Induction of parturition with prostaglandin f2 alpha as a possible model to study impaired reproductive performance in the dairy cow.

Parturitions were induced in five cows, 2 weeks before term using prostaglandin (PG) F(2alpha). Two i.m. injections were performed with an interval of 24 h. All cows calved within 5 days (average 2.7 days) after the first injection of PGF(2alpha). Out of five cows, four had retained fetal membranes (RFM). Each animal was sampled for bacteriological examination using uterine biopsies twice a week during 42 days postpartum (PP). Jugular vein blood samples were withdrawn for PGF(2alpha)-metabolite and progesterone analyses five times per day during the first week PP and eight times per 24 h during the 2nd and 3rd weeks PP. From the 4th week, the sampling interval was reduced back to five times per day. From the 5th week PP, the sampling was reduced to two times per day and sampling was terminated after day 46 PP. Only morning samples were used for progesterone analyses. From day 10 PP, ultrasonography (US) was performed every 3rd day until day 39 PP for detection of ovarian activity and follicular dynamics. The highest incidence of bacteriological species was found during the first 3 weeks PP. After the 5th week of collection, all animals were free from bacteria. The species of bacteria found were Arcanobacterium (Actinomyces) pyogenes, Escherichia coli, alpha-hemolytic streptococcae and Pasteurella multocida. Immediately after parturition, very high levels of the PG-metabolite were seen in all animals, with a sharp decrease to line of significance around days 9-12 PP. Small increases above the line of significance were detected up to day 27 PP in cows with RFM, and after that time the levels were considered to be at baseline. Low levels of progesterone were seen in four animals during the whole experimental time. In one animal, an increase was seen on day 43 PP, which was maintained until the end of the experimental period on day 46 PP. Based on US, follicular waves were detected in all animals during the experimental period. In three animals, three non-ovulatory follicular waves were detected and in two animals, four non-ovulatory follicular waves were detected during 39 days of ultrasound sessions. Based on progesterone levels, only one animal was considered to have ovulated around day 40 PP. Results from the present study indicate that reproductive performance of cows after PG-induced parturitions differs from those of spontaneous cases of RFM. Differences regarding the resumption of ovarian activity were also observed between previous studies of dexamethasone-induced parturitions and the present study.

Elevated substance-P-like immunoreactivity levels in spinal dialysates during the formalin test in normal and diabetic rats.

Pharmacologic studies implicate the involvement of substance P in spinal nociceptive processing during the formalin test. However, no direct measurement of the temporal changes in substance P levels within the spinal cord of conscious animals has been reported. Further, dissociation between substance P levels and formalin-evoked nocifensive behavior may exist in diabetic rats, as exaggerated hyperalgesic behavior coexists with reduced peripheral nerve substance P levels. The present study was performed to directly measure the appearance of substance-P-like immunoreactivity (SP-LI) in spinal CSF of conscious, unrestrained rats using microdialysis techniques following injection of formalin into the hindpaw. The effect of diabetes upon formalin-evoked SP-LI levels in spinal CSF dialysates was also determined. In control rats, SP-LI increased in spinal dialysates following formalin injection and levels were maximal 20-30 min after injection, rising to 325% of basal values (p<0.02). Diabetic rats exhibited reduced (p<0.05) SP-LI in their spinal roots, while basal levels in spinal CSF were not different from controls. Formalin-evoked nocifensive behavior was increased in diabetic rats but SP-LI levels in spinal CSF dialysates after paw formalin injection were significantly (p<0.05) attenuated, reaching a maximum of only 161% of basal levels. This was accompanied by attenuated swelling at the formalin injection site and increased thermal response latencies. While increased SP-LI in spinal CSF coincides with phase 2 behavior in the formalin test and may contribute to spinal nociceptive processing during this period, exaggerated spinal substance P release is unlikely to underlie the increased nocifensive behavior seen in diabetic rats.

Clinical signs and hormonal changes in dairy heifers after induction of parturition with prostaglandin F2 alpha.

