substances has been developed for high-performance liquid chromatography. The construction and application of the detector to brain catecholamines, particularly for norepinephrine and dopamine analysis, are described. The differences between this detector and those reported previously are discussed.

In vitro production of endotoxin-induced interferon in rabbit tissue cell cultures could be enhanced by pretreatment with interferon. The enhancible state developed from the first hr of incubation at 37 C and a maximal priming effect was attained at 6 hr of incubation. Yields of interferon from unprimed cultures were usually 20-200 units/ml. In contrast, the primed cultures constantly yielded 1,000-2,500 units/ml of interferon. The pretreatment with interferon seemed to cause an earlier appearance of detectable interferon and the primed cells became more sensitive to endotoxin. It turned out that 10--30 units/ml of rabbit interferon were enough to develop the maximal priming. Even when cells were pretreated with higher doses of rabbit interferon such as 1.0 x 10(4) - 1.0 x 10(5) units/ml, the same level of priming effect was always observed without diminution. Various types of homologous (rabbit) and heterologous (human and mouse) interferon preparations showed similar dose-dependent enhancement of interferon production in proportion to the antiviral titers of these preparations as tested with RK-13 cells of rabbit origin.
During myocardial ischemia produced in 43 dogs by occlusion of left coronary artery, electrical alternans developed in 34 experiments. The most common was alternans of ST-T complex. Surface and intracellular electrograms were recorded simultaneously from contiguous sites in the ischemic area. The alternans of ST-T complex in the surface electrogram corresponded to that of the rate of repolarization of the membrane action potential. The development of this alternans is localized in 2 relatively small area and transient. This may be the reason why electrical alternans of ST-T is clinically rare. A clinical case showing electrocardiographic changes of electrical alternans of ST-T complex without any change in the QRS complex is reported. Myocardial infarction and hypokalemia is considered as a cause of the alternans. The present results support the hypothesis that the mechanism of electrical alternans will be an alternation of the rate and extent of the ions transported across the myocardial cell membrane.
The changing pattern of clinical features of and prognosis for 206 patients with SLE were studied. SLE patients with Raynaud's phenomenon and minimal change and focal proliferative glomerulonephritis observed by means of renal biopsy tended to increase in C (1972--76) group compared with A (1955--68) and B (1969--71) groups. SLE patients with lupus nephritis and central nervous system lupus treated with large doses of steroids or combined therapy of steroids and immunosuppressive agents also increased in the order C, B, and A group. The prognosis for group C patients was better than that for A and B group patients. However, there appeared to be an increasing incidence of complications unrelated to SLE, namely infection and perforated peptic ulcer.
