[Acute retinopathy of prematurity following oxygen therapy: current concepts (author's transl)].

Five cases of retinopathy of prematurity have been observed among 1,750 premature infants at the Florence Geller Center in Cochin-Port-Royal--C.H.U. over a period of four years. In all cases, arterial PaO2 was more than 100 mmHg at least once. In the two worst cases, oxygen therapy given only during the first had been hours of life. The authors insist on the dangers of oxygen overdose immediately after birth or during transport to a Premature Infants Center. Laser photocoagulation was employed in four eyes: 2 with regression, 1 with cicatrisation, 1 with fibroplasia. Retinopathy of prematurity remains a danger in France, even if it is not as frequent as in the U.S.A. or Japan. Indirect ophthalmoscopy is essential for diagnosis and fluorography very useful to determine prognosis and treatment.

[Multifocal vitelliform dystrophy : a case report (author's transl)].

A case of multiple vitelliform dystrophy is described in an adult white woman ; vision, angiography, EOG are the same as in true Best's disease, but the reduction of vision seams more severe and occurs earlier. The extramacular discs are smaller, faster in evolution, they can appear, disappear or coalesce as in our case. The disease is genetically much less demonstrative than central vitelliform dystrophy. Angiographically, besides the usual pattern, they shaw marked staining without evidence of subretinal neovascularization perhaps due to a slight alteration of a still living RPE, and a hollow aspect of the discs at the level of RPE on stereo-angiograms. This is to be compared with the pathological findings made by Gass who described a marked thinning of the RPE.

[Essay about lacrymal proteins during sicca syndromes (author's transl)].

Most of sicca syndromes are expressed in a modification of specifically lacrimal proteins. These modifications are involving:--perturbations in tears-electrophoresis, residing in a more or less important decrease of one or several lacrimal proteins,--a frequent sinking in rate of total lacrimal proteins,--a slump of antimicrobial property in tears. The electrophoretic modifications could serve for base to biological classification of sicca syndromes.

[Intolerance causes of indentation material in retinal detachment surgery (author's transl)].

129 Lincoff sponge's rejection, representing 4,3% of our retinal detachment surgeries during 4 years have been studied. Men were twice more than women, the larger the amount of material was placed the more frequent rejections appeared. Most rejections (56,2%) occured during the first 4 months. Percentage of infection was roughly not influenced by the time after retinal detachment surgery.

Immunoglobulin E in human aqueous humor and corresponding serum. A physiopathological and clinical study.

The analysis of IgE in aqueous humor yielded an average concentration of 3.4 +/- 0.97 U/ml for 22 cataract patients and 5.5 +/- 3.42 U/ml for five uveitis patients. The IgE level in aqueous humor (IgEa.h.) of the cases examined is most probably, beside hematoocular diffusion of serum IgEs, the result of intra-ocular IgE production. In comparison with (mostly normal) IgEs levels, the IgEa.h. concentration appears relatively elevated, not only with uveitis patients, but also with cataract patients, above all when lenticular opacity is accompanied by other ophthalmic diseases (glaucoma, high myopia, diabetes). This "increase" of IgEa.h. concentration in very probably due to the radioimmunosorbent (RIST) technique employed, the most sensitive method available at the time of the present study. Thus, the calculated IgEa.h. value in the cataractous eyes should be regarded simply as approximate to the normal IgEa.h. concentration. These values are of clinical significance however, since a reference IgEa.h. mean-value is indispensable to the interpretation of pathologically high IgEa.h. levels and ethics do not permit of IgEa.h. determination in healthy eyes. The mean IgEa.h. levels of the delayed-type uveitis and cataract patients examined reveal no significant differences. IgEa.h. determination could make a contribution to the etiological clarification of, for example, immediate-type uveitis cases and intra-ocular parasitosis and serve as an appropriate model to study intra-ocular immunomechanisms.

[Results of a double-blind study comparing the effects of timolol and pilocarpine in 110 patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma].

Following a seventeen weeks study including 110 patients with open-angle glaucoma, 81,8% of the patients treated by timolol, administered twice a day, had a satisfactory control of their intraocular pressure, against only 41,8% of those patients treated by pilocarpine, administered four times a day. The side effects liable to timolol are clinically reduced, in a osit with pilocarpine which is followed by a series of well-known subjective and objective signs often causing discomfort to the patients.

[Arterial vascularization of the optic nerve trunk in humans (author's transl)].

We study the arterial vascularization of the trunk of the optic nerve partialarly in its anterior part in human. We injected in the carotids, a mass of colored an radio opaque substance, in the whole cadaver that allows simultaneously a visual study and a radiologic control of the results. This one is completely insufficient to allow a study of details; so we used the diaphanisation as described by Spalteholz; we were able to confirm Hayreh's results: the ophthalmic artery has a variable pathway according to individus but overcrosses the most frequently the optic nerve. The posterior ciliary arteries have also an origin pathway very variable; the posterior external ciliary is the most commonly present. The central retinal artery takes its origin the ophthalmic artery no more than half of the cases, and elsewhere from a common trunk with the ciliary arteries, or even from branches of those last arteries. It always penetrates the nerve in its inferior face and is responsable of its vascularization in periphery by the man of its pial branches and in depth by its intra neural branches.