Parturition was induced in 12 dairy heifers with prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha about 2 weeks before the expected time of calving. Eight animals gave birth after two injections (group 1), three animals needed more than two injections (group 2) and one animal (cow no. 740) required one injection. All animals in groups 1 and 2 had retained foetal membranes and the time needed to induce parturition was 59 +/- 7 and 149 +/- 10 h, respectively. As cow no. 740 did not have retained foetal membranes and calved 24 h after one PGF2 alpha injection, it was excluded from the results. Udder distension and relaxation of the pelvic ligaments could predict the calving to within 12 h. Furthermore, the pre-calving drop of body temperature could predict the time of parturition to within 16 h. The total white blood cells and polymorphonuclear cells were at their highest values on the day preceding parturition whereas mononuclear cells had a tendency to increase 3 days after calving. Increased levels of haemoglobin were found at the time of parturition, whereas, plasma-calcium levels significantly decreased after parturition (P < 0.001). Progesterone levels markedly decreased after the first PGF2 alpha injection and reached 2 nmol/l at the time of parturition. Plasma levels of oestradiol-17 beta reached the peak at the time of parturition, whereas, the highest levels of the PGF2 alpha metabolite and cortisol were recorded 16 h after calving.

Expression and mutation patterns of p53 in benign and malignant salivary gland tumors.

The expression and mutation patterns of p53 were studied in a series of 68 benign pleomorphic adenomas and 237 malignant salivary gland tumors. p53 overexpression (nuclear staining exceeding 10%) was detected in 20% of the malignant salivary gland tumors, with the highest prevalence observed in polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma and the lowest in adenoid cystic carcinoma and acinic cell carcinoma. In contrast, none of the 68 benign pleomorphic adenomas had nuclear staining exceeding 10%. SSCP and nucleotide sequence analysis of exons 4 to 9 of p53 in 19 malignant tumors revealed 9 mutations in 7 tumors. Our findings indicate that p53 may be a useful marker to help discriminate between benign and malignant salivary gland tumors.

Measurement of cholecystokinin release in vivo in the rat spinal dorsal horn.

The microdialysis technique, used to monitor extracellular levels of transmitter substances in the central nervous system of laboratory animals as a reflection of transmitter release, is based on the ability of neurotransmitters to diffuse in the extracellular fluid from the site of release and to cross a semipermeable dialysis membrane. Even though the surgical procedure is not very complicated, the detection of released substances in the recovered dialysate may be difficult. Especially, the measurement of neuropeptide release is limited by the low extracellular concentration and of low recovery as compared to, for example, monoamines. Thus, for example, cholecystokinin (CCK), which is the most abundant neuropeptide in the central nervous system, is found at concentrations that are several orders of magnitude lower than those of classical transmitters. Therefore a highly sensitive detection method is of utmost importance. In the dorsal horn of the spinal cord CCK is found mainly in interneurons and in terminals of descending fibers. CCK seems to be involved in nociceptive transmission and CCK attenuates morphine-induced antinociception. We here describe in vivo microdialysis in the lumbar dorsal horn of the rat with subsequent quantification of the level of CCK-like immunoreactivity (-LI) by a highly sensitive radioimmunoassay.

Pharmacological characterization of morphine-induced in vivo release of cholecystokinin in rat dorsal horn: effects of ion channel blockers.

Previous studies indicate that an increased release of cholecystokinin (CCK) in response to morphine administration may counteract opioid-induced analgesia at the spinal level. In the present study we used in vivo microdialysis to demonstrate that systemic administration of antinociceptive doses of morphine (1-5 mg/kg, s.c.) induces a dose-dependent and naloxone-reversible release of CCK-like immunoreactivity (CCK-LI) in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. A similar response could also be observed following perfusion of the dialysis probe for 60 min with 100 microM but not with 1 microM morphine. The CCK-LI release induced by morphine (5 mg/kg, s.c.) was found to be calcium-dependent and tetrodotoxin-sensitive (1 microM in the perfusion medium). Topical application of either the L-type calcium channel blocker verapamil (50 microg) or the N-type calcium channel blocker omega-conotoxin GVIA (0.4 microg) onto the dorsal spinal cord completely prevented the CCK-LI release induced by morphine (5 mg/kg, s.c.). Our data indicate that activation of L- and N-type calcium channels is of importance for morphine-induced CCK release, even though the precise site of action of morphine in the dorsal horn remains unclear. The present findings also suggest a mechanism for the potentiation of opioid analgesia by L- and N-type calcium channel blocking agents.

