[Precipitable C4-poor immune complexes in HELLP syndrome and pre-eclampsia].

In 16 patients with HELLP syndrome and 10 patients with preeclampsia, laser nephelometric analysis of PEG-precipitated immunocomplexes revealed a decrease in the complement component C4. This is interpreted as a further indication of an immunologic component in the pathogenesis of these disorders.

[Comparison of three indices for the evaluation of disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus].

Assessing disease activity in SLE is often difficult due to the multiple organ systems involved. Three recent disease activity indices (SLAM, BILAG, and SLEDAI) are being increasingly used. Retrospective investigations comparing these indices have not been performed. We compared SLAM, BILAG, and SLEDAI in a retrospective study of 52 patients with SLE. SLAM and BILAG were found to correlate well with one another and with clinicians' evaluations of disease activity (as measured by intensity of immunosuppressive treatment). They correlated less well or insignificantly with laboratory parameters (ESR, anti-ds-DNA-antibodies). If practicability is also considered, SLAM, in particular, appears to be suitable for retrospective evaluation of disease activity in SLE.

[G-CSF in patients with lupus-associated neutropenia and infections].

Nine patients with SLE-associated neutropenia and infections received 48 Mio U G-CSF per day s.c. for 2-17 days as an adjunct to antibiotic treatment. Granulopoiesis was normal or hyperplastic in all cases. The mean granulocyte count increased within 2 days from 1.4 per nl to 11.4 per nl. Side-effects were exacerbating CNS symptoms in two patients and a case of leukocytoclastic vasculitis. G-CSF induced constantly a rapid and distinct increase of neutrophil granulocytes in lupus-associated neutropenia patients with normo- or hyperplastic granulopoiesis.
