[Astigmatism after extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular posterior lens implantation].

PURPOSE: To evaluate early and late astigmatism appearing after extracapsular cataract extraction with PC IOL implantation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Astigmatism was examined in one hundred consecutive patients before operation and one week, 6 months and 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: During the first week after surgery most patients (82%) had with the rule astigmatism, which decreased gradually from 3.95 D cyl (mean value) to 0.08 D cyl after a year. Against the rule astigmatism was present in 14% of cases and increased from 2.40 D cyl (mean value) to 3.07 D cyl in the same period of time. On the last examination 35% of patients didn't use any astigmatic correction. CONCLUSIONS: Traditional ECCE with PC IOLs causes postoperative astigmatism in most patients. Majority of them has with the rule astigmatism, which decreases gradually during the first postoperative year and may change into against the rule astigmatism.

[Abuse of local anesthetics in ophthalmology].

Surface anaesthesia is applied in ophthalmology for minor surgery, diagnostics tests and also in cases of corneal or conjunctival inflammation and injuries. The abuse of such anaesthetics may cause serious complications. The authors emphasize the necessity for their careful application.

[Intraocular lens implantation with circular capsulotomy and "envelope" techniques--comparison of results].

The studies comprised 200 patients with presenile and senile cataract who underwent cataract surgery with IOLs implantation. In 100 consecutive cases circular capsulotomy and in subsequent 100 "envelope" technique were used. The results indicate the advantages of "envelope" method: less intra- and post-operative complications, quicker visual convalescence; it is easier and safer.

[Visual field in pseudophakia].

Estimation of the visual field in pseudophakic eyes was the aim of this study. Results were compared between the groups of anterior chamber lenses, posterior ciliary sulcus fixation lenses, posterior intracapsular lenses and the control group of phakic patients. Each group consisted of 25 subjects. Visual field measurements were done using dynamic method with Goldmann perimeter and visual field areas were determined by adequate computer program. Statistical analysis of data showed the reduction of visual field in pseudophakic groups when compared to the control group and no significant differences between different types of implants.

[Evaluation of binocular vision in patients with intraocular lenses].

Basing on clinical material of the authors, binocular vision of patients after cataract surgery with implanted intraocular lenses has been studied. Total number of 91 patients, age 34-81, was divided into 3 groups: with unilateral and bilateral pseudophakia and control group. Poorly and strongly dissociating tests were applied. Results were evaluated in 3 categories: full, deficient or lack of binocular vision.