Uterine bacteriology, histology, resumption of ovarian activity and granulocyte function of the postpartum cow in different milking frequencies.

The postpartum uterine bacteriology, histology, resumption of ovarian activity and polymorphonuclear granulocyte (PMN) number and function in 18 Swedish dairy cows were studied. Cows were milked either 2x (n = 9) or 3x per day (n = 9). Endometrial biopsy samples for bacteriological and histological investigations were collected during 8 weeks postpartum, starting within one week after calving. Milk samples for progesterone determination were collected twice a week until the cows had shown normal reproductive cyclicity. Blood samples for granulocyte function (phagocytic capacity and total number) were collected from each animal on the same days as when the biopsies were obtained. All animals in both groups were free from bacteria at the latest after 6 weeks post-partum and there was no difference regarding bacterial elimination and bacterial species between milking groups. No difference regarding uterine histology between milking groups was seen. In both groups, 8 cows had normal to slight infiltration of leukocytes in the endometrium at the end of sample collection. No changes in granulocyte function could be seen in the 2 milking groups. Resumption of ovarian activity was detected on day 45.6 +/- 9.3 (mean +/- SD) postpartum in the 2x milking group and 36.6 +/- 9.0 (mean +/- SD) post-partum in the 3x milking group (p = 0.05). Based on our findings, an increased milking frequency from 2 to 3 times a day did not influence the uterine function postpartum.

Peripheral axotomy influences the in vivo release of cholecystokinin in the spinal cord dorsal horn-possible involvement of cholecystokinin-B receptors.

An increased expression of cholecystokinin (CCK) messenger RNA (mRNA) as well as CCK-B receptor mRNA in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells following peripheral axotomy has previously been demonstrated. In the present in vivo microdialysis study, the effect of unilateral sciatic nerve section on basal and potassium-induced release of CCK-like (CCK-LI) immunoreactivity in the rat dorsal horn was investigated. We also compared the effects of the CCK-B receptor antagonist CI988 on basal and potassium-stimulated CCK-LI release in intact animals and in chronically axotomized rats. Perfusion of the microdialysis probe with KCl (100 mM) induced a more than 6-fold increase of the extracellular level of CCK-LI in control animals. In contrast, following unilateral sciatic nerve section the same KCl stimulation failed to evoke a release of CCK-LI ipsilaterally. However, after systemic administration of CI988 (1 mg kg-1, i.v.), 100 mM KCl induced a significant increase of the extracellular CCK-LI level in axotomized rats, similar to that observed in control animals. In control animals no effect of CI988 on KCl-stimulated CCK-LI release could be detected. CI988 by itself had no influence on the extracellular CCK-LI level in either nerve injured or control animals. The present data suggest that axotomy reduces the release of CCK-like immunoreactivity in the spinal cord by a mechanism involving the CCK-B receptor binding site.

The effect on luteolysis by intensive oral administration of flunixin granules in heifers.

The objective of the study was to investigate whether oral administration of flunixin meglumine (FM) in the form of granules could prolong the functional life of the corpus luteum in heifers. Previous studies have shown that intensive, i.e. four times daily parental administration of FM can postpone luteolysis. Twelve heifers received an oral dose of 2.2 mg flunixin per kg body weight. Three dosing regimes were used; twice (n = 2), thrice (n = 4) and four times daily (n = 6). The 9-day-treatment period started on Day 14/15 of the oestrous cycle. Blood samples were collected twice daily during the entire experimental period. Frequent samples were withdrawn from Day 14/15 for 10 and 15 days in the control and treatment oestrous cycles, respectively, at 0600, 0800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800 and at 2000 h. The plasma was analysed for the content of the main metabolite of PGF2 alpha, i.e. 15-ketodihydro-PGF2 alpha, and progesterone. A control cycle preceded the treatment cycle so that each heifer acted as its own control. The length of the oestrous cycle was significantly increased when FM was administered thrice, from 18-22 days to 20-24 days (P < 0.05), and four times daily, from 18-21 days to 25-27 days (P < 0.01), but not in the twice daily dosing regime (one-way ANOVA). When FM was administered twice and thrice, luteolysis occurred during treatment. However, when the four times daily regime was used, luteolysis was obtained when the treatment had terminated. No changes in progesterone levels were recorded, although the luteal phase increased when the oestrous cycle length was prolonged. The number of PG-pulses decreased significantly, from 6-12 pulses to 0-3 pulses (P < 0.01), when FM was administered four times daily. A reduction was also observed when heifers received the drug thrice, but the decrease was not significant. The oral route of administration was found to be as effective as the parental one to affect the mechanism responsible for luteolysis in heifers. However, to inhibit and postpone luteolysis, administration of FM four times daily is a necessity. Our results show that oral administration of FM in the bovine species can be of value both in research as well as in the clinic, e.g. to support the luteal function.

