[A standard code for naming microbes].

The author suggests a code for communication and processing of data which involves the formation of code names, in particular of microorganisms. These code is reached after agreement, made compulsory and then strictly respected. The principle for the formation of the code is relative comprehensibility, simplicity and orientation on a given area of application. The generation of the code is made by a computer.

The adherence of lactic acid bacteria to the columnar epithelial cells of pigs and calves.

The adhesion of various lactobacilli and streptococci to columnar epithelial cells of pigs and calves were studied, by in vitro methods. The porcine strains isolated most frequently were Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lact, acidophilus and Lact. fermentum. Thirteen of the 22 lactobacilli were adhesive. All the streptococci isolated belonged to Lancefield's D-group; none of them adhered to pig epithelial cells. The adhesive strains (9 of 22) of calves were identified as Lact. fermentum. Adherence was variable even between strains of the same species. Isolates from plant material, cultured milk and cheese did not adhere to the columnar epithelial cells in vitro. The adhesive porcine strains tolerated low pH and bile acids, which is important for their survival under conditions in the stomach and intestine.

Three-dimensional structure of the regularly constructed surface layer from Synechocystis sp. strain CLII.

The isolated, outermost cell wall layer from Synechocystis sp. strain CLII is described using electron microscopy and Fourier reconstruction to study the three-dimensional structure of the proteins within the layer to a resolution of ca. 3 nm. This surface layer forms regular hexagonal arrays (a = b = 15.2 nm). The two-dimensional space group is p6. The monomer proteins form hexamers arranged around a central hollow cylinder. The linkers between the hexamers are of the delta type and are located approximately in the central section between the top and bottom of the protein layer.

Epidemiological markers for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 5. Subdivision by interative numerical analysis of isolates according to lysotypes.

A computer-based numerical approach to the allocation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteriphage patterns has been presented. This rendered a usefule identification of similar phage types. The grouping had epidemiological relevance. Grouping of phage typing patterns of P. aeruginosa by numerical analysis showed that the patterns of related isolations may differ in one strong lysotype reaction, occasionally even in more reactions. Thus parallels previous findings which have been based on studies of the reproducibility of the method and evaluations of differences in epidemiologically related strains from the same sources.