Effects of fractionated irradiation on the cytoskeleton and basal lamina in parotid glands--an immunohistochemical study.

Cytoskeletal, cytocontractile and basement membrane proteins were studied using the immunofluorescence technique in the parotid gland in female rats after half-side fractionated megavoltage irradiation. The non-irradiated parallel-handled parotid glands served as controls. The qualitative expression of cytoskeletal proteins remained unchanged 10 days following irradiation compared to controls, i.e. cytokeratin was observed but not vimentin, desmin or GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic proteins). Six months after irradiation the cytokeratin expression adjacent to duct lumina was clearly stronger. Actin staining was more pronounced in the periphery of the acini. Ten days after irradiation no alterations of the basal lamina proteins, laminin and fibronectin, were detected. Six months post-irradiation laminin deposits were detected in areas where the entire acini had degenerated and had been replaced by fibrosis. An increased expression of fibronectin was also observed in the stroma at that time, reflecting an increased fibrosis. In areas where the acini remained, laminin immunofluorescence was mainly found in basal laminae of normal thickness, but the mean diameter of the acini seemed to have increased. This indicates a regeneration of acini and a restructuring of the basal lamina of the parenchyma.

Fertility in dairy cows managed for calving intervals of 12, 15 or 18 months.

Effects on reproduction in a total of 135 dairy cows managed for calving intervals of 12, 15 or 18 months (72, 38 and 25 cows respectively) were studied. The cows were of the Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) and the Swedish Freisian Breed (SLB) and were housed in 2 different herds with 3 different management systems (tied, loose, and tied but milked in a milking parlour; mixed). The cows in one of the herds (48 cows) were assigned for milking either 2 times or 3 times a day. When comparing conception rate at 1st insemination (AI) and the percentage of cows finally pregnant, we found no significant differences between the 3 calving interval groups, however, a tendency for a higher conception rate with a 15 months' interval compared with a 12 months' interval was found in one of the herds (50% vs 41.5%). The percentage of finally pregnant animals varied between 81% and 100%, but this variation was mainly attributed to the herd rather than calving interval group. A significantly higher percentage of cows was treated for anoestrous in the 12-month group than in the 15-month group in one of the herds (28.6% vs. 5.3%). The frequency of ovulations with external heat signs increased with ovulation number up to the 4th ovulation and thereafter remained stable. No significant difference was found in number of AIs required per conception with respect to calving intervals, breeds, or milking frequency groups. However, cows milked 3 times a day had a significantly longer interval from the 1st AI to conception compared with cows milked 2 times a day (45.8 days vs 17.6 days, p < .01). Cows kept loose exhibited 1st ovulatory oestrous, approximately 2 weeks earlier (55.9 days vs 69.7 days, p < .05) than their herd mates kept tied. In conclusion, our study shows that lengthening the calving interval to 15 or 18 months may have a positive influence on reproduction in terms of less need for treatments of ovarian disorders and higher conception rates. Our results also indicate that milking 3 times a day may have negative effects, and keeping cows in a loose-housing management system may have positive effects on ovarian function.

Bacteriological and histological investigation of the postpartum bovine uterus in two Estonian dairy herds.

Postpartum uterine infections, endometrial histology and resumption of ovarian activity in cows were studied in 2 Estonian dairy herds with different herd sizes, milk yields and management systems. Ten cows at Farm A and 5 cows at Farm B were studied in the experiment. All cows in the study had normal calving performance. Endometrial biopsies for bacteriological and histological examinations were collected once a week starting on the second week postpartum and continuing for 7 weeks postpartum. Milk progesterone samples were collected twice a week during the whole study period. In both herds, the uterine flora contained mainly facultative anaerobic bacteria (Streptococcus spp., E. coli, Staphylococcus spp., Proteus vulgaris). Among obligate anaerobic bacteria only Bacteroides spp. were found. After 7 weeks of collection at farm A, a bacterial uterine flora still persisted in 2 of the cows. At farm B, on the other hand, bacterial elimination was complete after 6 weeks. Presence of inflammatory cells in uterine histology specimens remained higher at the end of collection and resumption of ovarian activity was delayed at farm A. After 7 weeks postpartum, only 6 of the 10 cows at farm A had resumed ovarian cyclicity, while at farm B the first oestrous cycle had occurred in all cows. The study showed that differences regarding uterine infections and their clearance occurred between farms and, despite these differences, cows with normal calving performance will effectively recover without any treatment.

Opioid-induced release of neurotensin in the periaqueductal gray matter of freely moving rats.

The midbrain periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) is an important region for endogenous pain suppression. Nerve terminals containing opioid peptides and neurotensin (NT), as well as high densities of opioid- and NT-receptors, have been demonstrated in the ventromedial PAG. Local administration of opioids or NT in this region induces antinociception in experimental animals. In the present microdialysis study, the effect of opioids on the release of NT in the ventromedial PAG was investigated. Perfusion of the microdialysis probe with 10 microM morphine induced a significant increase (P < 0.05; n = 5) of the extracellular level of NT-like immunoreactivity (NT-LI), while perfusion with a 10-fold higher concentration of morphine had no significant effect on the NT-LI release in the PAG. Also perfusion of the dialysis probe with the mu-opioid receptor-specific agonist [D-Ala2-N-Me-Phe4-Gly5-ol]-enkephaline (DAGO) (1 or 100 microM) induced a significant (P < 0.05; n = 7-9) increase of the NT-LI level. The increase in NT-LI release in response to 1 microM DAGO was both calcium-dependent and naloxone-reversible. Since opioid agonists generally inhibit neuronal activity, an indirect mechanism, involving inhibition of tonically active inhibitory neurons, e.g. gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons, could be of importance for the opioid induced release of NT. However, local administration in the PAG of the GABA(A) antagonist bicuculline (0.1-10 microM) or the GABA(A) agonist muscimol (1-100 microM) had no significant effect on the extracellular NT-LI level in the PAG, suggesting that GABAergic mechanisms are not involved in the opioid-induced release of NT-LI. In conclusion, the present data provide in vivo evidence that mu-opioid receptors mediate stimulation of neurotensin release in the PAG.

Predictive value of potential doubling time in head and neck cancer patients treated by conventional radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to investigate the clinical utility of pretreatment measurements of tumor cell kinetics to predict the outcome of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck receiving conventional radiotherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: All patients received between 64 and 70 Gy as 2 Gy fractions, five fractions per week. Cell kinetics were assayed rapidly and quantitatively using flow cytometric evaluation of iododeoxyuridine (IdUrd) incorporation, in vivo, from a biopsy removed several hours after the administration of the DNA precursor to the patient prior to the start of treatment. RESULTS: The measured proliferation parameters were not related to the clinicopathological features of the tumors, emphasizing the independent nature of these parameters. In univariate analysis, nodal involvement was the most important clinical feature of the tumors related to local control followed by Tpot, DNA aneuploidy, and attainment of complete regression at 6 weeks. Of these only Tpot and nodal status maintained significance in multivariate analysis, with respect to loco-regional control. In subgroup analysis, Tpot was able to stratify patients into high or low rate of loco-regional control in node negative patients, in aneuploid tumors and in patients who did achieve complete regression at 6 weeks. For cause specific survival, N-stage was the only parameter that significantly discriminated the prognosis in these patients. CONCLUSIONS: The conclusion of this study is that Tpot provides clinically important information that can predict patients with a low probability of achieving long-term local control with conventional fractionation. Further improvements to the methodology to address the shortcomings of analyzing diploid tumors may increase the predictive power of the measurement.

Vitrification of bovine IVF blastocysts in an ethylene glycol/sucrose solution and heat-stable plant-extracted proteins.

The use of heat-stable plant proteins in an ethylene glycol-based solution for the vitrification of in vitro-derived embryos was examined. Day 7, 8 and 9 bovine in vitro matured, fertilized and cultured (IVMFC), full and expanded blastocysts were vitrified in solutions composed of 40% ethylene glycol (EG) plus 0.3 M sucrose supplemented with 20% Ficoll and 0.3% BSA (VF-1), 25 mg/ml heat-stable plant proteins (HSPP; VF-2), or with no supplement (VF-3). In Experiment 1, embryos were expelled from the straw after thawing, and EG was diluted from embryos with 0.5 M sucrose. There were no differences in post-thaw embryo survival rates or in hatching/hatched rates after 24 h of culture between the VF-1, VF-2 and VF-3 solutions (40.1, 54.1 and 50.8% and 10.7, 16.4 and 17.5%, respectively). Transfer of 12 frozen/thawed embryos to 6 recipients (2 recipients per treatment) resulted in 2 pregnancies from the VF-2 group and 1 pregnancy from the VF-3 group. In Experiment 2, EG was diluted from embryos after thawing within the straw with 0.5 M sucrose. There were no differences in post-thaw survival or hatching/hatched rates after 24 h of culture (19.0, 13.6 and 23.8% and 9.5, 9.0 and 14.4% for VF-1, VF-2 and VF-3, respectively). Transfer of 6 frozen/thawed embryos to 3 recipients (1 recipient per treatment) resulted in no pregnancies. The post-thaw histology of Day 7, 8 and 9 IVMFC blastocysts showed typical ultrastructure with well preserved cell-to-cell contacts. There were no major differences in the fine structure of blastocysts regardless of treatment. The use of HSPP at a concentration of 25 mg/ml in the vitrification medium did not affect the post-thaw embryo survival over that of no protein supplementation. The presence of macro molecules in a 40% EG/sucrose vitrification solution also did not improve post-thaw viability of IVMFC-derived blastocysts.

Ultrastructural morphometry of parotid acinar cells following fractionated irradiation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the long term effects on the ultrastructure of parotid glands after fractionated irradiation. The method implemented involved 5 x 6 Gy and 5 x 8 Gy, Monday to Friday 6 MV photons. By unilateral irradiation, the contralateral parotid gland served as a control. Although irradiation diminished the acinar cell density in light microscopic sections from 75 to 32% after 5 x 8 Gy of irradiation, ultrastructural morphometry could not detect any statistically significant differences in acinar cell size, nuclear size, nuclear density, granule area, mean granule size, or granule density. In general, greater differences were seen between rats receiving 30 or 40 Gy, on both the irradiated and the control size, than between the irradiated side and the control side. This was interpreted as due to differences in the nutritional state of the animals. This analysis concluded that individual acinar cells that survive irradiation seem not to be damaged in the long term when evaluated at the ultrastructural level. The study further stresses the importance of adequate sampling sizes and the use of adequate controls.

Malignant salivary gland tumours in Sweden 1960-1989--an epidemiological study.

Epidemiological data from the Swedish Cancer Registry of new cases of malignant major and accessory salivary gland tumors in Sweden between 1960 and 1989 are presented, including the total number and the age-standardised incidence rate per 1 million population, by site and sex, I(s). An analysis of the various histopathological types of malignant salivary gland tumours in the different sublocations is also given. A comparison is made between the three 10-year periods 1960-1969, 1970-1979 and 1980-1989 regarding total number and I(s). The total number of new malignant major salivary gland tumors was 2557, representing approximately 85 new cases per year and 0.3% of all new diagnosed cancers in Sweden. In addition, approximately 25 new cases per year of malignant accessory salivary gland tumors were reported. If all malignant salivary gland tumours were considered, the most common location was found in the parotid glands with a relative frequency of 57.5%, and the next most common site was malignant accessory salivary gland tumours with 22.6%. I(s) was 10.2 for the major and 3.0 for the accessory salivary glands. No major difference between the examined 10-year periods was found concerning the relative frequency, and no statistically significant difference in I(s) was found between the examined 10-year periods, except for a statistically significant decrease in the I(s) between the time periods 1960-1969 and 1980-1989 for the multiple or unspecified malignant salivary glands from 0.5 to 1.4. A difference in the distribution of various histopathological types of malignant salivary gland tumours was observed between the different time periods. This was particularly valid for the diagnoses adenoid cystic carcinomas and mucoepidermoid carcinomas which increased in number and the diagnosis malignant salivary gland tumours of mixed type, which decreased in number during the examined time periods.
